Nostalgia Nights Drag Fest
by Mark Adams and Marvin T. Smith
Nostalgia racers gathered at Douglas Dragway for a two day dragfest on April 13 and 14. Racers came from as far away as West Palm Beach, FL and Mooresville, NC. Ed Fargo's Southern Slingshots put on a great show with eleven front-engined dragsters. Fastest car was Dave Workman's dragster at 4.80 138 mph on the eighth mile racing surface. Dave also did eighth mile burnouts to thrill the crowd. John Ring's injected chevy dragster ran a quick 5:20 @ 130 mph. Several altereds and gassers also turned out for the event. As a special treat, track manager Tim Pafford brought in two jets to thrill the crowd. Elaine Larson's jet dragster topped 200 mph, and the Danchunks 55-57 Chevy Restoration Parts jet funny car ran a fine 214 mph.
The Saturday night Cackle Event was unfortunately rained out after the Saturday racing had concluded. Grand Marshall for the Cackle was Denny Fenstermaker, who brought along his restored Roger Gates' top fuel dragster from the 1960s. National Hot Rod Reunion announcer Marvin Noel was on hand to lend his colorful voice to the proceedings.
Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum in Tennessee sponsored two 4 FT trophies. Best Nostalgia Dragster trophy went to Dave Workman's "Auburn Weed Killer Special" 1962 blown big block chevy dragster. Best Engineered trophy went to Mark Adams' "Outlaws & Legends" big block Chevy Competition Coupe/Altered. Look for another nostalgia event this Fall. Photos
Lane Choice Costs WJ in Vegas Quarterfinals

After qualifying seventh, Warren Johnson experienced both ends of the competitive spectrum during Sunday's final eliminations of the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. In the opening stanza, the GM Performance Parts Pontiac GTO racer combined a seven hundredths of a second starting line advantage with a solid 6.791-second, 202.58 mph pass to defeat defending Pro Stock Jason Line on a holeshot, with Line posting a quicker 6.775-second elapsed time in the losing effort.
In the second round against David Connolly, however, Johnson was relegated to the less-preferred right hand lane, a major detriment in light of eleven of the first twelve rounds of Pro Stock competition being won by racers on the left side of the track. Unfortunately, WJ was unable to break this trend despite his respectable .048 reaction time and representative, 6.802-second time, 202.61 mph pass, as his opponent covered the quarter-mile in 6.750-seconds to advance to the semifinals.
Despite seeing his weekend end prematurely, Johnson was encouraged by his team's continued progress.
"Lane choice probably had a significant impact on today's outcome, but comparing our runs to the others in the right hand lane during that round, we seemed to do all right, although it obviously wasn't enough to get us to the next round. But going into eliminations we knew the lanes were uneven, so the ultimate responsibility falls on us for not holding on to lane choice.
"However, we're definitely making progress with our GM Performance Parts GTO. We were able to make a couple runs on Saturday with our new engine, which looked extremely good on the dyno, and even though the tune-up was off, it showed some promise. On top of that, we have a few new things coming up that will hopefully put us right back with the best of them. Even the driver's alarm clock seems to be working better, so we're heading in the right direction – we just need to pick up the pace a little bit more."
BAZEMORE SUFFERS FIRST OPENING-ROUND LOSS OF '07 SEASON

LAS VEGAS (April 15, 2007) – The sport of NHRA drag racing can be humbling at times. Much like golf, the world's fastest motor sport keeps teams honest on a very regular basis. Having piloted Funny Cars and dragsters for nearly 20 years, 20-time NHRA winner Whit Bazemore has much experience with the up-and-downs of driving nitro-powered Funny Cars and Top Fuel dragsters. After qualifying his Matco Tools dragster in the No. 4 position with a stout 4.498-second elapsed time, the first 4.4-second pass of his career, Bazemore was pitted against No. 13 qualifier Cory McClenathan for the third time this season. All three meetings coming in the first round of eliminations. Bazemore had edged the 29-time NHRA winner in the two previous races. On Sunday morning at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Bazemore used a very slight starting-line advantage to get the jump at the start, but the Matco Tools rail overpowered the race track and slowed to a run of 6.270 seconds at 139.85 mph. McClenathan drove his FRAM-backed dragster to a solid pass of 4.639-seconds to earn the win light and trip to the quarterfinals. It was Bazemore’s first opening-round loss on the year. "The team is really a great team," Bazemore said. "It's frustrating when we don't perform to our potential. It's so easy to make a mistake. It's racing. It's frustrating because we ran well in qualifying and to blow the tires off like that is a surprise to everyone. I feel good about what I did. I need to work to be able to get the car to recover. I caught it that time, but I'm still pedaling it too quickly. The weekend was good for me personally. I'm here to race and here to win and there’s no doubt in my mind. I feel good about all that."The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, April 26-29, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. He has two career Funny Car victories at the Atlanta race, 2002 and 2004. Bazemore qualified his Matco Tools Funny Car eighth at Atlanta Dragway last season.
