Jack Redd has officially named GeorgiaDragRacing.com as a Jack Approved (JA) website!

Jack Redd recently called and informed me that we are on his JA list. I'm sure many of you know who Jack is, but for those that don't, Jack was a columnist/reporter/editor for several of the drag racing newspapers in the 1960s. It was a BIG DEAL to be on Jack's JA list back then and I still consider it to be quite an honor! Thanks, Jack! I doubt there are many people in this world that have attended more drag races than Jack has. He is also a member of (and helps promote) the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame ( & Reunion - October - Henderson, NC). If you attend the reunion, be sure to say hello to Jack - if you want to hear some wild drag racing stories, Jack's your man!

ADRL Dragpalooza DVD and Video by Scott Caudill

Review by Marvin T. Smith

Scott Caudill has produced a wonderful visual record of the first American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Dragpalooza race at South Georgia Motorsports Park in May of this year. If you love Pro Mods, then this disc/tape is for you. There are lots of Georgia connections: Georgia cars, Georgia track, Georgia sunshine, Georgia winner! You get the idea.

Scott works hard to document the ADRL series and other independent Pro Mod races in the South. These are not events you will ever see on ESPN2, but Scott does a great job of capturing the excitement of the races and recording the history of our sport. He uses many camera angles to track the action, and the quality of the film is first rate. I met Scott for the first time at Dragpalooza, and he was excited by the high quality of the South Georgia Motorsports Park lighting system. Sure enough, his night footage is so good you would think it was taken in daylight. Scott does not add voiceovers, but simply records the engine sounds, the announcers, and the crowd for a real feeling of being there. If you are one of the fans who tires of the talking heads on TV, this is the tape for you! The track announcer is usually easy to hear, and Scott also zooms in one the top end lights so elapsed times and speeds are easily seen.

Scott sent along the DVD version to review. It consists of two DVDs and although I didn't time it, there must be at least four to five hours of coverage. One DVD contains the Friday time trials and the Sunday team challenge event, while the other contains the Saturday qualifying and quick eight races. The American Drag Racing League has two pro mod classes: Pro Extreme is an open field in which blown, turbo, and nitrous cars compete heads up, and Pro Nitrous is limited to nitrous oxide assisted vehicles. Scott took an unusual editing route, and separated the classes, so it is like seeing two completely different races on the Saturday disc. First up is the Pro Nitrous field. After three rounds of qualifying, there are three rounds of eliminations for the eight car field. Shannon Jenkins dominates running as quick as 4.00 on the eighth mile, although Alabamians Johnny Pilcher and Keith Baker make strong showings each holding the ADRL record at one point during qualifying. Following the nitrous cars, there are three rounds of Pro Extreme qualifying and three rounds of racing for the eight qualified cars. If you like three second time slips, this is the race for you! Half of the field qualified in the threes, and several ran threes in the eliminations. Georgian Eddie Ware set the ADRL record at 3.97, later to be eclipsed by Bil Clanton during eliminations. The bump spot for the eight car field was an ADRL record 4.030. I attended this event in person to cover it for GeorgiaDragRacing.com and National Dragster, and I wondered how Scott would handle the troubled Saturday night finals. There were problems with the tree, and it was declared a non-race. An eleven o'clock curfew prevented the final round from being rerun on Saturday, and it was run during the first round of Sunday’s team challenge event. Since Scott doesn't use a voiceover, it would have been impossible to understand what happened, so Scott took the logical course of action and simply deleted the Saturday non-final, and only showed the final on Sunday. Georgian Bil Clanton took the win over Texan Josh Hernandez. This method of showing the final works out great for Clanton fans, as they get to see Bil whip Josh again during the Sunday Team event on the other disc!

The other disc has the Friday and Sunday racing. Friday warm-up action includes some great runs. The event opens with the first car out, Georgian Bennie McDonald in his beautiful 53 Corvette. Unfortunately, Bennie gets out of shape and tried to climb the safety wall in a very scary accident. Bennie was OK, but the car was damaged and won't race again at this event. Other highlights include some very quick runs by Shannon Jenkins and Todd Bauknecht, who scored the first three second run of the event.

Sunday's event is a team challenge format. The quickest 11 cars from the outlaw team race the quickest 11 cars that have raced in the NHRA/AMS Pro Mod events in three rounds of action. Outlaw qualifier no. 1 races AMS no. 1, Outlaw no. 2 races AMS no. 2, etc. For the second round, the cars are matched up by first round times. The same procedure is used for round three. One point was given for a win, one point for top speed of each round, and one point for low elapsed time of each round. The first team to win 20 points is declared the team winner. The Outlaws took this event by storm, actually securing the win during round 2 although the third round was run for the fans. The final score after three rounds was Outlaws 31 to AMS Allstars 8. Highlights of the team event were some awesome runs by John Lynam, the best being a new track record 3.939 at over 185 and a great 3.942/185.92 pass. Unfortunately for Lynam, official ADRL records could only be set during the Saturday portion of the show, but he did leave with both ends of the SGMP track record.

If you want to see some of the best Pro Mod racing on the best track in the South, get this tape. DVD copies are $20 and VHS are $15, including postage. If you have questions about this film or any of Scott's other excellent productions, email him at scaudill@energyunited.net. Send the money to:

East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame and 2005 Reunion Update

From the office of Nancy Wilson, Director of the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame and 2005 Reunion.

Wally Parks Award

We are announcing a first in special awards for motorsports, an annual award honoring the statesman of the year. Our board of directors decided at our recent board meeting to honor one of the major icons Wally Parks, former Editor of Hot Rod Magazine and founder of the National Hot Rod Association to be the first recipient for 2005. Hereafter, this annual tribute to motor sports finest will be named the Wally Parks Motorsports Statesman of the Year Award.

Cotton Owens

Excitement is building for the 4th annual East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame & Reunion to be held October 14, 15 & 16, 2005 in Historic Downtown Henderson, NC. The event is one of the Vance County Tourism Departments special projects along with the "Show, Shine, Shag and Dine. Sponsors include, Superior Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Harris Incorporated.
We couldn't be more excited to announce Grand National Champion, Cotton Owens of Spartanburg, SC, will be among the Motorsports legends attending the October event. Owens had a successful career in NASCAR and he participated in the sport of drag racing, announced Nancy Wilson, Director/Event Planner of the Vance County Tourism Department.

In the sixties, a race attraction in Atlanta was to pair up a NASCAR stars in a Super Stock match race against one of Atlanta's top dragsters or occasionally against another NASCAR star. According to Arnie Beswick, the strip promoters would arrange for a NASCAR star to drive a local car provided by Phil Bonner, Dyno Don Nicholson, Hubert Platt, or Huston Platt. Following the NASCAR ban on the Chrysler Hemi in the mid-sixties, some NASCAR stars built their own drag machines.

Match races were held between May 1963 and May 1966. Most of these races took place at Yellow River Dragstrip or Southeastern International Dragway in Dallas, but were also staged at Cumming and Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway. NASCAR stars involved include Fireball Roberts, Fred Lorenzen, Parnelli Jones, Wendell Scott, Richard Petty, Lee Roy Yarbrough, Cotton Owens, Curtis Turner, Jr. Johnson and Darel Dierenger.

Phil Bonner often provided a Ford 63 Galaxie or 64 Thunderbolt for these match races when a Ford NASCAR star was involved. Bonner actually had a second car used for these match races, sponsored by LaFayette Ford, although his own car was sometimes used.

Cotton Owens built a Dodge Dart station wagon for drag racing. He said it was a great experience. He put a Hemi in the back of a 1965 Dodge Dart station wagon, painted it yellow and called it The Cotton Picker. You could adjust the car to transfer so much weight to the rear wheels it would do wheelies.

The Cotton Picker is now owned by a collector, Marco DeCesaris from Maryland. The car will be on display at the event along with the original builder and owner, Cotton Owens. Owens will be available Saturday and Sunday to share some of his historic moments and for autographs.

Sunday, Owens will be honored for his contribution to motorsports. Owens won more than 100 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour races during the 1950's before making the transition to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series competition. For six straight years (1957-62), Owens captured at least one series win - Owens claimed three wins in 1960, all of which were in his home state of South Carolina. His most successful season was in 1959 where he won two races, notched 22 top-10 finishes (through 37 starts) and ranked second in the series season-long points chase to Lee Petty. In 1970, Owens was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame at Darlington, SC, Raceway.

Drag race icons and nostalgic drag cars from nineteen states will be here for the three-day event. Legends, Hubert Platt, Phil Bonner, Randy Payne, Ronnie Sox, Bud Faubel, Sam Carroll, Billy Holt, Steve Earwood, Barbara Hamilton, Wally Bell, Terry Earwood, Sy Sidebotham, John Livingston, Tony Feil, Ed Eaton, Gene Fulton, Bob Banning, Andy Phillips, Bill Taylor, Bunk Bobo, Kenny Warren, Jack Redd, Tom Raley, Dick Brannan, Bobby Warren, Jerry Baltes, Sam Auxier, Tom Sneden, Dave Reitz, Herb McCandles, Frank Spittle, Fred Bear, Pork Zartman, Gene Altizer, Dave Hales, Carroll Hahn, Bill Jeunette, Sherman Sligh, Tom "Smoker" Smith, Jack Olcott, Fred Ristagno, Joe Jacono, Bob Fermier, Butch & Gene Mori and many more will be attending.

DOUBLE DOUBLE FOR CONAWAY AND GLOVER, YOUNG IN THIRD STRAIGHT FINAL

(Commerce, GA - July 23) Team PTI racer Russ Glover and Chuck Conaway from Cumming, GA enjoyed their second double win at Atlanta Dragway in 2005. Glover and Conaway won their respective classes earlier this year on March 19, and then pulled off the feat again this evening. Jesse Young made it to his third straight final in as many weeks, and pulled off his second Atlanta Dragway win of the year, in the Quick 32 class. In addition to the special Quick 32 race, fans enjoyed watching passes by Top Fuel Harley racer Larry Knight from Dawsonville, GA, piloting an '04 Truett-Osborne bike. Another exhibition car, a new 2005 "GTO" Alcohol Funny Car piloted by Mark Rogers, made several quick passes in the 6.80 second range at 200 plus mph. Rogers' team plans to participate in future NHRA Division Two events. Also, congratulations are in order to Atlanta Dragway racer Kelsey Lynn, who won the NHRA Eastern Conference finals July 16 in the 11 year old class.

"I want to give a great BIG thank you to John Swaim," said Russ Glover from Cumming, GA after winning in Super Pro class. The 2002 Forsyth Central graduate and current Gainesville College student wasn't even planning to race, due to his tow vehicle being broken, and no money available for repairs. On top of that, he was also dealing with second degree burns on his right (transbrake button) hand and arm. However, John Swaim (father of Team PTI racers Jake and Joe Swaim) stepped up at the last minute, and volunteered to tow Glover's 1981 Team PTI / Hedman Husler / Valvoline Speedcraft dragster to Atlanta Dragway. Glover decided to deal with the burns and give it the "old college try". He missed the first time trial, but managed to make his way through the rounds anyway, and faced off against July 9 race winner, Henry Snelgrove, Jr, in the final. Glover had a bit of a holeshot advantage at the starting line, and turned it into his second 2005 win, pedaling to a 5.83 at 117.00mph (5.80 dial). Snelgrove was closer to the mark, but second across the finish line with his Dahlonega, GA based '95 Spitzer dragster, carding a 5.46, 123.86mph pass (5.45 dial). Joe Rampley ('79 Malibu - Gainesville, GA) and Thomas Bell ('05 Undercover dragster - Toccoa, GA) finished in the semi-final round. "Now I can afford to go to school," exclaimed Glover, whose tuition is due on the 28th of July. He then thanked God, Team PTI for making it possible to race this year, and also thanked Fain & Mitchell properties and Tara Fine Jewelry for their help.

Chuck Conaway from Cumming, GA won his third Sportsman race of 2005 (and second in July), pulling into the second spot in Sportsman class points by taking the win light against points leader Chris Carlile of Canton, GA. Conaway's dead on 11.78 at 112.09mph in his '66 Chevy II wagon would have been tough to beat, but Carlile made it easy for him in the final by turning
on the big tomato colored bulb with his '69 Camaro. He then chose to run his car out, and carded a 10.33 at 133.55mph (10.40 dial). After installing new drag slicks, Conaway was distracted by a rattling sound coming from his drivetrain, and eventually traced it to the planetary gears in his transmission, after they became very noisy during competition rounds. He didn't let that stop him, and went on to victory lane. Tom Moran ('72 Scamp - Walhalla, SC) and Matthew Bates ("Thanks mom and dad for letting me borrow your '99 Formula Firebird" - Loganville, GA) were the semi-final pair.

"It was a hard fought race today. No doubt. But, it was a lot of fun," stated Auburn, GA racer Mardy Kennedy after winning Trophy Street with his "Banana Boat" '64 Ford Econoline pickup. Kennedy faced off against Commerce, GA racer Ashley Dumas' '86 Monte Carlo SS, and even though Dumas had a little reaction time advantage, Kennedy's 13.19 at 101.31mph (13.18 target) sealed the deal. Dumas took the big end stripe first, but broke out (went too quick) with a 13.69 at 94.63mph (13.77 dial). Mel Abney ('67 Camaro - Cumming, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

Defending 8-12 Jr Dragster champ and 2005 Night of Fire winner Joshua Sisson (11 years old) of Gainesville, GA enjoyed another 2005 victory after defeating Team PTI racer Justin Fancher from Conyers, GA. The 11 year old Fancher took a slight reaction time advantage, but was unable to use it after his car fell off the pace to a 9.15 at 69.75mph (9.09 dial). Sisson's machine was very close, carding a race winning 9.02 at 72.37mph (9.01 dial). Sisson again thanked his sponsors, C.L. Landscape, TRI Refrigeration, Randy Kinsey Construction, Specialty Lawn Service, Mingledorff's, Mulberry Farms and America's Finest Car Wash. John Gordon (10 - Hiram, GA) took home a semi-finalist trophy for his efforts.

Fourteen year old Danielle Krause from Peachtree City, GA faced two time champion "Mad Matt" Gillen of Gainesville, GA in the 13-17 Jr Dragster final round. Gillen was quicker in the reaction time department with his Valvoline machine, but suffered torque converter problems mid-track and slowed to an 8.76 at 76.58mph (8.40 dial). Krause cut it close, taking the win stripe .005 seconds ahead of Gillen with an 8.37 at 78.13mph (8.28 dial). "Wild Kyle" Denton was the single semi-final finisher. "This one's for my grandpa, Tom Walton, whose birthday is today," stated Krause. She then thanked Bill Gillen and Alton Clements for their help.

Jesse Young ended his day on a high note by winning the special Quick 32 class. Young has now been in a final round for three straight weeks; winning the regularly scheduled Super Pro race July 9, finishing runner up in Quick 32 on July 16, and defeating Tommy Motes' Loganville, GA based '92 Undercover dragster in tonight's action. Young slowed his car a bit near the finish line, but ran a dead-on 5.02 at 131.90mph for the win. Motes crossed the finish line .009 seconds later, running 5.32 at 128.49mph (5.31 dial). Steve Adam's Buford, GA based '78 Malibu wagon suffered a flat tire after completing his burnout in the semi-final round, which stopped his progress for the evening. Young thanked his dad David, engine builder Buford Heavy and his girlfriend Corie.

BAZEMORE STRUGGLES TO QUALIFY 15TH IN SEATTLE

DON SCHUMACHER RACING
Contact: Judy Stropus

KENT, Wash. (July 23, 2005) - Whit Bazemore and the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus Funny Car team struggled through four qualifying rounds for the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals, to earn 15th place. Bazemore remained upbeat, nevertheless.

Bazemore's 5.004/312.57, 4.999/310.55, 17.291/81.70 and 6.730/125.10 passes were not characteristic of the progress the "new" team has made since Englishtown, N.J., in June and after qualifying No. 2 in Denver last week.

"Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps back to take a couple forward," said Bazemore, two-time winner this season and Funny Car points leader early on. "We've had some really weird mechanical problems this weekend on the Matco Tools Dodge that have kept us from going down the race track.

"The fact is we still qualified and we've got a car that has a potential to run extremely well, so we're just working hard to reach that potential. Tomorrow we may reach it.

"The first day we had a problem with the fuel system and we had a computer issue the first run that kept us from finding that problem. The first day was basically a write-off, and this morning we had an electrical short that cost us that run. We went into that last session with basically no runs down the race track, with full power. So, you have to find the parameters of what the race car and the track will take in the given conditions. Because of our earlier errors we had only one run to do that in today.

"Like I said, the potential is there, it's making good power; it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot where the car is happy and it's going to go down the track a lot."

Bazemore faces his teammate Gary Scelzi in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
