WJ Blasts to No. 1 Position in Houston

Day/Date: Friday, April 8, 2005
Location: Houston Raceway Park, Baytown, TX

Warren Johnson continued his run of strong performances, as he rocketed to the No. 1 position during the first day of qualifying at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Baytown, TX. After opening with a solid 6.767-second pass on his first attempt, the GM Performance Parts Grand Am came back in the evening session to blast down the Houston Raceway Park quarter-mile in 6.707-seconds with a top speed of 205.10 mph to sit atop the Pro Stock field.

"It rattled the tires pretty hard tonight in second gear, but after that, our GM Performance Parts Grand Am ran pretty well. We've been working with a new clutch combination, and this was one of the few times we've leaned on it. Without shaking the tires, it might have run a 6.68 or 6.69, but we're certainly happy with where we are.

"Naturally being No. 1 only truly counts tomorrow night, but this is a great place to start the weekend off. Now we have to look at our notes and see if we can improve our performance, because our competitors are doing the same thing, and there are a lot of good cars up there that can step up. We got down the racetrack twice today and learned something. Tomorrow we'll see if we’re smart enough to apply it!"

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 6, 2005) – Chip Ellis, aboard the G Squared/S&S Buell, heads to Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas for the 18th running of the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals.

At the season-opening Mac Tools Gatornationals three weeks ago in Gainesville, Fla., G Squared Motorsports experienced some uncharacteristic mechanical problems throughout the weekend and Ellis fell victim to a red-light start in the opening round of eliminations. But other than using the outing as a learning experience the team is not looking back.

"What happened in Gainesville stays in Gainesville," said Ellis, as he looked forward to this weekend's event. "While we don’t want or look for a repeat of the team's problems and my problems, we feel that we can stay on the same program we established for that race here at Houston.

"We tested between the two races and my crew chief Ken Johnson has got this bike straightened out. We're going to be ready for them at Houston."

G Squared team owners George Smith and George Bryce echoed the same philosophy.

Smith said, "The weekend (at Gainesville) was one of those weekends when stuff happens and now we look forward and just focus and prepare for Houston. I'm pleased with the progress we made at Gainesville Raceway. We have a good package and now we just need to put it together to get this G Squared S&S Buell down the track every round."

"At Gainesville we found out where we were as far as work required to make the motorcycle fast and reliable," reflected Bryce. "We used the time between races to test and uncovered and corrected some little gremlins that should make us a better bike at Houston. Chip feels a lot more confident going into Houston and the team as a whole feels more prepared."

SCHEDULE: With Smith, Bryce and Ken Johnson calling the tuning shots, qualifying for Ellis and the G Squared S&S Buell begins with two sessions on Friday, scheduled for 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., and concludes with two additional sessions on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Ellis begins his quest for the Pro Stock Bike title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Houston time (CT) and subject to change at anytime.

TV: Qualifying highlights for the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday evening (Apr. 9) from 7-9 p.m. (repeats: early Sunday morning, Apr. 10 from 3-5 a.m.). ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 7 until 10 p.m. on Sunday evening (Apr. 10). The elimination show repeats on ESPN2 on Wed., Apr. 13 from 3-5 a.m. Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to change at anytime. Check local listings.

2003 National Hot Rod Reunion Photo CD Now Available

I've decided to produce a CD of photos that I shot at the first National Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY (2003). The CD contains 361 different unedited full-size photos that were taken with a 3.2 megapixel digital camera (2048 x 1536 photo size). You can print out nice 8 x 10s from this size image.

The CD contains a variety of photos taken trackside, in the pits and during other activities. Most of the photos are of drag racing cars ( or drag racing personalities) with a few street rods thrown in. Front engine dragsters, funny cars, altereds, gassers, super stocks, etc. - even a couple of nice Arnie Beswick action shots. You can see examples of some of the photos that are included on the CD here. Not all of the photos are included, but many of the ones labeled David Dilbeck Photo are. Again, the photos on the disc are unedited and full size - not the edited, labeled and reduced image size photos that are shown in the online album.

I'm selling the photo CD for $20, which includes mailing fees to the continental United States (first class). If you're interested, contact me at dayfalcon@earthlink.net for additional information. Thanks, David.

1. WJ's First Houston Race - 1988
Race Car: 1988 ACDelco Oldsmobile Cutlass
Performance: WJ Qualified Second, 7.282 seconds, 189.91 mph
Defeated Morris Johnson Jr., Joe Lepone and Tony Christian
Lost to Bob Glidden

In Warren's Words:
"We were only five thousandths off of Glidden's performance, so we must have been pretty competitive. We obviously had to be pleased making it to the final with a new car, and, even though we didn't win, it was a step in the right direction.

"If I recall correctly, the track was new, but still fairly bumpy, simply because it was built on a swamp. At the time, they had yet to install adequate drainage, so about three or four o'clock in the afternoon, you could actually have little water geysers spurting out of pores in the track. It was a bizarre sight to say the least.

"When they repaved it a few years later, they did it right, putting a layer of rock, a layer of petromat and a layer of asphalt, followed by another layer of petromat, topped off by asphalt. Since then, other than an occasional bump, it's been pretty decent."

Notes of the time:
- This was the 30th final round appearance of WJ's career.
- This marked the sixth time in his career that Warren had advanced to the final round in his first race at a particular track. (The others were Gainesville, FL, Fremont and Irvine, CA, Reading, PA and Dallas, TX.)
- WJ drove a Cutlass in this race, but had actually started the year in an Olds Ciera GT. Ironically, his opponent in the final, Bob Glidden, was also driving a new car, with his Probe replacing the Thunderbird he had campaigned prior to that race.
- The field consisted of an Oldsmobile Cutlass and Ciera, Pontiac Trans Ams, Chevy Berettas and Camaros, a Dodge Avenger and Glidden’s Ford Probe.
- The field was the quickest in Pro Stock history, starting with Glidden's national record 7.277-seconds and ending with Frank Iaconio's 7.374-second run, breaking the mark set in Reading, PA only three weeks before.

2. WJ's First Houston Win - 1990
Race Car: 1990 ACDelco Oldsmobile Cutlass
Performance: WJ Qualified Second, 7.234 seconds, 189.67 mph
Defeated Steve Schmidt, Gordie Rivera, Kenny Delco and Bruce Allen

In Warren's Words:
"It takes a minimum of one round of good luck to win a race, and that day, we were fortunate enough to have two, with both Rivera and Delco red-lighting. Although I don't have any specific recollections from our winning that weekend, for some reason, I do remember Pawuk setting the record. However, we were fortunate to also have a very fast and consistent race car that weekend, and we came away with the win."

Notes of the time:

- This win was the 21st of Warren's Pro Stock career, and came in only his second Houston Raceway Park final round appearance.
- No. 1 qualifier Mark Pawuk, who had edged WJ for the top spot with a national-record e.t. of 7.220 seconds, was upset on a holeshot by veteran Rickie Smith in the first round. Darrell Gwynn, who had reset the Top Fuel record in qualifying with a 4.90-second, was also eliminated in the opening round.
- With his 7.234-second run in qualifying and 7.241-second pass in eliminations, WJ recorded two of the three quickest runs in Pro Stock history, trailing only Pawuk's 7.22.
- Johnson's performance advantage played a significant role on Sunday, as both Gordie Rivera and Kenny Delco left the starting line early, giving the automatic win to "The Professor".
- The field consisted of Olds Cutlasses, Chevy Berettas, Pontiac Grand Prix and Trans Ams and a Dodge Daytona, a Buick Regal (driven by current Barry Grant crew chief Buddy Ingersoll) and Bob Glidden's Ford Probe.
- Current Pro Stock regulars also competing that weekend included Bruce Allen, Mark Pawuk, Jerry Haas, Larry Morgan, Kenny Koretsky and Jim Yates.
- Other winners that weekend were current Larry Dixon crew chief Dick LaHaie, who beat Gene Snow in the Top Fuel final, and John Force over Bruce Larson in Funny Car for the sixth win of his career.

3. "The Grandfather of All Staging Duels" – 1994

In 1994, defending Pro Stock champion WJ, behind the wheel of the GM Performance Parts Olds Cutlass, was involved in a bitter championship fight with the "Dodge Boys", Darrell Alderman and Scott Geoffrion, with each time these three would meet on the race track turning into a war. Never was this more evident than in the final round of the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Having already eliminated Alderman in the semi-finals, WJ squared off against Geoffrion (who ironically drove for Johnson in 1991) for the win. In what has become one of the most talked-about staging battles in the category's history, neither driver would stage first, sitting at the line idling until they were sent to the "penalty box" by then NHRA starter Buster Couch. When they returned to the line, WJ was able to defeat Geoffrion for his second win at HRP, 7.071 to 7.101.

In Warren’s Words:
"I believe that still stands as the best staging duel ever. Wayne County (who campaigned the Dodge entries at the time) had a book on every driver in the category listing whether they staged first or not. I plainly told Geoffrion that there was no way I would stage first.

"I went up there with the engine dead cold, knowing I was not going to stage first. In fact, we had ice in the motor to keep it cool, knowing we would be there a while. After the burnout, the engine temperature still wasn’t above 90 degrees. I don't remember who pre-staged first, but I went into pre-stage and we both just sat there until Buster got excited and put us in the penalty box, making us wait until everyone else ran.

"After all the other cars had run, they pulled us back up without giving us time to cool the motors down. I waited long enough staging that there was steam coming out of the Dodge, and I believe he blew the head gaskets out of it, and we won. I guess you could say our plan worked."

4. WJ's Most Recent Houston Win - 2001
Race Car: 2001 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Grand Am
Performance: WJ Qualified Second, 6.845 seconds, 201.37 mph
Defeated Greg Anderson, Jim Yates, Bruce Allen and Mark Pawuk

In Warren's Words:

"For some reason, the line-lock didn't work, and I darn near red-lighted in the final. If I remember right, Pawuk always had to stage last, because if he went in first, he typically was late off the line. Therefore, I made a pre-meditated decision to somehow have him stage first no matter what.

"I think the line lock broke when I tried to stage, because the brake pressure gauge did not move. I knew I was in trouble, and had to stage last because if I sat there without a line lock, I could have just as easily rolled backwards out of the lights as I could forwards, resulting in an automatic loss in either case. Fortunately, he went in first, and we just got by with one."

Notes of the time:

- This win was the 83rd of WJ's career, as he closed in on Bob Glidden's mark of 85 national event victories, which he would surpass in Denver later that year.
- This was Warren's fifth win in six final round appearances at Houston Raceway Park, and second consecutive win there.
- This was also the 131st national event final round of WJ's career.
- This was also WJ's third win in his last five races, dating back to his 2000 win at the fall Houston race.
- WJ's 6.830-second pass in his first round elimination of Greg Anderson set low elapsed time for the event.
- With his line-lock failing in the final, WJ knew his only chance of winning rested on Mark Pawuk’s staging first, which he did. After that, WJ rolled in and posted a lightning-fast .411 reaction time to leave on Pawuk by over five hundredths of a second and never looked back, riding a 6.844 sec., 200.98 mph pass to victory.
- The Pro Stock line-up included Pontiac Grand Ams and a single Firebird, Chevrolet Cavaliers, Darrell Alderman-s solitary Dodge R/T, and a Ford Mustang piloted by Robert Patrick.
- Other winners that weekend included current ESPN TV analyst Mike Dunn, who eliminated Larry Dixon in the final, and Del Worsham, who edged John Force in the Funny Car final.

5. WJ's Houston Raceway Park in a Nutshell –

"If we get any sort of a break in the weather, we could see some very quick times. Of course, I've been there when it’s been 100 degrees, and I've been there when we had an ice storm that postponed the race.

"Otherwise, the atmospheric conditions in Houston are quite similar to what we faced in Gainesville. It's so close to the Gulf, Barry Bonds could hit a home run into it from the race track. Even though the track was basically built on a swamp, they do a good job of maintaining it, so the racing surface is usually pretty good, other than an occasional bump here and there.

"The only thing that we're not particularly fond of is the Friday night qualifying session, simply because it gets so cold that dew forms on the track and fogs up the windshield. The air may be great, but the racing surface just doesn't hold the performance under those conditions.

"Overall, it's not a bad facility, and we usually get a good crowd, so we enjoy racing there."

GM Performance Parts Team optimistic about chances at O'Reilly Spring Nationals

Sugar Hill, Ga., April 4, 2005 - Through the first three races of the 2005 POWERade Drag Racing season, things have gone pretty close to the way Warren Johnson and his GM Performance Parts Grand Am Racing team have planned. Despite starting the year with a completely new race car and engine combination, Johnson and his veteran crew have established new career bests in elapsed time and top speed, been in contention for the win at every race, and reached the final round at the season-opener in Pomona, CA.

Sitting second in the championship standings entering this weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, TX, Johnson is optimistic about his chances to continue this positive trend.

"At the beginning the season, before we even got on the track, I saw where we were headed in terms of power and reliability," said Johnson. "When asked about my outlook for the upcoming year, I predicted that either Kurt (son, and driver of the ACDelco Cavalier) or I should win the championship.

"Having completed the first three races, I still firmly believe that. Quite obviously, we've already had the potential to win a few races, and if we're able to pick up the pace a little more, that will only improve our chances. I'm confident that we will both win our share. Of course, it's up to us to get the job done."

Bolstering the Johnson team's positive stance heading to Houston Raceway Park is the still-untapped potential of their raceday combination. Even after three races, their experience with the total package remains relatively limited as their focus between events has remained on the development of the DRCE III powerplant. Therefore, the knowledge gained from each pass down the racetrack should only help to extract additional performance.

"To this point in the season, we only have a total of 20 runs on our GM Performance Parts Grand Am, which under normal circumstances, is just a good day of testing for this team," quipped Johnson. "We're confident that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. For example, even though we ran that 6.67 in the semi-finals at Gainesville, which was during the hottest part of the day, we still feel as if we left a little on the table. The car left well, and had good incremental times, but it moved around more than we would have liked, so that is one area we will work on.

"Since returning from Florida, we've concentrated on our engine program, assembling additional pieces to help through the back-to-back races ahead. Of course, we didn't want to build spares until we knew what we had was at least in the ball park. Having determined that we're competitive, we can now start building and fine-tuning.

"However, we have a test session planned before we head to Houston. So far, we've basically been tuning this car at the race track, and it has responded favorably. But we now have a laundry list of items we'd like to try without the pressure of a national event to confirm a few things while also exploring new directions. It's all part of putting ourselves in the best position possible to win races, starting this weekend."

Another 2005 development that receives "The Professor's" approval is the return to parity among the "factory hot rods". Having been an active and contributing participant in the Pro Stock division virtually since its inception, Johnson knows its appeal to the fans lies in razor-close competition, with virtually any car in the field having a realistic chance of reaching the winner's circle. With different winners in each of the first three races, and fields qualifying closer than ever, Johnson is optimistic about the future.

"In reality, we have about ten cars in the category that have a legitimate shot at winning races, which is great for the health of the category," said Johnson. "After all, we are here to put on a good show for the fans, and if you can predict the winner, that's not very entertaining. Now we're in a situation, once again, where anyone can win. Fortunately, both my GM Performance Parts Grand Am and Kurt's ACDelco Cavalier can be counted among the contenders. If the early results are any indication, it promises to be a very interesting year in Pro Stock, and we plan to do our share to make it so."

Notes on Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Grand Am racing team entering the O'Reilly Spring Nationals:

WJ is a Winner at Houston Raceway Park: This will be Warren's 22nd appearance at Houston Raceway Park. In his 21 previous starts, he has five wins in six final round appearances, which is second only to John Force's seven wins for the most among all professional categories. In addition, WJ has a 35-16 elimination round record at HRP for a .686 win percentage.

Warren Starts Up Front in Houston: In 21 previous races at HRP, Warren has eight No. 1 qualifying performances, only one start outside the top half of the field and a 2.76 average starting position.

One year ago: Warren qualified third with an elapsed time of 6.737 seconds and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Most recent HRP win: 2001, when he qualified second and defeated Greg Anderson, Jim Yates, Bruce Allen and Mark Pawuk en route to the 83rd win of his career.

ACDelco Team Aims for Third HRP Win at O'Reilly Spring Nationals

Sugar Hill, Ga., April 4, 2005 - In the first three races of the 2005 NHRA season, Kurt Johnson and his team have had a handle on the larger aspects of their racing operation. The DRCE III V-8 engine under the hood of their ACDelco Cavalier has produced plenty of horsepower, the car has been making good, straight runs, and Johnson has done a good job of driving. As a result, they have qualified in the top five at every race, and established career bests in elapsed time and top speed.

However, a series of smaller issues have so far combined to keep the blue, white and red crew out of the winner's circle, a situation that Johnson looks to rectify this weekend at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston, TX.

"The good news is that our ACDelco Cavalier has been competitive in the first three races," stated Johnson. "The bad news is that for one reason or another we have yet to translate that into success on race day. Therefore, we've been working to straighten out several areas on our race car to improve our performance even further.

"For example, we need to make our clutch package perform more consistently. In addition, we had a problem with a shock in Gainesville where a small piece of rubber got stuck underneath a check valve. We felt as though we could have won all three races, but for one reason or another, it didn't happen. We need to have the total package, so we're going to test the week before the race and have everything ready by the time we arrive in Texas."

Despite the trials and tribulations, this close-knit team has kept matters in perspective, and comes to Baytown with a good outlook. Adding to their positive perspective is their record of success at Houston Raceway Park, site of this weekend's race.

"When you qualify as well as we have, you expect to at least reach the semi-finals," detailed Johnson. "We're certainly not happy with early exits, but we recognize that it's a part of racing, and the cycle will swing back around in our favor. Therefore, instead of focusing on the negative, we simply put it behind us and concentrate on getting the job done at the next race.

"Fortunately, this weekend we're racing on a track where we've experienced some success in the past. With the right conditions, Houston Raceway Park can be extremely fast. The starting line is pretty good, and since they run the Pro Stock Super Bowl there, they obviously know how to groom the track for a Pro Stock car.

"But, as always, it starts with Mother Nature. If it's cool and dry, the potential is there for some very quick times. We'll just have to see what greets us when we pull in to the track, and adjust our ACDelco Cavalier accordingly. We've won there before, and have a good notebook to work from, so we're pretty confident heading into Houston."

Notes on Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Cavalier Racing team entering
The O'Reilly Spring Nationals:

KJ Knows How to Win in Baytown: This will be KJ's 17th appearance at Houston Raceway Park. In his 16 previous starts, he has two wins in 1999 & 2003 in three final round appearances and a 24-14 elimination round record for a .632 win percentage.

Kurt Starts Up Front at HRP: In his 16 prior starts in Baytown, Kurt has been the No. 1 qualifier twice at the 1998 and 2000 fall races. In addition, he has only three starts outside the top half of the field and an average starting position of 5.06.

One year ago: Kurt qualified fifth with an elapsed time of 6.749 seconds and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Most recent Houston win: 2003, when he qualified second and defeated Terry Adams, Ron Krisher, Jim Yates and Scott Geoffrion en route to the 25th win of his career.

FUNNY CAR POINTS LEADER BAZEMORE HEADING BACK TO EARTH

Courtesy Judy Stropus
DON SCHUMACHER RACING

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 5, 2005) - Last seen, Whit Bazemore was floating somewhere in the clouds after winning his first national event of the season two weeks ago in Gainesville, Fla., a week and a day after the birth of his and wife Michelle's first child, son Dashiell Aidan.

While the euphoria remains, Bazemore is en route back to Earth to defend his Funny Car points lead at this weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals driving the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus R/T for Don Schumacher Racing. He earned the lead in Florida after capturing his 18th career Funny Car victory while exceeding 300 career round wins - which now number 303.

He led the POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car point standings for the first time in 2003, following his Memphis win, then led them again in 2004 after a runner-up finish at Route 66 Raceway in the first event of two at that venue. His lead in 2005, however, after only three races, is the earliest in the season he's been at the head of the class.

But the man who has two runner-up season finishes in 16 years in the Funny Car category and is seeking his first Funny Car crown, concedes it's too early in a very long season to be counting the money.

The Indianapolis resident and two-time U.S. Nationals champion has never won at Houston Raceway. He was runner-up in 1998 and qualified No. 1 in 2002. Bazemore had never won the Gatornationals in Gainesville, either, until two weeks ago, so he hopes there's a trend happening here.

"We feel really good having won the Gatornationals," he says. "So we're going to Houston on a high and ready to do more of the same.

"We've won a lot of rounds this year (seven of nine to be exact)," says Bazemore, "at a time when our Matco Tools Dodge hasn't necessarily been the quickest car, which is fine. But we're always trying to increase the performance of the car and that's what we've worked on since Gainesville.

"I think Lee (Beard, crew chief) and the Matco Tools guys did a great job in Gainesville and in testing on Monday when my teammate Ron Capps drove my car. Lee is very confident that we're going to run even better, and that makes me even more confident.

"Being in the points lead at this point of the season is certainly rewarding," he adds, "but, in order to win the championship you have to get into the points lead and then you have to keep it. So obviously we're going to do everything we can do to keep it. But, at the same time it's somewhat precarious as we saw the previous person in the lead (Phil Burkart) not qualify in Gainesville. So you still have to work every race and work hard to get what you earn."

Atmospheric and weather conditions at Houston Raceway have historically been an advantage to the Fuel teams, but each season track preparation and off-season wear and tear provide a challenge to the teams. "Whatever it is we've got a team that can adapt, much like we did in Gainesville," says Bazemore, who leads the 13-time Funny Car champion John Force by nine points. "The idea is to put the Matco Tools Dodge up and down the race track four solid times in qualifying and get a good tune-up for race day."

AutoStar Productions, Inc.

Tommy Howes of Laytonsville, MD, had been ever so close, but had never made the winner's circle in the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels Nitro Coupe Challenge at the AutoZone Super Chevy Show.

That all changed on a beautiful Sunday at South Georgia Motorsports Park as Howes took a win in the finals over veteran Mel Eaves on April 3.

Howes came into the 2005 season with a new hot rod, a classy '69 Camaro. He made good speed, setting the top mile per hour mark for the young season in Belle Rose, LA until Mel Eaves turned in a blast of 223.88 at Valdosta. In the finals, Howes ran a 6.566 at 213.57 miles per hour to best Eaves.

Eaves, who was running only the third event with his new '63 Corvette Nitro Coupe, showed blazing speed at the South Georgia race, turning in runs of 223.88 and 223.73 mph in the first two rounds. But in the finals, Eaves ran into problems and turned in a 6.86 at 166.91 mph.

In the Top Sportsman class (presented by Pro Charger), it was an all-Florida final as Mike Thompson of Naples, FL, defeated another Florida racer, David Saul of Winter Park , to claim the crown.

The enthusiastic crowd got a thrill when two jet dragsters turned in side-by-side 300 mph runs on Sunday. 22-year old Jessie Harris in the Hanna Motorsports Queen of Diamonds ran a blazing 5.269 at 301.00 to set a new track speed record. Her opponent, Paul Miller in the US-1 jet, also cracked 300 with a 5.310 at 300.00.

A great field turned out at South Georgia Motorsports Park for the Flowmaster Bracket Racing Series. Now that all GM Brand cars can race with the AutoZone Super Chevy Show, more and more racers have the opportunity to join the fun. Here are results from Sunday's eliminations:

Super Chevy Show fans witnessed a great day of racing at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Jets, Nitro Coupes, Wheelstanders, Top Sportsmen, Super Pro, Pro, DOT racers, and Jr. Dragsters thrilled the crowd.

In Sunday's first round of jet competition, Jessica Harris and Georgia's own Paul Miller topped 300 mph side by side. Jessica set the track record with a 5.269 at 301.00 beating an impressive Paul Miller who ran a close 5.310 300.00. Paul, the Georgia Sandbagger, Miller had told this reporter that he was having some problems and probably would not run as well as he could. In the second of two scheduled runs, Jessica bettered her e. t. record with a 5.227 but the clocks failed to record her speed. Paul Miller had problems and was forced to shut off early.

In Nitro Coupe competition, defending series champ Randy Adler, the number one qualifier, looked like the car to beat. But this is drag racing! In round one, Adler (6.41 217) beat Mike Swinarski (6.72 202), Tommy Howes (6.56 213) beat Dave Tomasino's beautiful stars and stripes Camaro (6.80 208), Mel Eaves in his new 63 Corvette (6.34 223.88 low e. t. and top speed of eliminations) beat Bruce Boland (7.05 215), and Wayne Torkelson (7.55 146) beat a troubled Jeff Merritt (13.11 60.98). In round two, Tommy Howes upset Randy Adler with a 6.49 214 to a losing 9.41 92.91. Mel Eaves ran a consistent 6.367 223.73 to down Wayne Torkelson's game 6.54 214. In the final, Tommy Howes ran 6.59 209 to beat Mel Eaves' blower exploding 6.86 166.91. Experience and consistency paid off for Howes as he beat the favorites on his way to the podium.

In Top Sportsman presented by Procharger, seven cars battled for the honors over the eighth mile. In round one, Terry Duffy ran a 4.96 on his 4.70 dial in to beat a troubled Flyin' Brian Harrison. Mike Thompson ran a 4.80 on his 4.79 dial to oust Georgian Clarence Cloud's beautiful Willys' 5.07 on a 5.00 dial. Frank Palmer beat a fouling Tommy Turner. Palmer would have broken out on his run. Number one qualifier Dave Saul took a single in the odd car field. In round two, Thompson beat a fouling Palmer, and Saul ran an impressive 4.587 on a 4.58 dial in to beat Terry Duffy who broke out with a 4.75 on his 4.80 dial in. In the finals, Saul had staging problems and fouled to hand the win to Mike Thompson, who took an easy single.

Eighty-three cars battled for the Mr. Gasket Bracket #1 (Super Pro) bragging rights on Sunday. This division also ran the eighth mile distance. In the final, reigning Super Pro track champion Carey Locke had a perfect .000 r. t. and ran 4.761 on his 4.74 dial in only to lose to Mike Ruff’s outstanding 6.234 on a 6.23 dial in and a r. t. of .001. This is racing!

In eighth mile Pro action, 53 cars fought it out. In round six, Brandon Wood's wheelstanding red Nova ran a 6.825 on his 6.83 to beat a fouling J. R. Hamelink. Kelly Spring took a single. In the final, Georgian Wood ran a 6.832 on his 6.83 dial in (.033 r. t.) to beat King’s 6.903 on his 6.89 dial in (.055 r. t.).

Full quarter mile DOT eliminator boiled down to Brandon Tillman's orange Corvette out of Moultrie, Georgia and Lea Uhler's van out of Gainesville, Florida. In the double breakout final, Tillman won with a 15.05 on his 15.14 dial (.017 r. t.) to Uhler's very late .098 r. t. and 12.56 on a 12.70 dial in.

Jr. Dragster was a family affair as reigning Jr. Dragster track champion Bobby Mouat beat sister Morgan. The racing Mouat family had quite a weekend as dad Bruce won the special Saturday night bonus race combining Super Pro and Pro. Bruce ran a 4.904 on his 4.90 dial in (.024 r. t) to take the money back to Ty Ty, Georgia. Joe Williams in his beautiful Undercover dragster had to settle for runner-up with a 5.08 on is 5.05 dial in (.029 r. t.).

Bob Hall brought out his exciting Airborne Express wheelie van to thrill the crowd. After a couple of great passes, he broke the crank. But Bob was not finished. He dug deep into his trailer and brought out the old Paddy Wagon wheelstander and made more great passes to the delight of the crowd! What a showman!

The Super Chevy circuit next visits Memphis, Tennessee in two weeks.
