Car show questions - David Dean at 229-460-2463

Update: Top Fuel Dragster and Blown Altered classes have been added to the program of the Southern Nostalgia Shootout, scheduled for October 27-29, 2006, in beautiful Cecil, Georgia. These highly popular classes are some of the fastest in nostalgia racing. Nitromethane or alcohol fuel is permitted in either class. Payout for each class is a nostalgic $1000 for the winner, $500 for the runner-up, and $250 for each semifinalist.

A few professional vending area, swap meet, and car corral spaces are still available. Sponsorships for a few of the ten racing classes are also still available. Additional information for the event can be found at SGMPracing.com or contact Mark Adams (229) 253-1025.

Garlits to bring Swamp Rat VIII to Southern Nostalgia Shootout

Big Daddy Don Garlits, number one drag racer of all time, will bring Swamp Rat VIII to the Southern Nostalgia Shootout at South Georgia Motorsports Park, October 27-29. Don will be making smoky blasts (restricted by safety rules to less than one-eighth mile) and participating in the Cacklefest event on Saturday night. Come and see Big Daddy on track and meet him in
the pit area. Come and see how drag racing was in the past.

Swamp Rat VIII was originally constructed in 1964, and is the first in the Swamp Rat series to utilize the new Chrysler 426 Hemi. It was originally driven by Connie Swingle and for a short time in 1965 it was driven by Carl Schiefer when Big Daddy was suffering from back injuries. Originally raced as Swamp Rat VIII, it was also called the Wynns Jammer in 1965 when Big
Daddy drove it. The original car was modified into Swamp Rat 10 by extending its wheelbase to 175 inches. The car Garlits will bring to South Georgia Motorsports park is a recreation of the original Swamp Rat VIII built for modern events.

The Southern Nostalgia Shootout will include racing in ten nostalgia classes, a car show, swap meet, and car corral. For more information, go to SGMPracing.com.

Kurt Johnson Scores a Big Win in Memphis

Contact: Jon Knapp
TMG Sports Marketing, Inc.

Memphis, TN, August 21, 2006 - The third time was the charm for ACDelco Cobalt driver Kurt Johnson, as he took home the Pro Stock title in today's rain-delayed O’Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals in Memphis, Tennessee. It was the 35th win of Johnson's career, third of the 2006 season, and first at Memphis Motorsports Park after two prior runner-up finishes.

"We finally won one in Memphis," declared a happy Johnson afterwards. "You never want to think you're jinxed at a particular track, but after two runner-up finishes, we were starting to wonder if that win light would ever come on here four times on Sunday. Fortunately, our ACDelco Cobalt ran extremely well, I did a good job of driving when I needed to, and it all worked out in our favor. Who knows, maybe the key was that we finished this race on Monday."

After qualifying fourth, Johnson opened in impressive fashion on Sunday, using the best reaction time of the round at .017 and the second quickest pass at 6.781 seconds to eliminate Richie Stevens. Although heavy rains postponed the remainder of the race until the following morning, the second-generation racer showed no ill effects from the delay, combining reaction times in the .03 range with two quick runs to trailer Larry Morgan and Allen Johnson and advance to the 65th final round of his illustrious career.

Squaring off against current points leader Jason Line in the championship round, Johnson knew that to leave with the winner's trophy, he knew that both he and his distinctive red, white and blue ride would need to produce an error-free performance. From the moment the starting lights turned green, he left nothing to chance, using his best reaction time of the weekend at .013 to gain the advantage by three hundredths of a second and never looked back, using a 6.718-second, 204.42 mph pass to score the holeshot win over Line, who posted a quicker 6.703-second clocking in the losing effort.

Making Johnson's accomplishment even more impressive was the fact that this was only his second start with this particular chassis. Having made its competitive debut in Brainerd a week ago, the final round at Memphis Motorsports Park marked only its 13th full pass down the quarter-mile.

"We made some changes going into the semi-finals and our ACDelco Cobalt really improved, which was a key to our win," stated Johnson. "It picked us up by a hundredth, which is huge in these cars, about the same as 10 horsepower on the dyno. Although it was also important that we maintain lane choice, because that right lane can be so brutal, we made two pretty decent runs over there in qualifying, so I wasn't as worried about getting put in that lane as I was in the past. Still, it was nice to keep it for all four rounds. This new car is looking like it's something pretty decent, one that we might keep around for a while.

"Of course, I ran Jason (Line) in the final, and after going red against him in Brainerd, I certainly didn't want to do it again, but I couldn't back off. We tuned the car for what we had, I tried to react as well as I could, I went .013 on the tree, and things turned out well. I put it in second gear a little early, but overall it was a decent run with only a few thousandths or a hundredth left in it.

"The important part is that it was good enough to win, and that's all that matters. It's also good for everyone on both Dad's (six-time champion Warren Johnson) and my teams, a nice morale booster heading into the last part of the season. Now we have to take those positive vibes we generated here and take them to Indy, which just happens to be another race we run on Monday."

BAZEMORE OUT AND ON FIRE IN MEMPHIS SECOND ROUND

DON SCHUMACHER RACING
Contact: Judy Stropus

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2006) - Monday's completion of the O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals went off on time at just before 9 a.m. Central Time at Memphis Motorsports Park following yesterday's rain-out after the near completion of one round of eliminations. And Whit Bazemore was on a charge to the finish line in the quarterfinal against John Force.

After defeating Tommy Johnson Jr. in the opening round when he intentionally slowed to a 11.545/68.78 pass because Johnson fouled out, the driver of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car scorched the starting lights with a .020 (of a second) reaction time (.000 is perfect) to Force's .069. But, by the 60-ft. mark Force was ahead, taking the win with a
4.824-second elapsed time at 316.23 mph, while Bazemore's car caught on fire at the finish line, posting a 5.107/238.98.

The Matco Tools Dodge suffered severe fire damage and Bazemore lost 10 points and was fined $1000 for an oildown. He was OK after jumping from the moving car.

"We were going along just fine and it looks like it broke some valve train parts," Bazemore explained. "You don't see them, so you keep going. Then it just basically broke the block in half. The boost went up. It was a pretty good fire in the car, and it was similar to the old days (when he was a struggling, independent competitor). Everything was good until the brake line burned off.

"I rely on the brakes a lot. Sometimes we don't even use the parachutes. Everything was good and then the brakes just went totally - 100 percent, zero brakes. And that's when it's hot, there's no brakes and it could take another 30-40 seconds to stop with no brakes. Going 100 miles an hour to zero with no brakes could take a long time with the tires still on it, and the tires were still on it.

"I stood up and when I stood up through all the smoke I could see that we were going to probably glance the wall. I didn't want to be a part of that, not being buckled in, so I jumped off."
Bazemore was unhurt, but sore. "I'm fine. I'm OK," he said.

As for the damage to the car, "I don't know," said Bazemore. "We have more cars; we're not that worried about the car."

He is eighth in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car rankings, with 861 points, counting the oildown penalty. "If it comes down to being fifth or third (place) at the end of the year by 10 points, then it will be a big deal. With six races to go, the championship is a huge, huge longshot. We're not really that worried about that."

Next up is the prestigious U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Cleremont, Ind., Aug. 30-Sept. 4.

RSC Collectibles Newest Diecast - Rat Pack 1 Pro Stock 1968 Camaro

RSC Collectibles Newest Diecast - Rat Pack 1 Pro Stock Camaro

Review: Rat Pack 1 1968 Pro Stock Camaro by RSC Collectibles

RSC has followed up their Bill Jenkins '68 Camaro with their newest diecast, the 1/24 scale Wally Booth Rat Pack 1 1968 Pro Stock Camaro. Wally Booth had the second quickest Chevrolet Pro Stocker in the first year of NHRA Pro Stock racing and was runner-up at the 1970 NHRA Springnationals. This effort was the best of any Chevrolets in 1970 NHRA Pro Stock national event competition, except for Bill Jenkins’ two wins early in the year.

The Rat Pack 1 Camaro continues the RSC tradition of producing quality diecast replicas. As are all of RSC products, this model came securely packaged and protected. I’ve been extremely pleased with all of RSC’s products and this one is no exception. In fact, this one may be the nicest Pro Stock diecast they have produced to date!

Some of the features of the RSC Rat Pack 1 Camaro are: beautiful metal flake paint, realistic product decals, simulated chrome trim, slotted wheels, front and rear spoilers, “Traction Action” traction bars, steerable front wheels, removable hood with scoop, “real” hood pins, magnets to secure the hood and detailed interior with shifter, tachometer and seat belts. The realistic features continue under the hood with the big block Chevy engine, plug wires, tunnel ram intake manifold, two four barrel carbs, carb linkage, cool can, fuel lines and radiator hoses.

As with RSC’s other diecast models, the proportions are correct, the tires are realistic and the paint/lettering is superb. The detail, accuracy, and craftsmanship of the RSC Rat Pack 1 1968 Pro Stock Camaro will make this a fine addition to your diecast collection.

The RSC Rat Pack 1 1968 Pro Stock Camaro will make a great gift for yourself or any drag racing fan! Purchase yours soon as only 3,000 were produced and they won’t be available for very long!

Snap On Tools Day at the Races at Atlanta Dragway in 2006

FATHER AND SON TEAM WIN TWO ELIMINATORS DURING SNAP ON TOOLS DAY AT THE RACES

by Tim Glover

(Commerce, GA - August 20) Father and son Mark and Jeremy Hancock were jubilant at the end of the Snap On Tools Day at the Races, held at Atlanta Dragway. They had good reason to celebrate, as they both won the eliminator class they entered. For fun, they decided to switch cars for a day. Father Mark won Super Pro in son Jeremy's 2005 M&M Dragster, and Jeremy won Sportsman class with his dad's 2001 Jeep Cherokee.

Mother Nature did let her presence be known with a dramatic lightning show, and a bit of rain. A number of racers left when the rain began, but Atlanta Dragway personnel did their best to dry the track quickly and got the show going again after the rain delay.

Snap On Tools customers Art Petry and Frank Lecuona, who work for Bill Heard Chevrolet in Union City, made the trip together and had a good outing. Petry got to show off his 14 second '83 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, powered by a modified corporate GM engine, complete with Lingenfelter Super Ram fuel injection system. Lecuona drove a pristine '95 Corvette, that still looked
new in spite of 100,000 plus miles and also covered the quarter mile in the 14 second range.

All winners received a $2000 40 inch Lock 'n Roll toolbox base, and the runner ups received a $500 Snap-On 1/2" drive cordless impact wrench. Also, 16 year old Kristin Cook from Auburn, GA, who won the burnout contest earlier in the day with her '86 Camaro, received a Snap-On cordless impact wrench.

Mark Hancock from Commerce, GA was thrilled to win Super Pro with his son's '05 M&M dragster (just moments after son Jeremy won Sportsman). Mark faced Milledgeville, GA racer Levi Archer's fast '84 Buick Regal in the final, and laid down a near perfect 5.008 second pass (5.00 dial) at 137.95mph, coupled with a .505 reaction time. Archer broke out trying to stay ahead of Hancock, with a 5.816 at 119.03mph (5.82 target). Earlier in the day, Jeremy called
Mark and actually had to persuade him to bring the dragster to the track, as Mark's original plans did not include racing. Hancock had a scare in the semi-final round against Victor Yancey, saying he lifted off the throttle early, and accidentally let Yancey take the finish line. Fortunately for Hancock, Yancey broke out by .001 seconds, rendering Yancey ('88 Camaro - Milledgeville, GA) the lone semi-finalist. "That finish line is a whole lot more complicated," exclaimed Hancock. He then added, "How about that! Father and son." He then added with a grin, "and to think, I taught him everything he knows."

"We were just going to have fun, switching cars, and running for a toolbox," said Sportsman winner Jeremy Hancock from Commerce, GA at the end of the race. Hancock chose to drive his dad's '01 Jeep Cherokee for the Snap On Tools event, which turned out to be a great decision. Hancock met Fred Markley's Austell, GA based '01 Corvette in the final, and essentially won
the race at the starting line with a .533 react. He then slammed the door of opportunity shut for Markley by nailing his dial in time of 16.02 with a 16.03 at 80.54mph. Markley's 'Vette, which had a lot of potential under the hood, broke out with a 12.88 at 88.95mph (13.50 dial). John Lawson Sr. ('68 Camaro - Jefferson, GA) and Scott Preves ('93 Lumina - Monroe, GA) were the
semi-final finishers. Hancock added, "I'm so proud of my dad. And to think, I had to talk him into racing today. Also, I want to thank my fiancée Ashley, Paula Hancock and all my friends for their support."

Jerry Hart, a master tech at Heritage Cadillac, took the Pro win against Whit Stark's Jasper, GA based '64 Dodge 330. Stark left the starting line an instant too quickly, resulting in a red light loss. Hart put the pedal to the metal in his Stockbridge, GA based '83 Camaro, and tripped the finish line beams with a decent 12.87 at 105.30mph (12.83 target). Stark also chose to run his machine on out, turning in an otherwise good10.52 at 123.03mph (10.51 dial). Long time B&M racer Tom Wallace ('66 Belvedere II - Carrollton, GA) and Randy Suttles ('81 Malibu - Elberton, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round. Hart used to race Atlanta Dragway in the '80s,
and enjoyed a couple of wins back then. He then took a long hiatus from drag racing, returning about three years ago. Today was his first outing of 2006, and his crew chief Jarret Sparks reminded him out loud that he was the one who made him get out of bed and come to the Snap On show, as Hart was considering staying home.

A large turnout of Motorcycles were also on hand for the Day at the Races. Zach Hulsey of Clermont, GA was the one who emerged on top, with his '98 Suzuki Bandit. Hulsey did not concern himself with the fact that his opponent Hershel Sorrell's '95 Suzuki ZX12 was much faster, and just settled down to the business at hand. He put a .189 second holeshot on Sorrells at the starting line, and then took advantage of that by slowing his bike to an 11.35 at 114.75mph (11.10 dial) at the finish line, crossing it .047 seconds in front of Sorrells. Sorrells was a bit off pace, carding a 9.01 at 137.44mph (8.90 dial). Greg Redd ('96 Honda - Emerson, GA) and Steve Jackson from Bogart, GA finished in the semi-finals. "I want to thank God first,"
said Hulsey. He then thanked Snap-On Tools for hosting the event. He then noted, "I've never won anything like this before." Hulsey has race two wheeled vehicles since the '80s, but did not begin drag racing motorcycles until the end of 2004.

NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals Postponed Until Monday

New Drag Racing DVD From Bee On Video

Jim Amos of Bee On Video has hit another home run with his latest drag racing DVD! This jewel of a DVD is titled Run What You Brung: Cecil County and is packed with on track action from the golden years and interviews with drag racing legends. You could probably call this a 99 minute time capsule of Cecil County Dragway history!

From an era when match races were the most exciting form of drag racing, this DVD takes you on a ride down memory lane with some of drag racings biggest stars. Some of the match races you will see are Malcolm Durham vs. Bud Shellenberger, Don Nicholson vs. Ronnie Sox, Malcolm Durham vs. Phil Bonner and Ed Schartman vs. Bob Harrop. The Schartman vs.Harrop race is when Harrop crashed his car. Interviews are added to the racing footage to give you the inside story from several drag racing stars!

The early years of drag racing also featured class racing and in my opinion, this was the most enjoyable period in drag racing. The DVD even includes A/S match race action between Stahl in his Hemi Mopar and Jenkins in his small block powered Nova! The racing action also features the 1965 SS & FX Invitational, the Factory Stock Showdown, a Top Fuel match and Top Stock/Jr. Stock action. This DVD is definitely worth the price!

Jim Amos is the man behind Bee On Video and he is to be commended for his preservation of drag racing history and for all of his exceptional work on his videos and DVDs. If you haven't seen his work before, this would be a great title to start with. Be sure to check out the complete Bee On Video library of drag racing and car show videos/DVDs.
