December Testing at South Georgia Motorsports Park
Marvin T. Smith
Professional teams made the journey south to prepare for the 2007 racing season. Early testers included Larry Morgan, V. Gaines, and Max Naylor, all running Morgan Mopar power. V. Gaines had the best times of this group, recording a near-track record 6.609 at 209.10 mph. Bob Vandergriff had his Georgia-based Top Fuel dragster out for some eighth mile testing. Bob ran the quickest and fastest eighth mile times ever recorded at SGMP with a 3.12 at 262 mph and a 3.14 at 263 mph. Peggy Llewellyn was out making practice laps on the S&S Suzuki school bike under the watchful eye of George Bryce. Peggy made the quickest lap ever on the school bike breaking the previous record held by Angelle Sampey and two others. Peggy plans to announce a sponsorship deal soon to run the entire Pro Stock season. The next week, Troy Coughlin and Quain Stott brought their new Pro Modifieds straight from the PRI show in Orlando to make some check out runs. Neither racer made a full pass. Also on hand was Greg Stanfield in his Pro Stock car. Carey Goforth was also out in December testing his Pro Stocker. Testing will continue in January.
