Warren Johnson Looks to Give the DRCE 3 Win #1 in Reading

Recent progress has GM Performance Parts team looking forward to defending their 2003 win

SUGAR HILL, GA., September 15, 2004 - In a sport of racing in straight lines, Warren Johnson is in the process of turning a corner. Throughout most of the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season, Johnson and his GM Performance Parts Racing team have been working to develop a unique combination featuring the third generation General Motors Drag Racing Competition Engine (better known as the DRCE 3).

As the only participant using this new powerplant in competition, it undoubtedly has been a challenge. However, this has only served to strengthen Johnson's resolve. In fact, based on the team's performance at the U.S. Nationals, he believes they are moving ever closer to regaining the winning form for which they are known.

"Our performance in Indianapolis was definitely a step in the right direction, but we won't be happy until we have a minute on the field," joked Johnson. "In all seriousness, I believe we've finally fixed whatever malady was affecting the old hot rod, turning it back into a fast piece we can work with.

"We're certainly pleased by our recent progress, but our goal is to take bigger strides. Therefore, since our return from the U.S. Nationals, we have been working on ways to pick up the pace and put our GM Performance Parts Grand Am in an even better position for this weekend in Reading."

Located in middle of the Pennsylvania farm country, Maple Grove Raceway has been the site of many historic NHRA performances, with Johnson contributing his share of notable moments. In nineteen previous starts, "The Professor" has racked up four wins in nine final round appearances, which is the most by any Pro Stock competitor. Johnson's most recent victory in Reading came one year ago, when he charged from the 14th starting position at the rain-delayed event to capture the 92nd win of his storied career.

"Last year's win came under unusual circumstances, to say the least," recalled Johnson. "First, the race was delayed two weeks by rain, and then, after an abbreviated qualifying session, we started from a less than ideal position in 14th. Finally, the weekend culminated with the Christmas tree running on a generator in the final due to a power outage in the area. It might not have been the ideal situation, but it all worked out in the end, and any win is a good one.

"Maple Grove has been one of those tracks where we have historically done well, although I'm not exactly sure why. Perhaps our chassis tuning philosophy is enhanced by the track conditions we encounter there, or maybe we subconsciously see something and attack it.

"It could also be that the Reading race comes later in the year, when the temperatures are a little cooler, and the track is a little better than what we encounter during the summer, which tends to favor our aggressive approach to tuning the race car. It's hard to pinpoint the exact reason, but in any case, I'm not about to fight it, and it is a trend that I hope to continue this weekend.

"Although I could use about another month of development time, we're certainly looking forward to getting back on the track. Having finally gotten a handle on our GM Performance Parts Grand Am, we will now go back through our notes from the early part of the year to get an idea of what set-up we can start with at Maple Grove and work from there. With the combination of a fast race car and a friendly race track, we should be in great shape to back up our win from one year ago."

* WJ Reigns in Reading: This will be Warren's 20th NHRA Pro Stock national event appearance at Maple Grove Raceway, where he has four wins (the most by any Pro Stock driver) in nine final round appearances, and a 38-10 elimination round record for a .792 win percentage.
* Warren Starts Strong at the 'Grove: In his nineteen previous starts in Reading, WJ has six No. 1 qualifying positions, with an average starting position of 2.95, and only four starts outside the top three spots.
* One year ago - Defending Champion: WJ qualified 14th with an elapsed time of 6.792 seconds with a top speed of 203.80 mph, and defeated Jeg Coughlin, Jim Yates, Larry Morgan and Troy Coughlin en route to the 92nd win of his career.
* Winning Streak: Warren Johnson is looking to extend a streak where has won at least one race a year for 22 consecutive years, which is the longest in NHRA history.
* No. 1 in National event wins: WJ's 92 national event victories are the most ever in the history of the Pro Stock division and place him second on the all-time NHRA win list. His most recent win came at Maple Grove Raceway one year ago at the 2003 Lucas Oil Nationals.

Kurt Johnson Looks to Have Luck on His Side in Reading

AC Delco Racing team aims for fourth trip to Maple Grove winner's circle

Sugar Hill, Ga., September 14, 2004 - A successful NHRA Pro Stock racing team consists of several key elements. The first is having the proper funding, allowing the purchase of equipment, from the finely-tuned race car and a supply of powerful 500 cubic-inch engines, to the materials necessary to transport and maintain it throughout the course of the grueling 23-race POWERade Drag Racing season.

In addition, the effort must be supported by a talented and dedicated crew who will work long hours at the track and in the shop, making sound decisions to make the most of the ever-changing atmospheric and track conditions. The final ingredient is one over which the team has little control - simple racing luck.

Knowing he has the first two pieces of this high-speed puzzle well in hand, AC Delco Cavalier pilot Kurt Johnson enters this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals in Reading, PA looking to complete the picture with a little good luck, which he plans to generate through hard work and meticulous preparation.

"You can have the strongest team and the best equipment, but luck still plays a part," said Johnson. "For example, the difference between a successful weekend and going home early can boil down to being in the good lane for the best qualifying session, something you have no way of controlling. As close as the competition has become in Pro Stock over the last few races, everything comes into play.

"We've been bitten by the racing gods a couple of times in the past, but we're not going to worry about it. We have put it all behind us and focused on the task ahead. We know this ACDelco Racing team has all the right parts, so it's up to us to bear down and make sure we take advantage of any and every opportunity, and make our own luck."

The first piece of good fortune on Johnson's horizon may be the location of this weekend's race. In his 11 previous races at Maple Grove Raceway, the second-generation driver has three wins, which is second behind only his father, Warren Johnson, among active Pro Stock drivers. Even so, Johnson knows that an error-free performance will be necessary this weekend in order to make a return trip to the winner's circle.

"We're cautiously optimistic about our chances for this weekend," said Johnson. "Our ACDelco Cavalier has been running well of late, and for the most part, we've been making solid tuning decisions. In addition, we're going to Maple Grove Raceway, where, with a couple exceptions, we have run well in the past.

"However, the entire team realizes that past history means little once we arrive in Reading and, as last year showed, there is absolutely no room for error. After falling shy by a couple of thousandths under some very unusual circumstances in 2003, our plan for this race is quite simple. We're going to hit the track and unload with both barrels. We've already shown we know the way to the winner's circle at Maple Grove, and with a lot of skill and a little luck, it's a drive we'll make again this weekend."

Facts on Kurt Johnson and the ACDelco Racing Team entering the Lucas Oil Nationals:
* KJ Runs Well at Reading: This will be Kurt's 12th appearance at Maple Grove Raceway, where he has three wins in nine starts, and an 17-9 elimination round record.
* Winning percentage: Kurt's .645 elimination round winning percentage (372-207) ranks 10th among all active NHRA professional drivers.
* National event wins: Kurt's 28 national event victories ties him for 14th on the all-time NHRA professional win list, and tie him for fourth on the all-time Pro Stock win list. Kurt's most recent win came at this year's Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals in Phoenix, AZ.
* Career best elapsed time: 6.716 seconds, Englishtown, NJ. 2003
* Career best top speed: 206.61 mph, Englishtown, NJ. 2003

BAZEMORE AIMS TO TAKE IT UP A NOTCH AT MAPLE GROVE RACEWAY

READING, Pa. (Sept. 15, 2004) - Whit Bazemore can boast of scoring one No. 1 qualifying position (2002) and two Funny Car runner-up finishes (2001, 2002) at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in his 16-year NHRAPOWERade Drag Racing Series career. A first win at this track this weekend, however, to add to his 17 career victories, is what he'd really like to crow about.

The driver of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus from the Don Schumacher Racing camp has won twice this season after reaching five final rounds and stands third in the Funny Car points rankings. Bazemore reached the semifinal round at the last event, the U.S. Nationals, and is within striking distance of his teammate Gary Scelzi in second place. Just 21 points behind, Bazemore could make a push towards leader John Force, 227 points ahead, with a good result here.

"Maple Grove Raceway is a decent track for us," said the two-time U.S. Nationals champion. "We've been runner-up here a couple of times and we've run well here. It's been a good place. We're getting ready to give it our best and hopefully we can improve our performance and come away with the trophy.

"This weekend's event is also the start of the fifth three-race, back-to-back swing of the season (the season-opener in Pomona was rained out and re-scheduled for the following weekend. The Phoenix race followed the nextweek.)

"It's a challenge on many fronts," said Bazemore, whose 4.713-second run at 333.25 mph in Joliet, Ill., this year set a national elapsed-time record andwas the quickest and fastest pass in Funny Car history. "It's the fifth set of three in a rows that we'll have, so it's no different than being out West earlier in the year, but it will certainly take its toll on everyone on theMatco Tools team. We're ready for it.

"We have a Marathon coach that can criss-cross the country at warp speed,"he laughed. "That's how we get to where we're going. We'll be in our home-away-from-home for the next couple of weeks."

Knocking John Force out of the championship lead with five races remaining is a difficult task, conceded the Indianapolis resident who is seeking his first Funny Car championship after two runner-up finishes. "He'd have to make a lot of mistakes and miss his flights to all the races."

SCHEDULE:Pro qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals will be held at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 and will continue at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sept. 18. Final professional eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 19.

TELEVISION:ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying at 4 p.m. (ET) on Sept 18. ESPN2 will televise NHRA 2Day, a 30-minute magazine show, at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sept. 19. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage at4 p.m. (ET) on Sept. 19.

Augusta International Raceway Memorial Dedication

by Don Hamilton

On Saturday, September 11th, a Memorial Dedication remembering the Augusta International Raceway, was held at the Diamond Lakes Regional Park in Augusta, Ga. What was unusual about this Memorial is that it honors a track that has been closed for over 40 years. Augusta International Raceway was a three mile road course that opened in November of 1963. The first race was a 510 mile NASCAR event that was won by Fireball Roberts. The last races at A.I.R. were held on March1st of 1964 and were USRRC sports car races and won by Dave MacDonald and Ken Miles In an eerie twist of fate all three drivers would lose their lives in racing accidents within the next two years. Two drivers that participated in those events, 1960 NASCAR champion Rex White and Ted Tidwell were present at the dedication and were awarded plaques to commemorate the occasion.

For more information on the track and its history, you can contact the Augusta International Raceway Preservation Society at http://www.historicmustang.com

(Commerce, GA - September 11) Thousands of loyal Mopar fans enjoyed the 2004 edition of the Hayes Mopar Meet at Atlanta Dragway. The show began Friday evening, with a four hour test and tune session and vendor setup. A huge car show, five brand new concept cars, a bustling vendors midway, a car corral featuring many used Chrysler corporation machines and a swap meet featuring used Moparts from the 50's through the present were only part of the attraction on Saturday. On track action was also plentiful. NHRA Pro Stock Mopar racers Larry Morgan and Allen Johnson made several crowd pleasing high 6.80 and low 6.90 second passes at 200mph. Johnny Kelley brought his NHRA Super Stocker Dixie Hemi Barracuda to the facility and turned in low nine second passes with his Ray Barton Hemi powered machine. Paul Miller's US One Jet Dragster was another popular exhibition car. Over 240 race cars participated in eight different drag racing classes, producing eight different happy winners. The Minette family continued their reign in the Kauffman Tire burnout contest, with John Minette winning in 2004. "The weather was great. It's been a good day. Lots of nice cars, here we go again," commented Mike and Jeremy Hayes on the outcome of their show. They also thanked Lake City Cruisers and the North Georgia Mopar Club for their help with the show.

The car show covered several acres of the Atlanta Dragway facility, and examples from the 40s and up were available viewer's enjoyment. One of the oldest cars was Hendersonville, NC resident Grady Hawkins '47 Dodge, and classes like Winged Car, Hemi Car, PT Cruisers, Vipers and many more were represented. Doris Tollison brought her mint '55 Chrysler 300 down from Greenville, SC, complete with a dual quad 331 hemi engine. James Sirman's lime green '74 Gremlin X from Nashville, GA was a looker. Judy and Mike Holman's '65 Belvedere II from Knoxville, TN was a sleeper car, with not much indication a 426 hemi engine was lurking under the hood.

The manufacturer's midway featured many new Mopar products for sale. The Hayes Family Dealerships booth featured brand new crate engines, including a 380hp 360 cubic inch engine and a hotter 435hp 402 engine. Some of the new turbochargers available were also on display. Further down, the Middle Georgia and the North Georgia Mopar clubs had information booths set up. The Year One Restoration and Performance trailer was open for business, featuring high quality replacement parts for Chrysler products.

Five different concept cars wowed the crowd in front of the Mopar Performance Speed Shop. The ME Four Twelve looked like a ground based rocket, with its quad turbo 850hp V-12 mid engine and seven speed Ricardo double clutch transmission. Another popular car was the Jeep Willys 2, a back-to-basics machine. The Airflite, Avenger and Slingshot also showcased new ideas.

Another popular place on the midway was the Dave Dunbar's Diesel Performance Dynojet Chassis Dyno. The first 30 dyno pulls were taken care of by Hayes Chrysler, which was very much appreciated by the participants. Darren Morrison, a Pro Street Diesel class racer, put his '95 Dodge RAM on the dyno, and registered 699hp. The torque went up to 1200ft. lbs., but the dyno quit registering data at that point. A stock diesel RAM truck registered 254hp and 631ft. lb. of torque. Oh yes, cars were also allowed on the dyno.

A Run for the Money event was held for the bracket racers prior to the first round of competition, and the winners were D.J. McClellan ('70 Duster - Suwanee, GA) in Super Pro, Joe Haddon ('67 Chevy II - Oxford, GA) in Sportsman and Jackie Lastinger in Jr. Dragster. Ed Nalley of Nalley Racing Engines put up a $50 award for the best package in round three for Sportsman and Super Pro. Joe Powell ('70 Dodge Dart - Winder, GA) won the Sportsman portion and Jim Mayfield ('92 Beretta - Gainesville, GA) won the Super Pro portion.

Former Super Pro champion and current 2004 Super Pro points leader Mike Ramsey from Commerce, GA added another win to the books in Super Pro action, defeating Stacy Blanton of Jefferson, GA in the final. Ramsey's '81 Don Ness built Camaro turned in a .02 over 5.65 second, 122.26mph winning pass, while Blanton's '04 Undercover dragster went .003 seconds too quick, (5.077 on a 5.08 target). Ramsey thanked Mark Hancock, who helped him out in the later rounds, as Ramsey's daughter, Taylor was also participating in the Jr. Dragster portion of the Mopar show. Jeff Carter from Elgin, SC carried the Mopar banner the longest in Super Pro with his '74 Dodge Demon, making it to the semi-final round. The other semi-final finisher was Larry Barefoot ('65 Chevy II - Bethlehem, GA).

Robert Wilbanks from Winder, GA has raced in Sportsman seriously for three years, and enjoyed his first victory in tonight's final against Alpharetta, GA racer Gordon Warren. Warren had a bit of a holeshot advantage at the starting line, but his '67 Camaro went too quick at the big end of the track, running 11.41, 113.96mph on a 11.43 dial. Wilbank's '65 Mustang carded a 10.43, 130.42mph effort (10.39 dial). He thanked friend Jim Johnson, saying Johnson was his right hand man. "I'm glad to win. Everything fell my way tonight," added Wilbanks." When the field was down to seven cars, four were Mopars, but by the semi-finals, the only Chrysler product left was Cumming, GA racer David Rodger's '68 Dodge Charger R/T. The other semi-finalist was Alton Clements III, brother of 8-12 Jr. Dragster winner Valerie Clements, in his best ever "big car" finish.

Brat Pack racer Phillip Wigington scored another win in Trophy Street with his Canton, GA based '00 Camaro. Wigington faced some tough competition in the form of Michael "Spoon" Seabolt from nearby "Blarsville", GA. Spoon had the advantage in the reaction time department with a near perfect .013 second reaction time, but Wigington's trusty Camaro went nearer to the dial in time of 13.84 seconds with a 13.90 at 101.89mph. Seabolt's '95 Ford Lightning truck fell way off the pace, turning in a 16.14, 79.16mph pass (15.90 dial). "Hey, my light came on. His didn't," added Wigington while he was admiring his huge Mopar Meet trophy. He thanked his girlfriend Louise for all her support of his racing. Deanna Webster (local racer Mack Everett's recently married daughter) from Blairsville, GA was the lone semi-finalist with her '83 Mustang GT.

Eleven year old Central, SC racer Valerie Clements, who won the NHRA Jr. Dragster Challenge race on August 21, made it to the final round for the third race in a row. Clements enjoyed her second win in three outings by running closer to her dial in time of 8.93, with an 8.98 at 70.49mph. Clements faced Justin Fancher (11 - Conyers, GA) in the final, and got the win when Fancher fell off the pace to a 9.27, 68.18mph pass (9.18 dial). Dylan Kent (9 - Acworth, GA) took home the semi-final trophy. Clements thanked the people who helped her, including Billy Crenshaw for racing fuel, Bill Gillen for the engine, Greg Harding of Zorn and her dad. She was joined in the winner's picture by her brother Alton Clements III, who also had a good day in Sportsman class.

Former track champion Cody Martin of Buford, GA won the first two Atlanta Dragway 13-17 Jr. Dragster races in 2004, and then enjoyed the Mopar Meet 2004 victory against Bradley Myers from Loganville, GA. The 16 year old Martin used a big starting line advantage and held off Myers with an 8.59, 74.87mph pass (8.52 dial). Myers, 14, earned the runner up trophy with a 7.94 at 80.23mph on his 7.90 dial. "Mad Matt" Gillen (13 - Gainesville) just turned 13 years old and stepped up to the 13-17 class today, enjoying a semi-final finish on his first outing. The other semi-final finisher was Danielle Krause (13 - Peachtree City, GA). Martin, a seven year Jr. Dragster veteran, thanked Little Bill, his dad, and his sister Lindsey for all their help.

Newnan, GA racer Lebron Hill took his Southern Truck Parts '95 Dodge RAM truck all the way to the winner's circle in the DHRA Diesel Shootout. Hill took advantage of a big holeshot (.083 seconds vs. opponent John Davis' .255 react) and tapped the brakes at the finish line to win with a 15.98, 82.74mph pass (15.91 dial). Davis' '01 F350 was deadly on the dial in time, but due to the late reaction time, was the second vehicle to cross the finish line with a 15.40, 89.22mph pass (15.39 dial). Charles Nash ('96 RAM - McDonough, GA) was the semi-final finisher. "This was a great experience for me. It was my first time attending this event. I'll be back," added Hill.

Bowling Green, KY racer Derek Borders won the Pro Street Diesel event with his '95 RAM easily with a 11.13 second 120.18mph pass after his opponent, Matt Stuckey ('99 RAM - Whigham, GA) snapped a transmission input shaft shortly after he left the starting line.

Jerry Dobbs ('96 Viper - Hiram, GA) won the Viper Shootout.
