MORRISON, Colo. (July 13, 2006) - Whit Bazemore has an outstanding record at Bandimere Speedway: two Funny Car wins, one runner-up finish and five No. 1 qualifiers. So, there's no question that the driver of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car is eager to get back on the scenic quarter-mile dragstrip perched on the side of a mountain at this weekend's Mopar Mile-High Nationals.
Bazemore has had the car to beat in recent NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events after struggling early in the season. He's qualified No. 2 four times this year, but has yet to turn the car's improvement into his first national-event victory of the year. He came close in Columbus, earning his first runner-up finish of 2006.
His No. 1 goal for this weekend, he says, is to win for his longtime sponsor Matco Tools.
"We have always done very well here. Bandimere Speedway is a great facility and the fans are awesome, especially on Friday night when the place is just jam-packed the way it always is," says Bazemore, an avid cyclist who's attempting to pedal to the top of 14,200-ft. Mt. Evans today. "It's an event for the city of Denver, and when you're really proud to be an NHRA drag
racer is when you're racing at Bandimere Speedway. It makes you proud of the sport. Personally, it makes me proud to have won this race twice, because it's such a great place and they really do it right.
"We like coming here and trying to reward the fans with a good show."

G2 Plans to Resume Success
Chip Ellis/Matt Smith/G2 Motorsports NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle
Pre-Race Team Report
Event: Mopar Mile-High Nationals
Dates: July 14-16, 2006
Location: Bandimere Speedway, Morrison, Colorado
G2 Plans to Resume Success
The G2 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle team finished June's three-races-in-three-weeks grind with two straight wins, split between drivers Chip Ellis and Matt Smith. The team also qualified well, with Ellis nailing down two number ones and becoming the class's second 6-second driver. Now they speed into July and the high-altitude Denver event, planning for the same level of success they left behind in June.
George Bryce
G2/Star Racing builder/tuner/crew chief
"Something I learned from Team Winston is that when you start winning and you start doing good, you have to work even harder," said George Bryce. "Before that, we'd win a race, work on customer stuff and rest on our laurels, then get our tails beat at the next race. Once we got it all
figured out, we won three championships in a row."
Bryce and the crew back at Americus, Georgia, have spent the last three weeks pouring over the team's shiny S&S V-twins. "We had one engine that used more fuel than the rest and was the fastest one, so we tried to emulate the design and see if that would yield us more than one 6-second engine. S&S builds a powerful motor and they're all virtually identical. But when you're
working and tweaking on them, they end up like people and they all have different personalities. You have to learn the personalities of each in order to work well with them.
"I'd like to thank the S&S crew of Todd Olson, Brian Perkins, Steve Rominski and Charlie Hadayia, all led by Brett Smith, the president of S&S Cycle. They've changed the face of NHRA POWERade Pro Stock motorcycle drag racing with this engine package that's virtually available to anyone, and which is available exclusively through G2 Motorsports.
"I've been preaching and teaching forever to bust your butt and let the scoreboard do the yacking. It's been said in the magazines and forums that we've had the bikes to beat the last four races. Now I'm not saying that, but I want to keep it that way. My proudest moment was when we qualified 1 and 2 at Chicago in that field of motorcycles where so many can win. And then to see the S&S motors do so well against all the other bikes, especially the V-Rods from The Motor Company and the 1655 Suzukis."
Matt Smith
Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell
George Bryce now has the staff to "work even harder" on the G2 race team while also servicing customer bikes and motors. But at his own one-man, motorcycle engine-building operation in King, North Carolina, Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell driver Matt Smith has to keep his customers happy. "Fred Camarena's stuff shipped this morning," Smith reported on the
Wednesday before the Denver event. "And I'm putting a 2 valve motor together for Rick Slagle of Action Motorsports in Monticello, Kentucky. He bought my old bike, is going to get his license, and hopes to be out by Memphis.
"I haven't seen the Buell since the last race. They've rewired my bike and got the motors fresh on them. I never ran the Buell in Denver, so it will be interesting. V-twins are supposed to have an advantage in the thin air, so we'll wait and see. I told Chip it was my turn to win this time. To make everybody happy, we'll just keep rotating wins back and forth!"
Chip Ellis
DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell
When not working on bikes at the G2/Star Racing shop and spending as much time with wife Kathy and daughter McKenzie as he could, DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell driver Chip Ellis was breaking things these last three weeks. "I blew up my boat motor," Ellis said about his 260 horsepower Mercury outboard. "Blew it up on Lake Blackshear. Ken Johnson had to pull me back with that little fishing boat he calls 'Gator.' Then I put my spare motor on and blew that one too. At least we got all the blowin' up out of the way before we go to Denver!
"We went through all the engines on Matt's bike and my bike, put new tires on 'em, normal routine maintenance. We have some new stuff and we hope it all works. We changed the port work around a little bit. Then we put 'em back on the truck and headed out."
Ellis, who got altitude sickness, qualified second at Bandimere last year and made it to the semis. "We just got beat because the bike slowed down. I think it will take a high 7.40 to get in the field. I think we'll improve on the track record, and that somebody will be in the 7.30s. I think I will
be."

WILSON TO PILOT PRO STOCKER IN HONOR OF LATE TEAM MOPAR DRIVER SCOTT GEOFFRION AT MOPAR MILE-HIGH NATIONALS EVENT
TEAM MOPAR CONTACT:
Misha Geisert
J.R. Thompson Company
Center Line, Mich. - Race fans will see a familiar sight take to the track of the upcoming 27th Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, as Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing have announced that a Scott Geoffrion tribute car will compete in the event. The DSR Mopar Dodge Stratus R/T will compete carrying the colors of late Team Mopar driver Geoffrion, who passed away on May 8. Race driver Gene Wilson has been selected to pilot the car in the upcoming event at Bandimere Speedway.
"It's an honor to be selected to drive a car in tribute of Scott [Geoffrion]," Wilson said. "There are several great drivers who have been part of the Mopar family that could have been chosen, but I'm really looking forward to getting to being a part of this effort. Don Schumacher Racing and Mopar have a great pro stock effort put together, and I'm looking forward to getting back to racing as part of a great team."
Wilson is no stranger to the NHRA Pro Stock ranks, having earned the series' Rookie of the Year title in 2002. He also won the 2001 IHRA Pro Stock championship, winning a record-tying eight events en route to the title. Wilson is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of a pro stock machine and feels the Mopar Mile-High Nationals is the perfect event to do so.
"I'm really looking forward to returning to the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals this week," Wilson said. "Being in Golden, Colorado, for the Mopar Big Block Party and being in the Denver area for five days is really a great way to start the weekend. This event is really an all-Mopar event, and it's going to be great to get reacquainted with a lot of people. I'm really excited to drive the tribute car, and we're going to work hard to run well all weekend. I'm looking forward to racing on Sunday."
Team owner Don Schumacher is also pleased that the Geoffrion Tribute car will take part in this week's Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals event with Wilson behind the wheel.
"We at DSR are proud to field a car at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals which will commemorate the outstanding contributions made by the late Scott Geoffrion to the sport of NHRA drag racing as part of the Mopar racing family," Schumacher said. "He was a remarkable competitor and we hope this special entry will help Scott's friends, family, fans and fellow racers remember him as warmly as we do."
Geoffrion is remembered as a part of the "Dodge Boys Era" that carried Mopar's domination in the NHRA Pro Stock Series in the 1990s. He joined David Hutchens' Wayne County Speedway/Dodge Boys team in 1992. Geoffrion captured his first NHRA Pro Stock event at Memphis Motorsports Park, defeating Bob Glidden for the win. He was the series' runner-up in 1992 and 1994, and was named Car Craft Driver of the Year in 1994. The fifth driver to join the Holley 6-Second Club, Geoffrion's best performance was a 6.983/198.63. His last ride in the series came in 1993. The late driver is survived by his children Kyle and Alexa, his brother Rick, his sister Michelle and his parents Richard and Jeanne.
The tribute paint scheme that Wilson's car will carry for the 27th Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals was designed by Competition Graphics of Farmington Hills, Mich. Competition Graphics is one of America's premier motorsports graphics suppliers.

Strong record in Denver bodes well for GM Performance Parts GTO team
Sugar Hill, Ga., July 11, 2006 - When a normally successful participant in any competitive endeavor experiences less than expected results, they will immediately take corrective action in order to regain their winning form, which usually entails additional practice to verify that no aspect of their game has been adversely altered. For example, a baseball player mired in a hitting slump will spend extended time in a batting cage working on their swing. At the same time, they will also look for any edge that will assist them in getting back on track, including looking forward to competing at a location where they have excelled in the past.
The same scenario applies in the world of NHRA drag racing. Since winning at the second stop on the POWERade Drag Racing circuit in Phoenix, AZ, Warren Johnson and his GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team have, by their own admission, struggled to find the consistency necessary to duplicate that effort. They have worked tirelessly, testing whenever possible and spending countless hours going over the race car at their shop in Sugar Hill, GA. Although the turnaround is far from complete, there have been some flashes of brilliance in recent races. Therefore, they enter this weekend’s Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO determined to put all the pieces together and return to their winning ways.
"Naturally, our goal is to run well all the time, but, unfortunately, as of late that has not been the case," stated Johnson. "Therefore, we look to take advantage of any opportunity to get our program back on track, and Denver looks like the perfect place to start our resurrection. Historically, we have performed well at Bandimere Speedway, and we had a good test there a few weeks ago. I was pleased with what we learned, and believe we can even step it up a notch further when we go back for the Mile-Highs this weekend."
Aiding in the Johnson crew's recuperative efforts is their long history of prior successes at Bandimere Speedway, site of this weekend's event. Located on the outskirts of Denver near the town of Morrison, this picturesque facility offers dramatic views and tremendous competition as participants strive to make horsepower in the 5,860-foot altitude. Despite the challenging conditions, it has been a track where "The Professor" has taught repeated lessons, as evidenced by his five wins (including three of the last five years) in 10 final round appearances, four No. 1 qualifying performances and a stellar 51-17 elimination round record. Arriving in the Centennial State as the defending Mile-High Nationals winner, Johnson credits his early days of competing at tracks across the Rockies with his skill for adapting to racing in the thin air.
"I'm not entirely sure there is a secret to our success on the mountain, because we've had an equal amount of success racing in Gainesville, where the conditions are the exact opposite end of the spectrum," related Johnson. "I guess you could say that I'm good at racing under extreme conditions, because I love a challenge. It's just that I've raced there for so long, including in Pueblo, where it's five to six hundred feet higher and Continental Divide, which is also over 5,000 feet.
"I also competed in the altitude before the advent of computers, so I had to learn to race under these conditions using the tried and true method of reading spark plugs, retarding timing and doing whatever it takes to make the car run faster. Without having all the modern day tuning tools at my disposal, I developed a better feeling of what needed to be changed, instead of relying on a computer to tell me what to do."
This race also marks the start of the second half of the season, increasing the importance of getting off to a good start. Confident that they have regained control of their 1,400-horsepower hot rod, Johnson has a renewed sense of confidence heading into Denver and the three-race West Coast Swing.
"The race car has not been our problem," stated Johnson. "We just have not been attacking it properly. We put some additional data acquisition equipment in it, which took some fine tuning to get it to work properly, and over the last few races we’ve shown that we can bring it back to life. It started to run fairly well in Englishtown, but we had a slip-up in St. Louis. Having gotten that out of our system, we can get back to work this weekend in Denver.
"Entering the second half of the season I actually feel a lot better about our GM Performance Parts GTO than I did at the start of the year, because there were a few areas I didn't think we were strong in, which showed in a couple of races. I think we have shored that area up, so we can come back and improve significantly from here on out."
Quick Notes on Warren Johnson & the GM Performance Parts GTO team entering the 27th annual NHRA Mile-High Nationals:
WJ Has Mastered Climbing the Mountain: This will be Warren's 23rd career NHRA national event "on the mountain." In his previous 22 starts at Bandimere Speedway, he has five wins (including one year ago), and a strong 51-17 elimination round record for a .750 win percentage.
Warren Qualifies Well in Morrison: In 22 Bandimere starts, WJ has four No. 1 qualifying performances, 19 starts in the top half of the field and a 4.13 average starting position.
One Year Ago - Defending Champion: Warren qualified second with a 7.112-second elapsed time with a top speed of 194.24 mph, and defeated Erica Enders, Ron Krisher, Jim Yates and David Connolly en route to the 95th national event win of his career.
Career Best Elapsed Time: 6.679 seconds, Gainesville, FL, 3/20/05
Career best top speed: 207.88 mph, Englishtown, NJ, 6/16/06

Poised & prepared ACDelco Cobalt crew mines for NHRA gold in the Colorado Rockies
Sugar Hill, Ga., July 11, 2006 - Several months ago, at the start of this year's POWERade Drag Racing season, ACDelco Cobalt pilot Kurt Johnson was among the many competitors eyeing a run at the 2006 Pro Stock championship. However, facing a 23-race title chase, this second-generation racer established additional objectives to gauge his performance along the way and validate his claim for the golden "Wally".
For example, one such benchmark came early in the season. After getting off to an uncharacteristically slow start in the first four races, he found himself outside of the Top Ten and facing a large points deficit. At that point he decided he would need to be in the Top Five by the midseason mark in order to have a realistic shot at the championship. With two wins in three final round appearances and two semi-final finishes in the next seven races, he easily accomplished this initial goal.
Now, as the stars of the straight-line travel to Denver, CO for the Mile-High Nationals and the start of the second half, Johnson and crew have challenged themselves with a formula to put them on top when their racing year draws to a close in November.
"We're pretty confident heading into the Mile-Highs," stated Johnson. "Over the last few races, everyone on the crew has been doing their job, our ACDelco Cobalt is telling us what it wants and responding to those changes and we’re seeing the results on the racetrack.
"We had a huge win in Chicago, a runner-up finish in Topeka, and were one thousandth off the pole in St. Louis. If we can maintain that pace throughout the second half, averaging a semi-final or final round finish, we should be fine. Although we enter every race to win, realistically we know we won’t win them all, but if we get our share, as well as have a little bit of luck go our way, I like our chances.
"There are a lot of good cars that still have a shot at the POWERade championship. It's going to be tough, and it might even come down to which side the coin lands on, but we’re committed to coming out on top."
As the opening stop in both the second half of the season and the traditional three-race West Coast swing, Bandimere Speedway presents the competitors with its own unique challenges. Nestled in the side of the Rocky Mountains in the Denver suburb of Morrison, it sits at an altitude of 5,860 feet, where the lack of horsepower-producing oxygen cripples the carbureted Pro Stock Cars. Naturally, the key to success lies in adapting to the conditions, requiring a solid set of notes and a good handle on your race car. With two wins and four final round appearances in his previous trips to this scenic speedplant, Johnson is confident he has both areas handled, and is cautiously optimistic about continuing his championship charge.
"A lot is made of the conditions at Bandimere, but in reality, it's just like anywhere else," opined Johnson. "You have a starting line, a finish line, and win lights. We had a good test there a few weeks ago, so we should be in good shape. We found what direction not to go in, which will be helpful heading into this weekend. Hopefully, we can be strong from Q1 (the first qualifying session), put it on the pole or near the top and have lane choice for round one on Sunday. We'll start from there and work our way forward. We've won in Denver before, so we have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done. Now, it’s a matter of doing it.
"We'd certainly like to get the second half off to a good start, but we're not putting any extra emphasis on any of these next three races. After all, they will neither make you nor break you. We've used the time since the St. Louis race to get everything ready, and have what we feel is a solid inventory of race motors ready to run. Our ACDelco Cobalt is fully prepared, the crew is focused on the task ahead, and we’re ready to get the job done. I guess you could say we're ready to climb the mountain."
Quick Notes on Kurt Johnson & the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team entering The Mile-High NHRA Nationals:
Kurt Has Been to the Top of the Mountain: This will be KJ's 14th career appearance at Bandimere Speedway, where he has two wins (in 1995 & 2000) and a 26-11 elimination round record for a .703 win percentage.
KJ’s Bandimere Qualifying Stats: In his 13 previous career starts in Colorado, Kurt has one No. 1 qualifying performance (in 2000), ten starts in the top five positions, and an average starting position of 4.53.
One year ago: Kurt qualified fourth with an elapsed time of 7.134 seconds and a top speed of 194.04 mph, and advanced to the semi-finals.
Career Best Elapsed Time: 6.646 sec., Joliet, IL, 6/11/06
