BAZEMORE NO. 1 ON FRIDAY IN COLUMBUS

HEBRON, Ohio (June 11, 2004) - Whit Bazemore and crew chief Lee Beard
continue their strong performances with the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge
Stratus Funny Car, as Bazemore broke the Funny Car ET and speed track
records here at National Trail Raceway tonight to become low qualifier. The
Funny Car points leader blistered the quarter-mile tonight, in the second
qualifying session, with a 4.774-second pass at 325.92 mph.

"We felt good going into tonight," he said. "We had second low ET of the
first session (4.873/304.05), shutting it off a little early with a cylinder
out down track. The runs on Friday night in the summertime are the runs that
really count if you're trying to go for No. 1 and when you run well during
the first session, you're in a position to go for No. 1 and you can afford
to make a mistake. So Lee (Beard, crew chief) and the guys prepared a
perfect car and it went right down there. It was somewhat of a handful but
it ran really strongly; we hung with it, and we ended up with a 4.77. I
think given the conditions we have here, it's pretty damned good."

The track has been re-paved and the weather conditions tonight were
extremely humid. "It's just a little slick," he added, "and the groove is
really narrow and the car wanted to move around. It was right on the edge.
It moved out of the groove just a tiny bit; (I was) able to bring it back.
It stayed glued. It's important that you don't get any tire spin, so we were
fortunate.

"These results are to the credit of Lee Beard and (co-crew chief) Dan Olson
and (chief mechanic) Ronnie Thompson. The guys on the team, especially in
qualifying, are the ones that make the call. The car is virtually perfect.
It puts more pressure on me, honestly, because all I can do is mess it up.
They give me a perfect car. We're either going to make a perfect run if I do
my job right, or I'm going to make a mistake and we're going to be less than
what we could have been. But, honestly, the car is flawless. While my job is
a little harder because of the pressure, it's actually a lot easier to drive
because I don't have to worry about anything. It's a real pleasure to drive.

"In this sport, unfortunately, you have to prove yourself every weekend,
every run. We can't take anything for granted. We have to work hard every
run, every day, stay totally focused on what we're trying to do. If we do
that I think the Matco Tools team has a good chance of being a contender all
year and that's really all we can ask for, and then rise above when we need
to."

Warren Johnson – Master Innovator
NHRA.com article
Jacono, 70, Comes Out of Retirement To Race "Rollin' Stoned" at Second Annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion

POMONA, Calif. - (June 9, 2004) - He raced against the legendary "Jungle
Jim" Liberman in the ''70s, and now, at age 70 himself, Joe Jacono will be
racing at the second annual Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion, presented
by DuPont Automotive Refinishes.

Jacono's "Rollin Stoned" 1973 Cuda Funny Car was uncovered in
2001 under the yellow paint of Bob Rosetty's R/D Racing. Jacono
authenticated the car last year at the inaugural National Hot Rod Reunion and
actually has the original bill of sale to certify that he bought the car from the
builder, Woody Gilmore, in 1973. At this year's reunion, Jacono will match
race against another legend, Lou Sgro's "Black Magic." But before he could
do that, Jacono had to renew his NHRA racing license.

He last sat in a racing car in 1977, so in March of this year, Jacono
went to Doug Foley's Drag Racing School in Florida. Jacono made
consecutive passes in Gary Trimble's dragster on at 60 feet, 330 feet, half
track, 1,000 foot and a full quarter mile to get his license. He killed the clock
at 8.23 seconds at an average speed of 160 miles per hour.

"Joe is one of the true pioneers of the sport," said Steve Gibbs,
board member and former director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports
Museum in Pomona, Calif., producers of the festive four-day hot rod
extravaganza. "It's going to be great to see him race again. The crowd will
love it"

"I paid my dues a long time ago," said Jacono from his home in
Florida. "It's my turn now." Paid his dues? That's putting it mildly. He
started drag racing in 1955 and campaigned in New Jersey, Maryland,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois,
North and South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Canada.

He owned and built many of the cars he raced. In 1962, he won the
NASCAR Winternationals in Daytona Beach, Fla., in a Linwood Welding Chassis
Dragster with a supercharged Buick engine. Yes, that's correct, in those
days, NASCAR actually sanctioned drag racing.

He also raced in the American Hot Rod Association and set a record of
8.36 seconds at 180 mph in his 1963 dragster. He also set an NHRA record
for gas dragsters at 8.74 seconds. In 1964, his alcohol dragster was the first
to run in the seven-second bracket with a 7.95 second pass at 192 mph.

Teaming with Bill Winward in the "Brief Encounter" fuel dragster with a
Chrysler engine, he won seven meets in a row and was named the NASCAR
Fuel Champion Driver of the Year.

He continued racing in dragsters and in 1969 was the first driver in the
country to run an elapsed time of 6.59 seconds. He was the runner-up in the
AHRA Nationals, defeating Don "Big Daddy" Garlits in the second round.

By 1973, he owned and drove "Rollin Stoned," an AA Funny Car, winning
the NHRA open in Cecil County, N.J. in 1974. By 1977, he hung up his driving
gloves and left the sport.until now.

"This deal came together last year at the Reunion," said Jacono. "I'm
really happy about getting back behind the wheel." Fans at the Reunion will
be just as happy to see him run.

Produced by the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, the Holley
National Hot Rod Reunion, presented by DuPont Automotive Finishes, will
include Crane Cams nostalgic drag racing in such classes at Top Fuel,
Supercharged Gassers, classic Funny Cars and Super Stocks, along with a
giant street rod, customs, classics and muscle car SofffSeal "show n' shine,"
swap meet for classic car and racing parts, special stage show and a
separate amusement park with rides and games for all ages adjacent to the
park.

Fashioned after the annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion in
Bakersfield, the event also includes the all-time favorite "Cacklefest" under
the stars. The activity involves early-days-style front-engine dragsters being
push-started, then all gathered together on the drag strip starting-line with
engines running.

The Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion, presented by DuPont
Automotive Refinishes, will also cater to car clubs, with special contests and
activities for clubs. Information-including a full activities schedule and entry
forms-is available through the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. To
receive updated information, prospective participants should send a post card
or note to NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion, P.O. Box 2345, Pomona, Calif.
91769. Or e-mail your name and address to museum@nhra.com.

Proceeds of the Holley Hot Rod Reunion, presented by DuPont
Automotive Refinishes, will benefit the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum.
The museum houses the very roots of hot rodding. Scores of famous vehicles
spanning American motorsports history are on display, including winning cars
representing 50 years of drag racing, dry lakes and salt-flat racers, oval track
challengers and exhibits describing their colorful backgrounds.

The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is open Wednesday through
Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., PST, with extended hours during NHRA national
events. Current NHRA members are admitted free. Admission for non-members
is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors 60 and older, $3 for juniors six through 15, and
free for children under the age of five. The Museum is also available for
private parties, meetings, corporate events, weddings and special group
tours. The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is located at Fairplex Gate
1, 1101 W. McKinley Ave. in Pomona. For further information on special
exhibits, museum events or directions, call 909/622-2133 or visit

G Squared Motorsports to debut the G Squared/S&S/Star Racing Buell
Courtesy Jerry Battle

HEBRON, Ohio, (June 8, 2004) - On the eve of this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing, there is exciting news from Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports. The long-awaited debut of the G Squared/S&S Buell, powered by an S&S V-Twin, will take place this weekend on the National Trail Raceway quarter-mile with Fred Collis, who currently handles the driving duties on the Star Racing Suzuki, moving to the new bike.

"We tested the G Squared/S&S Buell after the last bike race in Chicago and felt that the numbers (times and speeds) run in that test session, which were comparable to the Suzuki, dictated that we move the V-Twin-powered bike to actual competition," said George Bryce, who along with George Smith, part owner of S&S Cycle, Incorporated, are partners in G Squared Motorsports. "

In 2003, Smith approached Bryce about going NHRA Pro Stock Bike racing with an S&S-powered V-Twin and the pair formed G Squared Motorsports to develop motorcycle engines and bikes.

"We knew that if we combined the talent and knowledge of Star Racing and S&S Cycle we could develop a competitive bike," said Bryce. "Our debut at Columbus is another step in the development phase and another step toward regaining the NHRA championship."

But the news doesn't stop there. The Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports Suzuki will also be in action with Matt Smith, son of veteran Pro Stock car driver "Tricky" Rickie Smith, aboard one of the most coveted rides on the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle circuit for Columbus.

"It's the first time we will have a two-bike team in quite a while. Matt Smith is a good racer. He's the same weight as Fred and although he hasn't shown his potential yet in NHRA racing, he has won in a number of other forms of motorcycle racing and, with the right equipment, can do the same here," noted Bryce.

"Matt Smith's goal has always been to have a chance to show what he can do and one of his sponsors Red Line Oil is coming along with him to give him that chance. We welcome Red Line Oil and Matt Smith on board for Columbus. Hopefully, it will be the start of a great career for the young driver."

"Everybody on this team is excited about Columbus. Fred (Collis) won here last year but this is a whole new ball game. We've always done well on this track and hope our track record here will enable us to put on a good show for the fans," added Bryce.

Collis feels the debut race will go as planned. "Our testing has given us some good numbers that popped up on the board and George Bryce and George Smith feels there's no sense in wasting anymore time. The new G Squared/S&S/Star Racing Buell had comparable numbers to the Suzuki. We've got the power, so it's just a matter of getting the tuning just right to get the elapsed times we're looking for. We should be okay," said Collis.

"The V-Twin market, both in the stands and throughout the reach of drag racing, is way bigger than most people realize. We are definitely excited that we can bring something new for the fans and hopefully we can give them a good show."

Even though he is the son of a well-known Pro Stock car driver, Matt Smith opted for racing the two-wheeled variety. "It was the best way to go financially," said Smith. Now Smith has a new opportunity.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to ride the G2/Star Racing Suzuki," added the thirty-one-year-old Smith. "I think it could be a good deal for both of us. George Bryce has produced championship riders since the late 80s and if all goes well, I hope to add my name to that list in the future.

"At Columbus, I just plan to do my job and learn from the top teacher in the business. I know I'm in good hands with George. I want to thank G2/ Star Racing and Red Line Oil for giving me this opportunity."

The Pontiac Excitement Nationals opens with two professional qualifying sessions for the Pro Stock bike and car classes on Friday (June 11) at 4 and 7 p.m. and two final qualifying sessions on Saturday (June 12) at noon and 2:30 p.m. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. All times is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Subject to change, same-day television coverage can be seen on ESPN with qualifying highlights on Saturday (June 12) from 7-8 p.m. Eliminations will air on ESPN2 on Sunday (June 13) from 3-6 p.m. All times is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Warren Johnson Works Instead of Worrying About Competition

GM Performance Parts driver looks for return to Pontiac Excitement Nationals winner's circle

SUGAR HILL, GA., June 8, 2004 - Throughout his illustrious career, GM Performance Parts pilot Warren Johnson has rewritten the NHRA record books, raising the bar in virtually every category. His 92 national event wins are the most by anyone in the Pro Stock division, outpacing such legends as Bob Glidden and Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. In addition, his 130 No. 1 qualifying performances and 142 final round appearances lead all professional categories. As such, every week his on-track exploits are held to a higher standard than those of many of his competitors.

Therefore, even though he is one of only five drivers to have won in the last 20 races, and scored a runner-up finish at this year's Winternationals, some have expressed concern over Johnson's current seventh-place standing in the POWERade points entering this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. "The Professor", however, knows the season has not even reached its midpoint, and remains focused on finding a means to return the GM Performance Parts Grand Am to the Columbus winner's circle.

"As anyone who has ever participated in a competitive endeavor will tell you, things do not always run smoothly," stated Johnson. "It's how you respond to these down periods that truly defines a team's character.

"Although I wouldn't say we are particularly pleased by our performance to this point, we have been competitive, and we've been close on several occasions. Unfortunately, just being close doesn't win races, which is this team's yardstick. We're not going to worry about it, we're simply going to fix it."

Naturally, the team's primary focus in this venture has been on their race car. With the luxury of a weekend without racing prior to the next event, Johnson and his crew performed a thorough examination of all facets of their racing operation, searching for the extra performance that will return them to the top.

"Since we've returned from Topeka we've taken the entire car apart, dissecting every component," explained Johnson. "We've also compared our set-up to the one that Kurt has been running in his car, because the chassis are identical, and adjusted accordingly. It's a matter of finding out what our GM Performance Parts Grand Am needs to consistently go down the racetrack.

"We've taken a hard look at everything, determined our strengths and weaknesses, and focused on the areas that caused us to get into this predicament. In other words, we're working our way out of it.

"I believe we're doing fine in the power department. We're continuing to run the DRCE 3 engines, which at this point are fairly equal to the best of our DRCE 2 equipment, which we're using in Kurt's car. However, we need to get this car to leave the starting line better than it has. Our sixty-foot times are nowhere near what they should be, always falling in the middle of the pack, not near the top of the charts. If we can fix that, we should be in pretty good shape."

Johnson's record at previous races held at National Trail Raceway would seem to bolster his chances for a return to the winner's circle this weekend, as well as his extensive notes from racetracks across the country, which will provide him with valuable tuning information to prepare for the recently repaved track.

"The racing surface this weekend will be an unknown factor to most of us prior to our arrival, as I understand it has been completely resurfaced following the problems we encountered there last year," said Johnson. "Of course, it will put us in a similar situation to what we encountered in Chicago a few weeks ago, where we did relatively well, so hopefully it will all play into our game plan.

"Basically, we will go back to the set-up we used at the beginning of the season, adjust for the changes in the weather conditions, and take it from there. Depending on how our test session goes in Atlanta next week, I feel confident that we should see a return to form by this GM Performance Parts Grand Am in Columbus."

Kurt Johnson Makes Minor Moves in Preparing for Columbus

ACDelco Racing team confident in their Pro Stock Cavalier's performance

Sugar Hill, Ga., June 8, 2004 - For the first time in over a month, competitors in the NHRA's POWERade Drag Racing Series will have a weekend without racing prior to their next event. Several teams will take advantage of the extra time before the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio to completely reconfigure their race cars, making major changes as they search for extra performance.

Coming off a runner-up finish in Topeka a week ago, however, Kurt Johnson and his ACDelco Racing team will take a more conservative approach as they prepare their Cavalier for competition. As Johnson sees it, there is no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

"We're pretty pleased with the ACDelco Cavalier's performance in the last few races, so we'll be fine-tuning instead of rebuilding it," said Johnson. "For example, anything extra we can throw under the hood will definitely help, so we'll see if we can find a few extra horses on the dyno.

"The car has been really strong in the first 300 feet, but down a little on speed at the eighth mile, so we'd like to pick that up, as well as the overall performance in the back half. The bottom line is that we don't want to run equal to everyone else, we want to be better. We know we have something we can work and win with, so we're just going to do a little tweaking."

Having a good handle on his race car, perhaps the biggest challenge facing Johnson this weekend will be taming the new racing surface at National Trail Raceway. Traditionally one of the toughest on the entire circuit, its rough, bumpy surface put drivers to the test in the past, with two rookie pilots ending their runs on their roofs a year ago.

Much to the relief of every competitor in the pit area, however, the track has received extensive attention since the NHRA's last visit, including a total resurfacing of the quarter-mile. Therefore, the first race this weekend will be to find the proper combination to extract the maximum performance.

"Going in, we really don't know what to expect from the new surface," stated Johnson. "I've only spoken to one person, who was pretty positive about it, but, quite frankly, anything will be better than what we had to race on before. We will have to see what we have when we get there.

"National Trail is one track that for some reason has given me trouble throughout my career. The best I've done there so far is a final round appearance during my rookie season, so we would certainly like to break into the win column this weekend.

"We will just have to get the tune-up right, matching the motor to the gear to the clutch to the race track, and do it better than our competitors. Fortunately, I believe this ACDelco crew is going to Columbus in better shape than we ever have before, so I'm confident we are going to do well. We'll go there, let the clutch fly and see what we can do."

BAZEMORE AND MATCO TOOLS TEAM WELL-GROUNDED ON HEELS OF HOT STREAK
COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 8, 2004) - As the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series
heads into the summer months, beginning another three-race swing at National
Trail Raceway this weekend for the 10th round of the 23-race series, Funny
Car points leader Whit Bazemore and his Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus
team have their feet firmly planted on Earth.

Following Bazemore's tear through the first nine races of the season, which
included reaching five final rounds in the last six races, two wins, setting
a Funny Car elapsed time national record of 4.713 seconds, recording the
quickest and fastest Funny Car pass in NHRA history, and establishing the
fastest ever Funny Car speed of 333.25 mph, the team is settling in for a
long, hot summer and not resting on their laurels.

"We're not coming into Columbus on a high, actually," said Bazemore, who
leads the Funny Car point standings by 76 over Del Worsham and 80 over John
Force. "I think our Matco Tools team is very well-grounded. We went into the
last race leading the POWERade points championship. We were able to win the
event with new expectations heaped upon us.

"We're confident. We have to work hard, do a perfect job, the car has to be
right, and we have to have a little bit of racing luck. If we have all those
things I think we can extend our string of final round appearances. That is
our goal.

"A good weekend for us is still getting to the semifinals or better. We're
not aiming just to do that, we're aiming to go and win and we have a team
and car that's capable of it.

"The bottom line is it comes down to us and the decisions we make and the
job we do. If we do all that right, we'll be there," added the two-time U.S.
Nationals champion who is still seeking his first Funny Car championship
after two runner-up finishes in his 16-year pro career.

Bazemore's record at National Trail Raceway includes a runner-up finish in
1997 and a No. 1 qualifying effort in 2002. Last year he qualified seventh,
then lost in the second round to his perennial rival John Force. But, as an
avid cyclist, he enjoys the locale. "It's a fun city," he said. "Columbus is
a good city. And, there's not bad riding right out from the track. We go out
the back of the race track. It's pretty much out in the country and there
isn't much traffic, so there's good cycling here.

"And with our sponsor Matco Tools being based in Stow, Ohio, I know we'll
have a good fan base cheering us on here as well."

Lucas Oil Series Race at South Georgia Motorsports Park
by Marvin T. Smith

Over 300 cars raced at South Georgia Motorsports Park this weekend in the NHRA Division 2 Lucas Oil Series race. Cars from as far away as Calfornia and Canada tried to win valuable Lucas points in their bid to become NHRA world champions. This was easily the largest event in South Georgia history. Race cars spilled onto the usual spectator parking area.

Top Alcohol Dragster was dominated by the blown dragster of Guy Kelly. A
six car field narrowed down to Kelly vs. Michael Gunderson. Kelly bettered
his low qualifier et of 5.48 with a better 5.47 in the final. Gunderson
took top speed of the event in his losing effort at 267.64, but his 5.67
just couldn't catch up with the quicker Kelly.

Top Alcohol Funny Car was won by Norcross, Georgia's Mark Billington, when
heavily favored Jay Payne of Claremont, California broke. Billington
singled at 6.10 at 235 for the win, while Payne had earlier set low et at
5.77 and top speed at 244.

Competition Eliminator featured some heavyweights. Multi-time national
event winner David Rampy had the first leg of a new NHRA national record at
7.42 177 in his A/EA, but failed to back it up. Even with this impressive
effort, top qualifier went to Glen Treadwell's E/EA at 8.47 (.592 under the
index). In the end, neither of these two cars made it to the final. Mike
Saye's no. 3 qualifying H/A Cutlass beat Dick Maris' national record
holding C/D with an 8.96 to Maris' 7.30.

Super Stock went to Robert Burgin's Firebird over the beautiful Hemi Cuda
SS/AA of John Gifford. Burgin's 9.90 overtook Gifford's 9.28.

Stock Eliminator wet to Jimmy Parker's 71 Corvette over Garry Glazener's 72
Mustang.

Jerry Sosebee outlasted a large field of Super Comp cars, running an 8.91
over Wesley Keir's breaking out 8.88.

Super Gas was won by the beautiful 57 Chevy of Wayne Bogle over Don
Bartram's 92 Barretta. Bogle won on a holeshot, his 9.93 holding off the
nearly perfect 9.907 of Bartram.

Super Street went to Michael Ruff over low qualifier Tony Fuller. Ruff is
last year's Division Champion, while Fuller was the number two car last
year. Ruff needed a holeshot to win this one. It doesn't get much better
than this.

Top Sportsman racing was exciting, with all cars running in the 7 second
zone. Low qualifier Ronnie Davis dipped into the sixes, with a 6.94 at
200.59. Twenty five cars raced, but in the end, Gilmer Hinshaw took his 99
Monte Carlo to a 7.39 (7.36 dial in) victory over Jeff Pittman's 68 Yenko
Chevelle's losing 7.56 (7.56 dial in).
