BAZEMORE EXPECTS CHALLENGES AT MOPAR MILE-HIGH NATIONALS

MORRISON, Colo. (July 14, 2004) - Whit Bazemore has enjoyed impressive results at Bandimere Speedway in his 15-year NHRA Funny Car career, including two wins (1997 and 2000), a runner-up finish in 1999 and four No.1 qualifiers ('97, '98, '00 and '01).

The driver of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus who has scored two Funny Car wins this season and produced the quickest and fastest pass in NHRA Funny Car history, a 333.25-mph run at a national elapsed-time recordof 4.713 seconds at Route 66 Raceway, expects new challenges at thisweekend's Mopar Mile-High Nationals following recent rules changes.

"The situation going into Denver is a little different now than normal because of the new rules that have been implemented by NHRA," said theIndianapolis resident and two-time U.S. Nationals champion who is third inFunny Car points. " We're going to have a different tire supplied byGoodyear that we're mandated to run. So there's a little bit of a question mark as to how that tire's going to react and what we're going to have to do to make the car competitive.

"The good thing is that everybody is in the same situation," he added. "It may take a run or two before we get a handle on it. Sometimes in those situations it's a crapshoot and you can get lucky and some people figure it out before others. Hopefully with the tremendous Matco Tools team that we're a part of we'll be one of the cars to have a handle on it sooner rather than later."

Bazemore, who takes advantage of the start of the Western Swing each year by following his passion and cycling through the hills surrounding Bandimere  Speedway when he has the chance, calls Bandimere one of his favorite racetracks. "We've always liked this track," he said. "Bandimere is one of the top facilities and the fans are tremendous. Friday night qualifying at Bandimere is definitely one of the highlights of the year. It has a great atmosphere and a huge number of fans that come out. We like the facility, we like the town.

"It's a hard race, however, but we've been fortunate that we've done well here," he commented. "It's extremely challenging running at altitude. It's a race at which you have to compromise and your tune-up is so different than normal that it rewards the team that can adapt to new situations quickly.

"Lee (Beard, crew chief - a Pueblo, Colo., native) has a good tune-up for the track and it would be nice to do well here with this Matco Tools Dodgeteam at a Mopar-sponsored event."

Kurt Johnson Focuses on Delivering in Denver
ACDelco crew set to conquer the mountain at the Mile-High Nationals

Sugar Hill, Ga., July 12, 2004 - The POWERade Drag Racing Series will kick off the second half of the 2004 season this weekend with the running of the Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO.  This race will also mark the beginning of the NHRA's traditional "West Coast Swing", an annual three-race stretch where the straight-line set will compete on consecutive weekends at locations quite distant from each other.

Starting at Bandimere Speedway, the racers will travel to Seattle, WA before completing the triangle in Sonoma, CA.   It is a challenging stretch, pushing competitors to the limit.  As such, many view this as a crucial point in the chase for the championship.  Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing team, however, see this race as simply another opportunity for success. Therefore, they will employ the same approach for this weekend that they have used all season.

"We attack every race with the same attitude, namely that we are going there to win," explained Johnson.  "It doesn't really matter if it's the first of three in a row or the last of ten.  The scenery may change, but the points and the payout are the same, and, as always, we're looking to end the day with the ACDelco Cavalier in the winner's circle."

Although the Johnson crew's philosophy in preparing for this race may remain the same, the way they set their race car up to handle Bandimere Speedway will be drastically different.  The primary obstacle will be compensating for the thin air, which will rob the Pro Stock cars' carbureted engines of over 200 horsepower, which is roughly 20% of their output at sea level.  It is a multi-faceted task, requiring changes to virtually every aspect of the race car.

"You have to get the set-up to the point that your car will put the numbers on the board," detailed Johnson.  "That involves getting the engine and the gearing right, making the car happy.  This year, we also have the addition of the new tire and wheel combination that we'll have to get used to, but it will be same for everyone.

"For some reason, certain people get overly concerned about racing in Denver.  Throughout my career, however, I have chosen to attack the track, testing and trying ideas and components throughout qualifying and race day, which is the only time you really learn something. It's an approach that's worked well for us."

A review of Johnson's record in the Rockies shows the efficacy of his plan.  In eleven previous visits to the Colorado quarter-mile, the second-generation racer has scored two wins in four final round appearances, with an overall .710 elimination round win record, one of several factors bolstering the team's confidence heading into the race.

"We're pretty optimistic about our chances this weekend, based on how we ran here a year ago, as well as Dad's (Six-time champion Warren Johnson) performance in testing," said Johnson.  "He was near the top of the charts throughout the session, running consistently in the teens.

"We'll go over his notes, see what he did, what adjustments he made and how well they worked.  We'll combine that with our own tuning notes from the past to come up with a game plan that we will use for our ACDelco Cavalier.  In the two weeks since our last race, we've been working around the clock, focusing on making ourselves better, so we're looking for good things to happen this weekend in Denver."

Facts on Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing Team entering the Mile-High Nationals:
* Kurt knows the way to the top of the mountain: This will be Kurt's 12th appearance at Bandimere Speedway, where he has two wins (in 1995 & 2000) in four final round appearances and one No. 1 qualifying performance in 2000.
* One year ago:  Kurt qualified second with an elapsed time of 7.227 seconds and a top speed of 190.51 mph, and advanced to the quarter-finals.
* Winning percentage: Kurt's .646 elimination round winning percentage (370-203) ranks 10th among all active NHRA professional drivers.
* National event wins: Kurt's 28 national event victories ties him for 14th on the all-time NHRA professional win list, and tie him for fourth on the all-time Pro Stock win list.  Kurt's most recent win came at this year's Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals in Phoenix, AZ.
* Career best elapsed time:  6.716 seconds, Englishtown, NJ. 2003
* Career best top speed: 206.61 mph, Englishtown, NJ. 2003

Warren Johnson Returns to His Roots to Race in Denver
GM Performance Parts driver calls on racing experience from 30 years ago to prepare fordefense of  Mile-High Nationals title

SUGAR HILL, GA., July 12, 2004 - After a two-week break, the POWERade Drag Racing Series returns to action this weekend with the Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO.  Bandimere Speedway, site of this event, is arguably the most picturesque facility on the NHRA tour, nestled in the side of the Rocky Mountains overlooking the Mile-High City.  However, with its location at an altitude of over 5,000 feet, the scenery is not the only aspect of this track that is breath taking.

The thin air is of particular concern to the Pro Stock contingent, whose naturally aspirated engines are throttled by the paucity of power-producing oxygen, sending most teams scrambling to find ways to compensate for the lack of power.  However, for GM Performance Parts pilot Warren Johnson, these unique conditions simply represent a return to his racing roots.

"Racing in the altitude at Bandimere Speedway presents a challenge unlike any other on the circuit," explained Johnson. "However, being from the Midwest, I grew up racing in divisional events in the 70's at tracks in Pueblo, Continental Divide as well as Denver, so I spent quite a bit of time racing at altitude.  I'd say I've made more passes under those conditions than anyone currently in Pro Stock.

"Even though the cars today are radically different from what we raced back then, the experience gave me an understanding of what you have to do to change the car from a normal elevation set-up to what you run in the thin air, which still proves useful as we prepare our GM Performance Parts Grand Am to race this weekend.

"Basically, we're down 250 horsepower from our normal race conditions.   That means you have to backtrack the set-up, including the chassis configuration, four-link settings, gear ratios and weight distribution, to what we would have run at other tracks in 1991.

"With four wins (including his charge from the ninth position a year ago) in nine final round appearances, "The Professor's" record on the mountain speaks for itself.  Therefore, one would assume that his many years of experience and volumes of tuning data would have him in good stead for this weekend's race.  Even so, Johnson was still among the many racers participating in last week's pre-race test session, gathering valuable information while consistently ticking off passes under the current track record.  The results from those trial runs have the entire team looking forward to defending their title.

"We're pretty enthused by our test session in Denver, as we established a level of competitive consistency," said Johnson.  "We made some physical changes to our GM Performance Parts Grand Am, and it ran straighter than it has in a year, with elapsed times in the teens.  Naturally, the track will be a little different for the race this weekend, as the NHRA surface preparation is slightly different than what we had for testing, but if it's anywhere close to what it was, we should be in pretty good shape."

WJ's Comments:On the GM PP team's activities over the last two weeks -"Since our last race in Madison, we have been trying to get caught up in our developmental work.  We've been working on both the DRCE 3s which I use in my car, as well as the DRCE 2s that Kurt has in his ACDelco Cavalier, trying to not only keep them race ready, but to also find some extra horsepower.  We don't have a large crew back at the shop when we're racing, so we have to maximize whatever time we get in Sugar Hill."

Facts on Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Racing Team entering The Mile-High Nationals Nationals:
* WJ is the Boss at Bandimere: This will be Warren's 21st NHRA Pro Stock national event appearance in Denver, where he has four wins (the most by any active Pro Stock driver) in nine final round appearances, and a 46-16 elimination round record for a .742 win percentage.
* Warren's Qualifying Stats in Colorado: In his twenty previous starts at Bandimere Speedway, WJ has four No. 1 qualifying positions, with an average starting position of 3.7, and only three starts outside the top half.
* One year ago - Defending Champion: WJ qualified ninth with an elapsed time of 7.265 seconds with a top speed of 190.67 mph, and defeated George Marnell, Greg Anderson, Mike Edwards and Jeg Coughlin en route to his third win of the season and 91st of his stellar career.
* Winning Streak: Warren Johnson is looking to extend a streak where has won at least one race a year for 22 consecutive years, which is the longest in NHRA history.
* No. 1 in National event wins: WJ's 92 national event victories are the most ever in the history of the Pro Stock division and place him second on the all-time NHRA win list.  His most recent win came last year at the Lucas Oil Nationals in Reading, PA.
* Career best elapsed time:  6.715 seconds, Englishtown 2003
* Career best top speed:  205.69 mph, Englishtown 2003

YOUNG, ALLEN, MARCUM AND LEE WIN A "WALLY" IN NATIONAL DRAGSTER CHALLENGE RACE AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY
by Tim Glover

Photos

(Commerce, GA -July 10) In addition to racing for Summit points, racers in
all the "big car" classes had an added incentive to win during tonight's
National Dragster Challenge race. Each class winner received an NHRA
""Wally"" (a special trophy awarded by NHRA to National Dragster Challenge
event winners). In addition to the National Dragster Challenge, the three
remaining classes from the Ingles / Powerade Night of Fire race were
completed.

Earlier in the day, during time trials, Super Pro racer Jesse Young's day
was not going quite as planned. The rear end housing on his Danielsville,
GA based dragster gave up, rendering his car useless. He then asked Joe
Rampley if he could borrow Rampley's second car, which was still at home in
Gainesville. After a moment, Rampley, who is not in the Summit Points
chase, told Young to go ahead and use his 2000 Undercover dragster, which
was already at the track. Young, who had never even sat in Rampley's
dragster before, took to it easily, and ended up facing former track
champion Mike Ramsey's Commerce, GA based '81 Don Ness Camaro in the final.
Both drivers actually red lighted, Ramsey with a .497 and Young with a .477,
but fortunately for Young, Ramsey had the slower dial in time of 5.67
seconds, making his the first infraction. Ramsey went on to a 5.69,
121.31mph pass, while Young got the win light and the "Wally" with a 5.01,
137.53mph effort (5.04 dial). Young, who has already won a "Wally",
presented it to Rampley in appreciation for his help. Kim Ellington's
husband, Eric, earned his way to a semi-final finish in the slightly
modified '65 Chevrolet C10 pickup his father bought new, along with Billy
Thigpen, the top 2004 Summit points earner in Super Pro ('97 Undercover
dragster - Flowery Branch, GA).

Sportsman winner Greg Allen brought his daughter Chelsea along today, and
earned a "Wally" for winning his second race of the year with his Anderson,
SC based '80 Camaro. Allen met veteran racer Dickey Forrester from Hickory
Flat, and used a telepathic .516 second react to get the win, running a
brake tapping 10.70, 119.30mph pass (10.68 dial) to Forrester's 10.62,
124.90mph effort in his '68 Firebird (10.59 target). Allen pointed out that
his last name is part of the event, (chALLENge). He then mentioned that he
wasn't even supposed to come today. He thanked his wife Shannon and son
Grayson for letting him come out to race on what was supposed to be
Shannon's day out. Allen also moved into second place in the Sportsman
points. Joe Haddon ('67 Chevy II - Oxford, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

"I was just lucky," said Bogart, GA racer Steve Marcum about his first 2004
Trophy Street win and first ever "Wally" win. Marcum had made it to the
rain delayed Night of Fire semi-finals earlier in the day with his '01
Mustang, and went on to win the big one against Jimmy Mason from Canon, GA.
Marcum took a holeshot advantage at the starting line and turned it into a
win with a 14.71, 92.30mph pass (14.69 dial). Mason's '94 Firebird broke
out trying to catch Marcum with a 14.25, 97.67mph effort (14.30 dial).
Marcum said he finished runner up in the 2003 King of the Track race, and
when thinking about the "Wally" earlier today he told himself, "It's mine!"
2003 Trophy Street champion Mel Abney ('67 Camaro - Cumming, GA) was the
semi-final finisher.

A new player entered the ranks of the Sport Compact racers at Atlanta
Dragway. Jodee Lee, raced for a while in Trophy Street and was 2002 Rookie
of the Year. For this race, she borrowed a 2000 Malibu from friend Brandy
Edmonds, and became the first female winner of Sport Compact at Atlanta
Dragway. Lee faced Terry Turpin from Maysville, GA in the final, and turned
on the win light against the fastest Sport Compact competitor with a 16.89,
79.16mph pass (16.85 dial). Turpin's machine fell off the pace to 13.37,
103.64mph (13.10 dial). Points leader Eric "Buford" Duncan ('97 Cavalier -
Homer, GA) was the semi-final finisher.

Twelve year old "Mad Matt" Gillen of Gainesville, GA continued his comeback
in 8-12 Jr. Dragster with a defeat of Team PTI racer Justin Fancher (10 -
Conyers, GA). Gillen's reacts were in the fives all day, and the car was on
a rail, starting the day with an 8.944 pass and finishing with an 8.958,
72.50mph effort (8.93 dial). Fancher's machine was spot on, 9.27, 69.14mph
(9.26 dial), but Gillen's .525 react was too much to overcome. "I think
he's back to his old self. God blessed us with a wonderful day," said
Gillen's dad, Bill. Matt added that his thoughts and prayers were for the
health of fellow competitor and current points leader Joshua Sisson's dad,
Barry. Bailey Denton (10 - McDonough, GA) earned the semi-final trophy.

Bailey Denton's older brother, "Wild Kyle" Denton (14 - McDonough, GA) was
still tired after arriving home Friday from a trip to Panama City. That
didn't stop him from enjoying a rematch from a month ago against Team PTI
racer Lauren Turner. The results were the same as the June 12 race, with
Denton taking the win. Turner actually had a phenomenal reaction time of
.513 seconds to Denton's .542, but she crossed the finish line .018 seconds
too soon, breaking out with an 8.302, 77.11mph effort (8.32 dial). Denton
was close, running 7.99, 79.35mph on his 7.98 dial. "I couldn't tell if I
was past her," added Denton. Team PTI racer Johnny Turner (15 -
Pendergrass, GA) and Danielle Krause (13 - Peachtree City, GA) were the
semi-final trophy winners.

Six cars remained in Trophy Street competition when the Night of Fire race
was called on June 26. Mike Newby from Marietta, GA has been in three 2004
Trophy Street finals prior to this event, and won the Night of Fire trophy
after defeating Athens, GA racer Clay Stancil, another multi time finalist.
Newby had the best final round reaction time of the entire day with a .504,
and although his show quality '69 Chevelle broke out with a 14.399, 93.80mph
pass (14.40 dial), Stancil's not so show quality '71 Chevelle broke out even
more with a 14.09, 93.97mph effort on a 14.17 second dial. Newby said he
thought he was doing well for the season. Steve Marcum ('01 Mustang -
Bogart, GA) was the semi-final trophy winner.

Young Harvey Snelgrove (12 - Dahlonega, GA) won the 8-12 year old Jr.
Dragster Night of Fire trophy after defeating current points leader Joshua
Sisson (10 - Gainesville, GA) with a close 9.62, 63.79mph pass (9.60 dial).
Sisson actually crossed the finish line first, but broke out with an 8.97,
72.34 mph pass (8.98 dial). Kelsey Lynn (10 - Marietta, GA) and Justin
Fancher (10 - Conyers, GA) took home semi-final trophies for their efforts.

Sixteen year old Alton Clements III moved up from Jr. Dragster class to a
Super Pro Camaro for the 2004 season, but a broken engine had him sidelined.
Rather than sit out the Night of Fire, he and his family chose to race
their Jr. Dragster again. However, as soon as they ran the car, the motor
broke. After a quick ten minute thrash installing an engine they borrowed
from Bill Gillen, Clements was back on track, and went on to win the special
Night of Fire trophy for the 13-17 year old Jr. Dragster class. "Thank God
for Bill Gillen and his motor magic," exclaimed Clements. He then added
that every time they have borrowed something from Gillen they went on to win
the race, including his first ever Jr. Dragster race where he borrowed an
entire car from Gillen. Clements defeated Team PTI racer Johnny Turner in
the final with a Super Pro style react, .510 seconds. He then pedaled the
car to an 8.43, 72.48mph pass (8.35 dial). Turner broke out with an 8.74,
72.53mph (8.77 dial). Bradley Myers (15 - Loganville, GA) and Kyle Denton
(14 - McDonough, GA) won the semi-final trophy.

TWO SHARE YEAR ONE POWER HOUR AWARDS; SMALLWOOD WINS HAYES SPORT COMPACT CHALLENGE

BANKS CROSSING, GA Two street-legal racers took home Power Hour awards
during the Year One Fast Friday program on July 9. On a sultry summer
evening, Peter Heu of Commerce ran a "Fastest Pass" of 135.84 MPH in his
deceptively speedy 1992 Honda Civic, along with a "Quickest ET" of 10.838
seconds in the quarter-mile, to take home both Year One $50 Gift Certificate
Vouchers. Sugar Hill driver Henry Gosnell earned the third $50 voucher for
a nearly-perfect "Best Reaction Time" (.502 seconds) during the 9-10 PM
competition for strictly street-legal cars and pickup trucks.

In other action, Shane Smallwood of Flowery Branch defeated Hayes Sport
Compact Challenge points leader Terry Turpin in the "Fast Four" final
elimination, picking up the maximum three points and champion's trophy for
the evening's contest, part of a ten-race series during Year One Fast Friday
events through August 20.

The next Year One Fast Friday program is scheduled for Friday, July 16, and
will feature another round of the Hayes Sport Compact Challenge in addition
to the Year One Power Hour. Gates will open at 6:00 PM for both racers and
spectators, with racing action beginning at 6:45 and the Hayes Sport Compact
Challenge starting at 11 PM.

Sponsored by Year One Automotive Restoration in Braselton, along with the
Hayes Family Dealerships in Lawrenceville, Gainesville and Cornelia, Atlanta
Dragway's Fast Friday show is primarily an opportunity for drivers of
street-legal vehicles to "race the strip, not the street." Racecars and

G Squared Motorsports Opts to Skip Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals

AMERICUS, GA. (July 9, 2004) - After experiencing the affect of the 40-pound weight addition imposed on the V-Twins at the Sears Craftsman Nationals, George Bryce and George Smith of G Squared Motorsports announced today that they will not be attending the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver, CO.

“It’s obvious that the 40-pounds have had a greater impact than we initially thought the weight would have and we need additional time to prepare as a result of the change,” said Smith. “Prior to George Bryce and I forming G Squared Motorsports, he and Jackie (Bryce) had a remarkable track record over the last 188 consecutive NHRA national event entries with 61 No. 1 qualifiers, 110 final rounds and 67 wins. The reason that the record is so good is Star Racing was more prepared than anyone else to win. We know we have an outstanding package with the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell and the S&S V-Twin engine has shown great durability and has tremendous potential. I’m not used to losing and neither is George Bryce, and it’s our intent to continue the winning tradition at G Squared.”

Bryce continued by saying, "Big George said it all. New projects take time to fully develop. We are committed to succeeding with this V-Twin. When we finally decided to unveil this new machine, we felt we would be competitive with it, and we are. As Big George said, the extra weight has had a significant impact, and we are continuing to work with the S&S team to maximize the performance of the Pro Stock bike. Upon returning to competition, we will help the class grow as we have several new racers interested in participating in the NHRA POWERade series.”

The two George’s are in Viola, WI this weekend meeting with the S&S Cycle R&D Department to discuss options. They will also be present at the Hot Bike S&S 124 VFI Ultimate Challenge Shootout at the Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa, with the 2003 #46 Tribute Street Pro bike doing exhibition runs.
