Eighty-two cars attempted to qualify for the 32 car field to prove who was the best. After five rounds of tough racing, David Wolfe from Fort Worth, Texas, defeated Scotty Guadagno from New York. On his way to victory, Wolfe ran the quickest elapsed time ever recorded on radial tires when he scorched the SGMP track with an amazing 4.447 second run in the eighth mile.
