Ken Grant sweeps Summit Bracket Series at South Georgia Motorsports Park

November 18, 2007

By Marvin T. Smith

It was a big, two-day Summit Series bracket race at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Over 200 cars packed the track for the race under perfect Fall weather conditions. Ken Grant was the biggest winner for the two day event, sweeping the Pro category on both Saturday and Sunday. Oddly enough, Franky Bishop was runner-up both days. The racing was close. On Sunday, Grant used a starting line advantage (.021 to .072) to beat Bishop as both ran .015 off their dial ins. In an all-dragster Sunday Super Pro final, Brendon George took the win over Glenn Newmans when Newmans broke out by .001 seconds. Saturday’s Super Pro race was won by Todd Ewing. In a hard-fought battle of Junior Dragsters, Brian Chason ran a 7.93 on his 7.91 dial to beat Matt Cook who ran 12.00 on his 11.94 dial. Cook had the reaction time advantage, but couldn’t run his number. The next big event at South Georgia Motorsports Park is the National Dragster Challenge on Saturday, December 29. The event features Wally trophies and $2,000 to Super Pro winner, $1,000 to the Pro winner, $250 to the Sportsmen winner, and $50 for the winner in two Junior Dragster classes (8-12 years and 13 and up). BELL,FORRESTER, ABNEY, COOVER, LASTINGER, HUTCHINS AND WOOD HONORED AT 2007 ATLANTA DRAGWAY SUMMIT SERIES AWARDS BANQUET

EVENT: Atlanta DragwayChampions Award Banquet
by Tim Glover

(Commerce,GA – November 17) Atlanta Dragway racers and their families came together again to honor their members, at the Georgia Mountain Center in Gainesville, GA. After the social hour, RFC Chaplain Lloyd Shanks opened the event with a prayer, and then presented bibles to four Atlanta Dragway Junior Dragster racers, Alex Krause, Clayton Wood, Cole Wood and Ashton McCammon, who came to the Lord earlier in the season.

After the buffet dinner, track manager Ray Wilkings got things going by giving away a lot of door prizes, donated by sponsors to all in attendance. Some of the prizes included VP Fuel jugs, tee shirts, caps, hand cleaner, bungee cords, and even a DVD player.

Wilkings then opened the awards ceremony by announcing news about NHRA. He also told everyone the track surface is being completely replaced, with new concrete past the eighth mile mark, and new asphalt for the remainder of the racing surface. The concrete and asphalt will be in place by the end of December, and the finishing will be done by the end of February. He then announced news about three new big events coming in 2008, including the NOPI nationals, Pinks All-Out, and the return of the Million Dollar Race.

He recognized the sponsors who helped make the 2007 season possible, including VP Fuels, Hayes Family Dealerships, Year One, Coca Cola, Summit Racing Equipment, OReilly Auto Parts, North Georgia Tractor, American Janitorial, Waste Management, RPM Truck& Trailer Sales, Tanger Outlets and Mr. Bill’s Souvenirs. He then thanked the track employees, who are the ones standing out in the hot sun all day making the race happen. He ended the introduction by thanking all the wives, girlfriends, husbands, boyfriends and family members who give up their weekends to help their loved ones race.

Participants in the OReilly Jr Drag Racing program were recognized first. The Jr Dragster program is actually composed of three different categories, 8-9 year old, 10-12 and13-17 year old. The top finishers in each program were then recognized at that time, except for the champions, who were recognized later in the evening. The Jr Dragster Qualifying Shootout winners were announced, with Dalton Rogers winning the 8-9 year class, Dylan Hutchins taking 10-12 and Morgan Wood, Kelsey Lynn and Jacquelyn Lastinger sharing the spot in 13-17.

The top finishers (except for the champions) in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle were then recognized for their accomplishments. Two perfect runs were made at Atlanta Dragway in 2007. (A perfect run is when the driver has a perfect .000 reaction time and the car goes exactly on its dial in time.) Joe Rampley was the first, followed two weeks later by J.D. Reid.
The special awards were then announced. Jeremy Hancock (Super Pro – ’05 M&M dragster), Bill Boomhower (Pro – ’65 Belvedere), Mel Abney (Sportsman – ’67 Camaro), Paul Cavanaugh (Motorcycle – ’02 Suzuki Hayabusa) and Chase Mullinax (Jr Dragster) were name as winners in the Best Appearing Car categories.

Wesley Mayfield was awarded the Junior Dragster Sportsmanship award and Bobby Bowden was named the Junior Dragster Parent of the Year in the Junior Dragster program. Jeremy Hancock was given the “big car” Sportsmanship award, and his wife Ashley Hancock was named Most Improved driver. J.D. Burford, a medical doctor who races in both Pro (finished fifth in the 2007 points) and Sportsman (finished sixth in the 2007 points) was given the Most Inspirational award. Wayne Roberts, the guy who gives everyone their ET slip after the run, was announced as the 2007 Atlanta Dragway Employee of the Year.

The end of the evening’s ceremony was reserved for the 2007 Atlanta Dragway track champions. All the champions received a champion’s jacket and a large trophy commemorating their achievement. Cole Wood (8-9 Jr Dragster) was called first to the podium to receive his award. He thanked his mom, dad, uncles, cousins and entire family that helped. Dylan Hutchins (10-12 Jr Dragster) was next. Hutchins thanked his dad, family, Bill Gillen and Mike, Debby and John who let him make some much needed passes. Jacquelyn Lastinger (13-17 Jr Dragster) came next. Lastinger thanked God, her mom and dad, brothers and grandparents for allowing her to enjoy that lifestyle.

Young Ryan Coover won the 2007 Motorcycle championship. He thanked his mom and dad for getting him into drag racing. He also thanked his girlfriend for supporting his passion. Mel Abney (Sportsman) came to the podium next, and thanked the Atlanta Dragway staff and his fellow competitors for making each week enjoyable. He then thanked his wife for allowing him to skip his chores and go racing. Dickey Forrester has been racing for 39 years, winning many races, and was announced as the 2007 Pro champion. He first competed in a 4000 lb Pontiac Catalina (which he still owns) and said he has enjoyed every bit and is looking forward to the next season. “That’s one for the AARP crowd,” he added with a smile.Thomas Bell (Super Pro) was the final recipient, and added, “I may be the most outspoken person here, but hey, someone has to do it.” He thanked his wife, crewmembers Freddie and Angie Lewis and Ed Nalley for their help. He also thanked Max King racing and Mark Milford for letting him use the “deadly green Vega” earlier in the season when his dragster was out of commission.

Ray Wilkings then closed out the evening by thanking everyone for coming out to the banquet, and added he looked forward to seeing everyone next year.

Sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), Atlanta Dragway is located just off I-85 at Exit 149 in the Banks Crossing area of Commerce, Georgia. Information on all 2008 events maybe obtained by calling the track office (706-335-2301) or logging on to

First Annual October Bikefest event at Atlanta Dragway in 2007

OCTOBERBIKEFEST FOR AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY ENJOYED BY MANY
by Tim Glover

(Commerce,GA – October 20) Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts and even more spectators came to Atlanta Dragway to enjoy the First Annual October Bikefest, a benefit event for the American Cancer Society. All proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Sociey.

Many different sponsors helped Atlanta Dragway make the event a success. Tanger Outlets, Banks County Convention and Visitors bureau, Hayes Family Dealerships, Stone Mountain Harley Davidson and Frazier’s Harley Davidson pitched in. Cycle World of Athens and Days Inn of Commerce also helped out with the show.

People like Howard, Brooke and Katelyn from nearby Commerce enjoyed taking in the entire event, which featured inflatable slides, a rock climbing wall, many different vendor booths, live music by the Eli Garland band, the Quarter Mile Challenge, non-stop test and tune runs on the track and a large bike show. Even the spectator bike parking area was mistaken by some as part of the show.

One of the main attractions was the Bike Show. All brands of bikes were welcomed, and a total of nine classes were contested for this event. Two husband and wife teams enjoyed doing well in the show. Tracy Addison of Toccoa, GA brought his Suzuki M109 Boulevard Cruiser to the event and won first place in Big Twin Cruiser. His wife, Sharon, also enjoyed a first place in the Woman Rider class with her bike. “I finally won something this year,” exclaimed a happy Jimmy Heisler, an Atlanta Dragway regular who lives in Woodstock, GA. Heisler won the 750cc and under class with his 2000 ZX6R Kawasaki, and his wife Eeman took second with her Kawasaki in the Woman Rider Class. Another Atlanta Dragway regular, Paul Cavanaugh, picked up two second place awards, one in Sport Bike, and the other in Mild Custom. Two former Atlanta Dragway racers enjoyed wins in their class, Richard Lewis (Vintage & Classic) and Bert Chapman (Sportster). First place winners received a plaque and a Year One gift certificate, and second place winners were awarded a plaque. Following are the first place award winners:

750cc& under Jimmy Heisler
1100cc& over Daniel Taylor
Vintage& Classic Richard Lewis
Sportster Bert Chapman
Big TwinCruiser Tracy Addison
MildCustom Tim Farmer
RadicalCustom Mike Jones
WomanRider Sharon Addison
Sport Bike Hector Santiago

Many of the show bikes did much more than look pretty. On track, many of the show bikes showed just how quick they could go. Quarter mile elapsed times for all participants varied mostly from the nine second range to the mid teens.

The “Big Easy” husband and wife team of Jimmy and Eeman Heisler did well in the show as well as having a ball on the track. Eeman may not have had the faster bike, but when they ran against each other, she smoked Jimmy at the starting line with a very good .012 second reaction time (his was a less spectacular.199 second time). Their elapsed times were 10.51 seconds at 125.13mph for Jimmy and 12.05 at 118.52mph for Eeman.

The service manager of Stone Mountain Harley Davidson, Dave Engebretsen, brought his big yellow 2005 CVO Screamin’ Eagle Harley to the track to test a new throttle body. He was rewarded with several 100mph plus passes in the high 12.80 and low 12.90 secondrange, very impressive numbers for a large bike. A lady racer known only as “Speed Diva”, a member of the Truly Blessed Racing Team based out of Atlanta, brought her 2006 Suzuki 1300 Hayabusa for more practice, and although she claimed she was holding back a little, she still popped off a quick 11.69 at 120.31 mph. Daniel Taylor’s first place winning bike (1100cc & over) put a very quick11.87 at 110.85 mph on the scoreboards. Many more participants enjoyed unlimited passes down the track.

A Quarter Mile Challenge was put on deck at 3:00pm, where participants donated $5 each to the American Cancer Society. The eventual goal is to have enough participants to create a human chain covering the entire quarter mile. Participants did reach the 200 foot mark for the first challenge.

The promoters of the First Annual October Bikefest added they are already looking forward to the 2008 edition of the October Bikefest, along with many of the participants.

WILHELM AND BRUCE TAKE TOP WINS, PAPPY CHANCE HAS BANNER WEEKEND AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY’SFALL SPECTACULAR

Fall Spectacular event at AtlantaDragway in 2007
by Tim Glover

(Commerce,GA – October 13-14) First, congratulations to Atlanta Dragway’s Summit ET team, which placed second out of fifteen teams competing in the 2007 NHRA Division Two Summit ET Finals, held October 4-6, 2007 at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Atlanta racers made a strong showing, finishing with 51 points, 11 points behind first place Bradenton Motorsports Park. OrlandoSpeed World and South Georgia tied for third at 43 points each.

A large group of racers enjoyed the post season Fall Spectacular put on by Atlanta Dragway. Saturday featured bracket action, and Sunday’s format switched to a Top Eliminator and a 7.0 heads-up index format. Hank Wilhelm, Woody Bryant, Jay Rhyne and D.A. Streber enjoyed Saturday wins. Michael Bruce and Steve Adams enjoyed the Sunday wins. Although he didn’t get a win, Larry “Pappy” Chance had the best weekend of his year, finishing runner-up on both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s first winners came from the Run for the Money event. Hank Wilhelm (Electronics allowed) and Toby Barnes(No Electronics) earned the purse in their respective classes. Wilhelm’s banner day began with a 5.170 on a 5.17 target, coupled with a .016 second reaction time. Barnes was also close to the target in his Ricki Blackwell owned ’76 Nova, which went down the track to a very close 8.443 on an 8.44 dial.

“Donkey Punch dominates,” stated Hank Wilhelm of Commerce, GA, the happy Super Pro winner. Wilhelm enjoyed taking out the newly crowned Super Pro champion, Thomas Bell, with a stellar .001 react and a .01 over 5.177 at 130.45mph posted in his ’96 Ed Quay dragster. Bell’s Toccoa, GA based ’05Undercover dragster made a decent pass, carding a 4.69 at 146.77mph (4.67target). Bell was rendered speechless by this turn of events. The Wilhelm family has enjoyed a great year at the track, with son Hank winning two Summit ET events, and dad Marty winning Super Pro in the muscle car race and finishing runner up in the Snap On Tools Day at the Races event. Hired gun John Smith (’72 Chevelle – Bowersville, GA) was lone semi-finalist.

By the time the Pro semi-finals rolled around, it was a battle of the pony cars, featuring three Camaros and a Mustang GT. Woody Bryant from Bowman, GA enjoyed the Pro win with his’82 Camaro, getting a break when Larry Chance from Canton, GA scrubbed a little ET away from his car near the finish line. Bryant crossed the win stripe first by.0015 seconds, running a close 7.542 at 91.58mph (7.53 dial). Chance’s ’68 Camaro posted a 6.61 at 102.81mph (6.57 dial). This was Chance’s first final round of the 2007 season. After the event, he said “I lifted just a little at the finish. I should have just let the car win.” He still got to enjoy the privilege of buying dinner for his group of friends, the Hickory Flat Heavys. Wesley Tucker, who won a few weeks ago with his Lawrenceville, GA based ’68 Camaro, finished in the semi-final round, along with Tim Polnaszek (’84 MustangGT – Nicholson, GA).

“It doesn’t matter what I do. I can’t seem to beat that car!” exclaimed Harold Wilson of Winder, GA, who finished the day in the Sportsman runner-up spot. D.A. Streber from Greenville, SC won Sportsman with the slowest car on the grounds, an ’02 Hyundai. It posted a 20.01 at 68.02mph (19.92 dial), and was actually the second car across the finish line stripe. However, Wilson’s ’74 Nova went just a bit too quick at 13.40 and 96.49mph (13.43 target) for the breakout loss. Mike Armstrong (’78 Buick wagon – Lawrenceville, GA) was the semi-final finisher. Seeing that Wilson was going to take the finish line first, and also sensing Wilson was going to break out (run quicker than his posted dial-in time), Streber tapped the brakes in his machine just prior to the finish to make sure he wouldn’t break out. “About driving the finish line in slow cars; you can’t practice it, and you can’t teach it,” said Streber.

“I’ve got some gas money for next weekend now,” said many time Motorcycle champion “Jay Bird” Rhyne after taking the win with his trusty ’81 Kawasaki. The Athens, GA racer ran close to the 12.24 second mark all day, and enjoyed taking the final round win with a 12.27 at 97.65mph (12.24 dial). His opponent, Jimmy “Cha Cha” Heisler from Woodstock, came into the event without the luxury of even making a time run. However, Heisler’s experience paid off with an eventual final round berth. Unfortunately for Heisler, his ’00 ZX6R fell off the number, posting a 10.43 at 127.99mph (10.34dial). Paul Cavanaugh (’02 Hayabusa – Loganville, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without the love and support of my wife Eeman (who was at work)”, said Heisler. Eeman also races frequently in Motorcycle class.

On Sunday, two classes were contested, a Top Eliminator and a 7.0 Heads Up class. In Top Eliminator, the Footbrake and the Electronics allowed cars were kept separate until the final round. Prior to eliminations, a Run for the Money session was held. Brad Howard from Gainesville, GA took home the 50/50 purse with his ’03 Miller dragster, courtesy of a 4.878 on his 4.87dial.

Covington, GA racer Michael Bruce did not let up one bit for the Top Eliminator final, even though he knew he was running a Footbrake car. Bruce’s ’99 Worthy dragster left a perfect .000 second reaction time on the clocks en route to a 5.13 at 136.18mph(5.11 dial). Larry “Pappy” Chance took a shot at the tree, and barely missed the mark with a -.017 second red light. His car, however, was near perfect with a 6.572 at 106.72mph (6.57 target). Chance has been working numerous bugs out of his car all year, and the hard work paid off with a nearly flawless weekend. His racing friends, the Hickory Flat Heavys, were also clearly looking forward to yet another steak dinner. The semi-final finishers were Matt Ward (’69Camaro – Dallas, GA) and Mark Milford (Horton Homes backed ’02 Racecraft dragster – Canon, GA). The quarterfinal finishers were George Peters (’70 Cutlass – Lawrenceville, GA), Bubba Rich (Marty Wilhelm owned ’70 Corvette – Gainesville, GA) and Don Brown Sr (’03 Spitzer dragster – Buford, GA). Michael Bruce thanked all the people who helped with his victory; his dad, Randy, wife Dana, son Ryan, Ronnie and Jeff Wilkerson (engine), Uncle Barry, Tommy Motes, JD Reid, Papa John Clifton and all his friends.

The 7.0 index class was popular, featuring a fixed 7.0 second index time, with breakout rules applying. Steve Adams from Buford, GA was amped after his final round victory against “John Boy” Smith’s Horton Homes sponsored’72 Chevelle. Immediately after the burnout, Smith heard something go sour in his engine, so he staged quickly in hopes that Adams would gored, and then shut his engine off rather than risk any further damage when the green lights were illuminated. Adams was not deterred, and the .009 second reaction time his ’78 Malibu wagon posted left very little room for improvement in the that department. At the halfway point on the track, Adams could see Smith was not coming, so he lifted off the throttle and coasted to a winning 7.84 at only 66.46mph on the 7.0 index. James Noel (’78 Fairmont – Seneca, SC) was the solo semi-finalist. Adams was happy the eliminations were over, as he ran out of both fuel and cooling water. He thanked his wife Elkefor all her support with his racing, and also thanked Ronnie and Jeff Wilkerson for a great engine. Smith thanked his car owner Max King and then added, “I’m not about to tear another man’s car up.”

KJ Battles to the 11th Starting Spot in Richmond

KJ Battles to the 11th Starting Spot in Richmond

The final qualifying sheet for the Torco Race Fuels Nationals in Richmond shows that Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Cobalt in the 11th position based on his 6.681-second, 206.61 mph pass from Saturday morning. However, these simple statistics do not show the tremendous effort the team put forth in securing their spot in Sunday’s final eliminations field, with a last minute engine change between rounds on Saturday. In addition, they do not show the championship implications involved in his first round match-up with rival Allen Johnson, whom Kurt is looking to overtake in this final event of the first round of the NHRA playoffs.

However, just as he has in the week leading up to this crucial race, KJ has kept matters in perspective, looking simply at doing whatever is necessary to get the job done.

“We had said after the Dallas race that if we were to face either (fourth place Coughlin) Jeggie or Allen in the first round in Richmond, it could potentially work in our favor. Although we ran well enough to qualify, we’ve not been up to speed with the performance that this ACDelco Cobalt has been running of late. We had some parts breakage last night, the extent of which did not surface until this morning’s run, forcing us to quickly swap engines between rounds, after which we didn’t make it down the track in the afternoon.

“At times like these, it’s best to take a step back and see exactly where you need to be, determining what went wrong, and what we need to do to fix it. For example, I had .027 and .017 lights on my last runs, which, after struggling in the last two races, allows us to focus our efforts on getting the race car down the race track.

“There’s a lot on the line tomorrow, so we’re going to dig down deep. We have about twenty hours to get this car turned around, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it.”

BAZEMORE RACES MATCO RAIL TO NO. 4 SPOT AT RICHMOND

PETERSBURG, Va. (Oct. 6, 2007) – Whit Bazemore raced his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 4 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park as he looks to sneak into the final spot in the Countdown to One. The 20-time NHRA winner clocked a qualifying-best run of 4.574-seconds to finish fourth in the 16-car order.

Bazemore entered the final day of qualifying for the Richmond event ranked second in the Top Fuel order after clocking a pass of 4.574-seconds on Friday’s only attempt. The Matco Tools team stayed consistent on Saturday’s first qualifying effort. The Bend, Ore. resident drove to run of 4.603 seconds at 320.74 mph under cloudy skies at V.M.P. Bazemore then raced the Matco-backed rail to a solid run of 4.576 at 320.89 to finish fourth in the field. It was the third quickest run of the session. Bazemore was the only driver to post 320 mph speeds on all three qualifying attempts. This is the sixth time that he has qualified fourth this season.

“We’re really happy,” Bazemore said. “We have a good, consistent race car. We went down the track on all three runs and ran well. Sometimes that’s more important than having low E.T. We have to win the race to maintain our championship dreams. Tomorrow we’re going to come here and do what we know how to do and that’s win.”

Bazemore will match-up against Melanie Troxel when the first round of eliminations begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. He is 1-0 versus her this season. ESPN2 will televise three hours of final eliminations coverage from the Second annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at 7 p.m. (ET) on Oct. 7.

SGMP - Simply The Best

Just as in the Olympics with the torch being passed for each runner to continue its progression, the time has come to pass along South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP). On Monday Oct 1, 2007, Larry Dean passed the torch of his dream to Rowland and Kim Wood who will continue to expand the nationally known racing facility.

Very well known and respected in the drag racing community and owner of CSR Performance Products, Rowland Wood responded, "I have always wanted to own a race track. There is not a single facility anywhere with this much potential. And I have been to all of them"

In 2002, Larry Dean had a vision for a racing facility in South Georgia. He did not just want a race track, but a first class race complex that would bring quality race programs from all over the country. There were many obstacles along the way the first being a proper location. Cook County stepped to the plate approving a location just north of Cecil for the facility of what would be South Georgia Motorsports Park and what a remarkable facility that dream would become.

Shortly after only a few events Dean's son Shad found himself managing the track. With limited knowledge of the racing business, Shad brought in numerous events that exposed the world to South Georgia. Being modest, Shad gives the credit to Richard Hall, Thomas Dickerson, Kelly Dasher and many more dedicated folks plus all the racers who have competed there.

Quickly becoming one of the most talked about tracks in the country, the SGMP speedway has been on countless televised races. Race teams in NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA and others can often be seen testing their programs in Cecil. Just a few weeks ago on national TV, George Brice told one of his star riders, Peggy Liewellyn to ride her Pro Stock bike just as she had at SGMP.
It must have worked given that she won big in Texas. It should also not be underplayed of the thousands of sportsman racers who look forward to racing at SGMP each year.

Had it not been for the diligent comment from Larry Dean, his son Shad and the Dean Family, South Georgia Motorsports Park would have never happened. With their back ground in construction and enlisting talents from the late Don Reames, one must believe that no one else could have created the facility to the primer motorsports facility that it is.

Rowland and Kim Wood are extremely involved in drag racing. As a drag racer and visionary, the new owners of SGMP saw a need for quality racing products. With each product labeled "Simply the Best", The Wood's built 'CSR' to a nationally recognized line of racing products. As the new owners of South Georgia Motorsports Park one can expect the Wood's to continue that
same "Simply the Best" mind set to both the drag strip as well as the speedway.

From a very committed involvement with the Jr Dragster program to their son Jason's involvement in research and development as well as racing Top Sportsman and daughter Linsey's successful first season in Top Alcohol Dragster, the entire Wood family live and breath racing. While most of the Wood family experience revolves around drag racing, the racers and fans of the speedway need not worry about being neglected. "We plan to grow both racing programs from the seeds that have been planted by the Dean family" stated Wood. "SGMP needs both to be successful"

So what can one expect to see with the Wood's at the helm ? The short answer is more events on both tracks with the first event to be added being 'Racer Appreciation Day' on November 1st. The first Saturday in November will start with a full bracket race then closing the night with the McDonald's Super Series with details soon to follow.

The racing community will forever be indebted to Larry and Shan Dean for their commitment of countless time, money and effort to bring all us fans of motorsports, the nicest facility in the south. We will remain indebted for placing it in the trusting hands of Rowland and Kim Wood who will make it, Simply the Best!

BELL WINS BACKTO BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS, FORRESTER SEALS PRO CHAMPIONSHIP WITH WIN

EVENT: Final Summit ET points event and Kingof the Track race at Atlanta Dragway in 2007

by Tim Glover

(Commerce,GA – September 22) The final Atlanta Dragway Summit ET Series pointsevent was blessed with great weather and enjoyed by many racers. In addition tothe final points event, the annual NHRA King of the Track event offered extra awards for the winners. Only two of the six championships were sealed prior to this event, and some of the other four were too close for comfort for the winners. All the points leaders coming into this last race did leave the event crowned as 2007 Atlanta Dragway Track Champion, and two of them even took home tonight’s event win as well.

Congratulations go to all the 2007 Atlanta Dragway track champions. The winners are: Thomas Bell (Super Pro –Toccoa, GA), Dickey Forrester (Pro – Hickory Flat, GA), Mel Abney (Sportsman –Cumming, GA), Ryan Coover (Motorcycle – Cartersville, GA), Dylan Hutchins (8-12Jr Dragster – Monroe, GA) and JackieLastinger (13-17 Jr Dragster – Lilburn, GA).

At the end of the Summit ET race, the annual NHRA King of the Track event was also held, where the four “big car” winners held a runoff to see who could lay down the best package (amount of time off of perfect for a single pass). All four contestants received a King of the Track hat, and the King of the Track winner, Keith Fuller, also received a coveted“Wally” trophy. Fuller (’96 Dragster, Lawrenceville, GA) had a 0.030 secondpackage, Jay “Bird” Rhyne (’81 Kawasaki, Athens, GA) put down a 0.069 second package (the exact same package as he did in the 2006 King of the Track event),Dickey Forrester (’67 Camaro, Hickory Flat, GA) was a little further off with a0.073 second package, and Scott Reynolds (’05 Chevy pickup, Cartersville, GA)finished the event with a 0.090 second package. For the first time, all four King of the Track contestants broke out (ran quicker than their estimated time)on their passes, with Fuller breaking out the least.

Super Pro winner Keith Fuller had a banner day at the track with his ’96 dragster, taking the win stripe a mere eleven thousandths of a second ahead of Bob Lutz’s Iva, SC based Mopar. Fuller posted a 5.61 at 122.47mph (5.59 target), and Lutz was off just a little more with a 7.42 at 90.46mph (7.39 dial). Paul Dooley (’80 Monza – Gainesville, GA) and Tommy Motes (’92 Undercover dragster – Loganville, GA) were the semi-finalist purse winners. Thomas Bell, who was also the 2006 track champ, had a 30 point lead over Wayne Brooks coming in to this event, but Brooks made an exciting finish, closing the gap to 10 (one round win) by the end (580 forBell to Brooks’ 570).

Pro winner Dickey Forrester from Hickory Flat, GA came in 40 points ahead of Jacob Rutledge of Hoschton, GA. Rutledge,a multiple time former track champion did not make it easy, as both took the points fight all the way to the final, where Forrester defeated Rutledge, both for the event and the season. The final points tally was Forrester – 720 and Rutledge – 670. Forrester’s ’67 Camaro was nearly perfect in the final, posting a 6.487 at 106.41mph for the win (6.48 dial-in). Rutledge took just a little too much stripe at the finish line, breaking out with a 7.471 at 92.70mph (7.48dial). Kim Ellington (’81 Camaro – Conyers, GA) was the lone semi-finalist. Forrester almost won the 2006 Pro championship, but lost inthe runoff race after tying good friend Chris Carlile in the points.

Long time Sportsman racer Scott Reynolds from Cartersville, GA has enjoyed competing in two classes simultaneously this year. He scored theSportsman win this evening with his tow truck, a 2005 Chevy Silverado, against young Allen Long from Ballground, GA. Reynolds had the better reaction time in the final, and turned it into a win light witha 10.843 at 59.40 mph (10.79 dial). Long, who won the 13-17 year old Jr Dragster class at the final 2006 Summit event, crossed the finish line moments later with a 10.55 at 66.19mph in his truck (10.45 dial). The semi-finalists were Steve Wagner (’03 Neon – Jefferson, GA) and Adam Blalock (’88 Mustang – Eastanollee, GA). The newly crowned Sportsman champion, Mel Abney from Cumming, GA was also the 2003 champ. Abney came into tonight’s event with a lock on thechampionship, and finished the season with 590 points, 70 ahead of Buford, GA racer John Oliver (who won the final Summit ET event in 2006 with his ’99 Durango).

Many time Motorcycle track champion “Jay Bird” Rhyne from Athens, GA may not have won the 2007 track championship, but he did have the pleasure of taking the final round win with his trusty ’81Kawasaki against the newly crowned champion, Ryan Coover (’01 Honda –Cartersville, GA). Although Rhyne broke out a little, carding a 7.70 at87.36mph (7.72 dial), Coover’s red light start determined the outcome. Cooverwent on to a 6.10 at 115.65mph (6.18 dial). Tim Sutton (’71 Suzuki - Gainesville, GA) ended his day in the semi-final round. Coover came into the day with the points lead, and left with 330 points, 70 ahead of Jay Rhyne.

Twelve year old Dylan Hutchins of Monroe, GA had a fantastic second half of the 2007 season in 8-12 Jr Dragster, taking the lead mid-season and ending the last race of the season with both a race win and the 2007 track championship. Hutchins defeated Dylan Kent (12 – Acworth, GA) in both the reaction time department and the finish line department, running a superb 8.912 at 72.35mph (8.91 dial). Kent was no slouch either, tightening the finish line up with an 8.909 at 73.69mph (8.90dial). Kent was also the runner up in the final race of the 2006 season. Brittney Helleman from Buford, GA was the solo semi-finalist. Hutchins finished with 560 points, 80 ahead of Chris Bowden, who led the early season points chase.

In what turned out to be a repeat of the previous Summit ET event, the final three players in 13-17 Jr Dragster were the same, as were the results. Blake Griffith (13 – Homer, GA) took the final round win light against a red-lighting Kelsey Lynn (13 – Marietta, GA). Griffith’s times were 9.25 at 70.77mph (9.16 target). Other than that, Lynn’s car was nearly flawless, posting a 7.989 at 82.66mph (7.97 dial). Ashley Riggs (16 – Madison, GA) was the semi-final trophy earner. Jackie Lastinger from Lilburn, GA ended her season with 520 points, with Kelsey Lynn coming in second at 480 points.

Jacky Jones' Ford Museum Photos

Recently, Jacky Jones invited Hubert Platt, Fred Simmons and Bob Beasley to his museum of Ford cars, parts, literature and more. I sure wish I would have been able to see it myself! I could be wrong, but it looks to me like Jacky has one of the largest Mustang collections in existence! Thanks to Fred Simmons for the photos and thanks to Jacky Jones for allowing GeorgiaDragRacing.com to show them! Click here for more photos.

Hayes Southeastern Mopar Meet at Atlanta Dragway

RACE DATE: September 8, 2007
FROM: Tim Glover

TALLEY NEARLY DOUBLES, MOPAR SWEEPS ALL BUT SUPER PRO AT HAYES MOPAR MEET 2007

(Commerce, GA - September 8) The 23rd annual Hayes Southeastern Mopar Meet 2007 was enjoyed again by thousands of spectators and several hundred racers. The racing action in six of the nine classes on the schedule (the other three were SRT and two Jr Dragster classes) featured a "Mopar versus the World" format, in which all makes of vehicles were welcome to compete. For the first time, Mopar took all the wins but one, and Dennis Brothers runner upped in that class (Super Pro) with his '71 Demon. "Big Earl" Talley nearly pulled off a double win with his '03 Dodge RAM, winning Sportsman and finishing runner-up in Diesel Bracket.

Two days of action were barely enough for Mopar fans to enjoy everything the event had to offer. Friday was a set up day for many vendors, followed by an open test and tune and grudge racing session beginning in the late afternoon. Saturday was the main event for participants.

Mopar Pro Stock racers Richie "The Kid" Stevens and Allen Johnson were on site, meeting and greeting the fans, signing autographs, posing for pictures and making passes down the track before they left for their next race. Les Shockley's "Super Shockwave" twin Pratt & Whitney jet engine powered truck wowed the crowd with flame throwing 200+ mph passes. The Freestyle Motocross Team featured three riders doing jumps and stunts, going over 30 feet high in the air between the ramps. There was even a radio controlled race car event set up next to the awards tent for the younger (and older also) fan's enjoyment.

Thirty eight class winners were awarded trophies in the Mopar Car Show, held on the grounds near the staging lanes. Warren Fulmer from Zephyr Hills, Fla. entered his ultra fast 11 second '03 SRT Neon in both the show and the race and was rewarded with a semi-final finish in the SRT Shootout. No Mopar car show is complete without a winged car, and Buford, Ga. resident Steve Stoke's '70 Superbird, powered by a 440 Super Commando engine, was a prime example. One of the cooler older model cars on display was Phyllis Gilbert's "Ole Blue" '33 Dodge. Just before the main race began, car show participants were invited to make a parade lap down the return road in front of the grandstands with their vehicles, giving fans in the stands a close up look of their machinery in motion.

The Hayes Wholesale Parts booth was located on the manufacturer's midway, which stretched down the track behind the grandstands for nearly a quarter mile. Many different Mopar parts, both new, used, and thoroughly used, were available for sale in the swap meet. Year One had a very sharp display of their restoration parts, including a restified 505 powered '69 Roadrunner
convertible. Goodmark industries had a project car featuring some of their restoration sheetmetal. Mopar Direct Connection brought a large display, including three different Hemi crate engines and a 440 Super Commando crate engine.

Dave Dunbar brought his Diesel Performance Motorsports Dynojet Chassis Dyno to the event again, giving free dyno pulls on a first come, first serve basis, courtesy of Hayes Family Dealerships.

Pritchett Tire sponsored the burnout contest again for 2007, where contestants attempted to create the biggest smokescreen possible with their vehicle. The Minnette family from Hiwassee, GA took another victory with their 5000 pound '76 Dodge Sportsman van, featuring a new ram air system and 3.55 rear gears. John Minette was the pilot this time, as his wife Dianne has retired from competition. Pritchett Tire awarded them four new tires for their efforts.

The Car Corral held many available-for-sale Mopars, including the '65 "Country Cuda" Plymouth Barracuda campaigned for nearly twenty years by Amos Martin. The car is conservatively set up for 6.70s in the eighth mile and 10.60s in the quarter mile course. He said there was over $50,000 invested, but he was selling it for $25,000. "I'm past 70 now. I need to let somebody else play with it now," Martin added.

Only one Mopar remained by the quarter-final round of Super Pro, but Dennis Brothers prevailed until the final with his Byrom, Ga. based '71 Demon. However, Bubba Rich from Gainesville, Ga. took the win with his '02 Firebird, courtesy of a 5.326 at 132.44mph pass (5.31 dial) after Brothers went just a bit too quick, breaking out with a 6.793 at 100.06mph (6.80
dial). John Smith ('72 Vega - Bowersville, GA) was the lone semi-finalist. Prior to their final round matchup, Rich told Brothers "If you're still here (in the final) in a door car, you deserve the Mopar bonus (awarded to winner and runner up if they are driving a Mopar product)". Brothers was OK with the runner up position, mentioning he did the same thing over the Memorial Day weekend earlier this season during the Southern Mopar Club event at Southeast Georgia Motorsports Park.

Five of the six cars remaining by the Pro quarter-final round were Mopars, ensuring a good day for them. Brad Bauman from New Smyrna Beach, Fla. bought his '69 Dodge Dart new, and began racing it in 1970. Bauman used his skills to help win, reacting with a telepathic .001 second time. His car fell off to an 11.40 at 118.49mph, but by then the race was his after Gerald Wright of Ballground, GA went red with a -.005 second time. Wright's "under construction" (it still needs painting) '71 Plymouth Scamp was otherwise right on the money, posting a 10.91 at 121.99mph (10.90 target). Dave Blevins ('70 Dodge Dart -Alpharetta, Ga.) won the semi-finalist portion of the purse. "Thanks to my crew, Hope, Jeff and Sarah," added Bauman.

Sportsman also featured an all Mopar final, with "Big Earl" Talley of Bowling Green, KY claiming victory with his '03 Dodge RAM truck. Because of his holeshot (a better reaction time) advantage, Talley was able to scrub off a bit of time at the big end of the track, carding the winning 13.42 at 97.46mph pass (13.31 dial). John Snapp from Conyers, Ga., broke out with his
'68 Charger, going 13.66 at 95.97mph (13.69 target). Snapp has raced his Charger in every Mopar show since 2000, when he began competing. Newly crowned Atlanta Dragway Sportsman champion Mel Abney ('67 Camaro - Cumming, Ga.) ended his day in the semi-final round. Talley won the Diesel Bracket Shootout in 2005, won Pro in 2006 (at the Mopar show), and has now added a Sportsman win to his resume in 2007. "I'm going to have to run Super Pro
here next year," Talley commented.

The 13-17 Jr Dragster final featured the same contestants and virtually identical elapsed times as the 2006 final, but different winners. A red light start determined the victory again, but this time "Mad Matt" Gillen of Gainesville, Ga. was the beneficiary of Chase Mullinax's too-quick react of -.013 seconds. Gillen was on his game with his Motivational Tubing car, carding a 7.935 at 83.36mph (7.90 dial), and Mullinax took the stripe with a virtually identical 7.936 second time at 81.87mph (7.90 dial) in his Buford, Ga. based racecar. Both Gillen and Mullinax celebrated their 16th birthday this week. Knowing that his car needed some tuning adjustments coming into first round, Gillen went ahead and made the changes, even though he was aware the changes could also hurt. However, his call was spot on, as he went 7.904 on a 7.90 dial for the first round win. Brittany "Glitterjaws" Harper (14 - Meansville, Ga.) and Jordan Thurmond (15 - Statham, Ga.) earned the semi-finalist trophies. This was Gillen's third final and second win in
three years. Gillen first thanked God. He then thanked Tim and Arlen from Motivational Tubing, Roy Whaley, and his dad. He then added that he missed his team mates Barry and Joshua Sisson.

Similar to the older final, the 8-12 year old Jr Dragster finalists were nearly wired together at the starting and the finish line. Wesley Mayfield (11 - Gainesville, Ga.) enjoyed winning with his brand new car, which posted an 8.978 at 71.52mph (8.96 dial). His opponent, Dylan Hutchins (12 - Monroe, Ga.) was close, but second across the stripe with an 8.975 at 71.11mph. Dylan Kent (12 - Acworth, Ga.) was the semi-final finisher. Hutchins' mom added with a smile that Wesley could also thank her for getting the dial-in time on Dylan's car wrong. Mayfield's dad then added, "I got lucky one time and dialed ours right." Hutchins is currently the 8-12 points leader in Atlanta Dragway's weekly Summit ET Series program.

Kevin Meredith from Bowling Green, KY earned bragging rights in the DHRA (Diesel Hot Rod Association) Pro-Street Diesel class after defeating Micky Davis of Pelham, Ga courtesy of a better reaction time. Making it even more exciting was their finish was one of the fastest and closest of all the classes contested. Although Davis' '96 Dodge RAM was perfect on the 10.50
index with a 10.500 elapsed time (at 125.13mph), he crossed the top end stripe a mere .006 seconds behind Meredith's '01 "Caged Fury" '01 Dodge RAM. Meredith's machine was also close to the index with a 10.525 at 121.03mph. Jimmy Dale Smith ('98 Dodge RAM - Danville, KY).

The DHRA Quick Diesel class returned for 2007, with its 12.00 second index. Jim "Lucky Dog" Layden from Glenwood City, Wisconsin had to settle for runner up in the 2006 race because he was the second person across the finish line. He was second across the win stripe again in 2007, but this time it was because he "treed" opponent Matt Wells Jr ('94 Dodge RAM 2500 -
Middleburg, Fla.) at the starting line with a better reaction time, which helped cause Wells to break out with an 11.965 at 113.03mph. Layden posted the winning time of 12.08 at 113.92mph with his '94 Dodge RAM, which he drives to the racetrack. Bruce Block ('04 Dodge RAM - White Pigeon, MI) ended his day in the semi-final round.

The DPM (Diesel Performance Motorsports) Diesel Shootout features street driven diesel trucks that are still very quick. K.J. "El Destructo" Kitchens from Bowling Green, KY enjoyed taking the top spot with his '06 Dodge RAM against his neighbor, "Big Earl" Talley, also from Bowling Green. The DHRA announcer exclaimed, "He's a bracket racing machine!" This win was Kitchens' fourth Diesel Shootout win in a row. Kitchens' "El Destructo" tag came from a past event where three of the four trucks Kitchens was racing experienced dramatic failures, even though his truck owner said they were not his fault. Talley, who claimed the Sportsman win a few minutes earlier, almost doubled up with his '03 Dodge RAM, but a slightly tardier reaction time put him .005 seconds behind Kitchens at the finish line with a 13.304 at 98.80mph (13.28
dial). Kitchens winning ET was 13.051 at 99.70mph (13.02 target). Joel Greathouse ('06 Dodge RAM - Oakland, KY) was the semi-final finisher.

The SRT Shootout featured some really fast factory iron. Chris Moore from Greenville, SC recently purchased his Hemi powered SRT-8 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and came to the Mopar show just to see what was happening. After arriving, he got the bug to try his machine out on the track, so he had to go to a nearby outlet store and purchase the required long pants. He then rented a helmet, jumped in, and proceeded to win. Moore is not a complete stranger to going fast, as he claims several Outlaw Pro motorcycle titles, and his other car is a supercharged '99 Dodge Viper GTS. Moore met Jeff Wagner ('03 Dodge Neon - Jefferson, Ga.) in the final, and used a slightly better react coupled with a .01 over 13.591 at 87.91mph (13.58 dial) to defeat Wagner's 13.43 at 105.70mph (13.23 dial). In the 2006 event, Wagner was one of the SRT semi-finalists, and for 2007, Warren Fulmer ('03 Neon - Zephyr Hills, Fla.) got to claim the semi-final finisher "honors".

A special thanks also goes to the Lake City Cruisers and the North Georgia Mopar Club for all their help in making the 23rd annual Hayes Southeastern Mopar Meet 2007 a success.

BELL DOMINATES SUPER PRO, SECOND GENERATION RACER WESLEY TUCKER WINS PRO, ABNEY SEALS SPORTSMAN CHAMPIONSHIP WITH FOURTH FINAL IN FIVE EVENTS

RACE DATE: September 1, 2007
EVENT: Summit Snap-On event at Atlanta Dragway in 2007
by Tim Glover

(Commerce, GA - September 1) Former Sportsman champ (2003) Mel Abney sealed the deal in the 2007 Sportsman points chase with his fourth final round appearance (three wins) in the past five Summit ET Series events. Thomas Bell enjoyed running five dead-on passes en route to the Super Pro win.

Toccoa, GA racer Thomas Bell had a tremendous day in Super Pro. Prior to the final, Bell ran three 4.700 second passes (4.70 dial) with his '05 Undercover dragster, and made them even better with a .002, a .003 and a .019 react. He then ran a 4.699 on a 4.69 dial, and backed that up with a final round winning 4.704 at 141.58mph (4.70 dial). Topping it all off was another stellar final round reaction time of .002 seconds. Bell's final round opponent was Snap-On Tools representative Bobby Hattaway. Hattaway's Cleveland, GA based '96 Undercover dragster was also on target, running a 5.385 at 126.46mph (5.38 dial). Bell made sure to thank his crewman Freddie Lewis for all the help. Bell came from fourth in the points to a slim lead, but not near enough to clinch the championship, with one Snap-On / Summit ET Series points event left. Lloyd Kaylor, who won the previous Summit event at Atlanta Dragway, finished his day in the semi-final round.

Earlier this season, Wesley Tucker, a second generation racer from Lawrenceville, GA, told Trent (the Atlanta Dragway race announcer) "I've got a win coming this year." Tucker used up almost every bit of his starting line holeshot advantage (.032 seconds) to take the Pro victory against another experienced racer, Jessie Wilson ('70 Nova - Tallapoosa, GA). Tucker's 7.325 at 88.16mph (7.30 dial) took his first ever Atlanta Dragway win stripe a mere .008 seconds in front of Wilson, whose car went dead-on with a 7.331 at 94.26mph (7.33 dial). Tucker has been racing on the National and Divisional level with his '68 Camaro, and took a break this season,
choosing to race closer to home. Jessie Wilson's wife, Sue, came to the payout window to collect his runner-up winnings and added with a smile, "This is a great present. It's our 34th anniversary." Bill Boomhower ('65 Belvedere - Walhalla, SC) was the lone semi-finalist.

Sportsman winner D.A. Streber campaigns virtually the slowest car on the grounds (even slower than the vast majority of Jr Dragster racers), an '02 Hyundai. The beauty of bracket racing is that speed isn't everything, which Streber demonstrated by earning his third win of the season against the newly crowned Sportsman champion, Mel Abney of Cumming, GA. Abney, who also
won the championship in 2003, misjudged the finish line with his '67 Camaro, posting an 8.44 at an off pace 77.79mph (8.35 dial). Streber's mount put the winning 12.49 at 56.50mph on the scoreboards (12.43 target). Abney, who was in his fourth final in the last five events (with three wins), was very happy to clinch the 2007 Sportsman championship with only one event
remaining. John Oliver ('99 Durango - Buford, GA) maintained his second place spot in the points with a semi-final round finish. The other semi-finalist was Scott Reynolds ('93 Crown Victoria - Cartersville, GA).

Bailey Denton from McDonough, GA turned thirteen years old this season and will graduate to the older class next season. With only one younger event left, she earned the 8-12 Jr Dragster win in style with a dead-on 8.905 at 73.49mph (8.90 dial). Denton's starting line reaction time advantage caused Wesley Mayfield (11 - Gainesville, GA) to push his car just a touch too quick. Mayfield actually crossed the big end stripe .009 seconds in front of Denton, but unfortunately for Mayfield his elapsed time was too quick, breaking out with an 8.896 at 72.49mph (8.93 goal). Dylan Hutchins (12 - Monroe, GA) increased his 8-12 Jr Dragster points lead with a semi-final
round appearance.

Homer, GA racer Blake Griffith (13 - Homer, GA) ended his day on a high note in 13-17 Jr Dragster action. Griffith put down a convincing .01 over 9.146 at 72.09mph (9.13 dial) on the boards for the win. Kelsey Lynn (13 - Marietta, GA) also went .01 over her dial with a 7.941 at 82.87mph (7.93 dial), but her later reaction time made the pass only good for the runner up
position. Ashley Riggs (16 - Madison, GA) earned the semi-finalist trophy for her efforts.

Sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), Atlanta Dragway is located just off I-85 at Exit 149 in the Banks Crossing area of Commerce, Georgia. Information on all 2007 events may be obtained by calling the track office (706-335-2301) or logging on to

HUBINETTE AND COOK WOW CROWDS WITH DRIFTING EXHIBITION, WOHLER HAS QUICKEST AND FASTEST STREET LEGAL CAR ON GROUNDS AT TUNERFEST SHOOTOUT

FROM: Tim Glover
EVENT: Tunerfest event at Atlanta Dragway in 2007

(Commerce, GA - August 25) Thousands of spectators enjoyed the fourth annual Tunerfest Shootout, held at Atlanta Dragway and presented by Mopar and ImportAtlanta.com. Fans had many different activities to choose from, including watching Test and Tune cars on the racetrack, drifting exhibitions by Mopar racers Chris Cook and Samuel Hubinette, a large Car Show, dyno tuning on a chassis dynamometer, a manufacturer's midway and much more.

The star attractions were the Mopar Team Nuformz drifting cars driven by Samuel "Crazy Swede" Hubinette and Chris Cook for the drifting exhibition. Although some of us may have been detained by authorities in the past for an activity similar to "drifting", those efforts pale in comparison to the skill levels displayed by Hubinette and Cook. While the cars appeared to be
out of control, sliding sideways with smoke boiling off the tires, the drivers were actually in complete charge, placing the cars precisely where they wanted them. Hubinette was piloting a modified 2007 Charger which featured a Paxton supercharged 392 Hemi, carbon fiber body, trick suspension with 19 inch front wheels and 18 inch rears and a lot of other modifications. Cook, whose day job is coaching NASCAR and Busch drivers how to compete on road courses, wheeled a former Mopar prototype 2005 Copperhead Viper. Both cars shredded several sets of BF Goodrich radials during the demonstrations. A young fan, Sebastian Edge, exclaimed, "Mom, I wish your car was in there!" His mom drives a modified '03 Mitsubishi Galant. Four lucky fans did win the chance to ride along with Hubinette and Cook. They were Josh Johns, Drew Lourtsema from Gainesville, GA, Dustin Johnson and a nervous Richard Scott of Anderson, SC.

The car show attracted a lot of visitors, with many different types of vehicles, ranging from Maseratis to an in-progress Ranger lowrider. Craig Butler from Thomson, GA enjoyed winning several awards with his '97 Viper, including Best Mopar. A Freightliner "pickup" was one of the larger attractions. Sound systems dominated some areas of the competition, with high output speakers surrounded by immaculately prepared machines. Steve Flynn's Detail Products supplied many of the competitors with the supplies they needed to win. Team Carma brought two very interesting cars to display. One was a street legal Indy car powered by a mostly stock 3.5 liter Chrysler V6 engine, supplying about 270 ponies through a 1900 pound chassis. The
other was a 1991 BMW V12, which looked a lot newer than it really was.

Aftermarket parts, custom wheels, detailing supplies and other high performance merchandise was availably for purchase all around the car show area. A DJ was on hand playing music to keep everyone entertained while they enjoyed the various activities.

Mike Wohler brought his '97 Eclipse to the track to do some more tuning, hoping to get it into the high eight second range by day's end. He didn't make it, but still succeeded in becoming the quickest and fastest street legal car on the grounds, turning in a 9.756 second pass at 144.84mph. A fouled spark plug prevented an even quicker pass later in the day. Richard Lohr of Doraville, GA came to the track just to see what his '92 Civic would do, and was rewarded handsomely when he won the Best Reaction Time competition with a 0.001 second react. "Turbo Dave" Batson does engine swaps and tuning for Mainstream Performance in Powder Springs, and demonstrated his skill by pushing his '95 Tacoma to an 11.494 second pass at 117.81mph. Of course a big turbocharger attached to a six cylinder 3.0 liter 2JZ Supra engine didn't exactly hurt his chances. Batson's machine won the Closest to 11 Second award. Matthew Cunningham ('03 EVO - Cumming, GA) won Closest to 12 with a 12.010 second pass, Brandon Finley ('03 EVO - Seneca, SC) got closest to 13 seconds with a 13.107 pass, and Anthony Parman ('03 Cobra - Kennesaw, GA) was closest of all to the 14 second mark with a 14.001 second pass. Although he didn't win any awards, Osiel Cienos from Lawrenceville, GA had a lot of fun with what was probably the oldest street legal car on the track, a mostly stock 1980 Corolla which posted 18.50s at around 79mph. Local racer Ed Nalley enjoyed uncorking his Vega race car for the quarter mile course, running 9.43 seconds at 140.85mph.

D and D Dynos brought their chassis dynamometer to the track to allow anyone to see what kind of power their car really put to the ground. Many contestants enjoyed watching their car perform at full throttle, and by the end of the event, Jack Winter's 2006 Viper with a stock 500hp engine managed to put the top numbers of the day, 422 horsepower and 435 foot pounds of torque, through the rear wheels.

Sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), Atlanta Dragway is located just off I-85 at Exit 149 in the Banks Crossing area of Commerce, Georgia. FATHER AND SON WIN MOTORCYCLE TWO DAYS IN A ROW, BRYANT WINS FIRST RACE IN SNAP ON TOOLS DAY AT THE RACES

FROM: Tim Glover
EVENT: Snap-On Tools Day at the Races at Atlanta Dragway in 2007

(Commerce, GA - August 19) In spite of the heat, hundreds of Snap-On Tools customers enjoyed the 2007 edition of the Snap-On Tools Day at the Races. Snap On Tools representatives gave their customers free passes to either race or watch their friends race at Atlanta Dragway. They also got the chance to look at many of the latest Snap On Tools on display in the Snap On
booth, including their new three bay "war wagon".

Daryl Johnsey won the Snap On Motorcycle class approximately 20 hours after his stepson, Allen Hitt, won the Atlanta Dragway NHRA National Dragster Challenge event. Woody Bryant enjoyed his first ever bracket racing win with a dead-on pass in Pro class.

The lucky top finishing racers in each class were awarded various Snap On Tools for their efforts. Prizes included a Snap On roll away base cabinet for the Super Pro and Pro winners, a Snap On floor jack for the Motorcycle winner, Snap On cordless impact wrenches, Snap On creepers and many other fine tools.

Bill Rimmer, Jr brought his Outlaw '92 Trans Am to make exhibition passes. The twin turbocharged machine wowed spectators with a 7.43 second pass at 198.61mph and another 7.44 second pass. Rimmer was also preparing his car for the upcoming World Street Nationals.

Justin Knott was the first winner of the day, winning the Burnout Contest. Knott smoked up the entire starting line with his '04 Chevy 2500 Duramax powered truck.

"I'm out of retirement. I had to before Donny Jr used up all my parts," exclaimed Super Pro winner Don Brown Sr from Buford, GA. Brown met Commerce, GA racer Marty "John Force Jr." Wiles in the final round, and took the win stripe with his '03 Spitzer dragster by a mere .022 seconds before Wiles. Wiles' '23 Altered had been on the mark all day, running between 5.08 and 5.10 seconds, but unfortunately it slowed a bit in the final to a 5.13. Wiles' long smoky burnouts were great crowd pleasers (which is why he earned the nickname John Force Jr). Brown's machine posted a 5.09 at 135.08mph (5.08 dial). Wilhelm saw a 5.13 at 132.90mph (5.10 dial) on the scoreboards. Brown thanked his grandson Ryan, Celeste and Gary Peebles, and Michael Dobbs. "I had a really good time. I want to thank God, my wife Linda and
Hank," added Wiles. Thomas Bell ('05 Undercover dragster - Toccoa, GA) and Travis Bryant ('67 Camaro - Bowman, GA) were the semi-final prize winners.

Another member of the Bryant family enjoyed a great day at the races. Woody Bryant, also from Bowman, GA won his first bracket race, in Pro class, with his '82 Camaro. Bryant received the instant win when his opponent, first time racer Dwight Ellis ('88 Mustang - Washington, GA), turned on the big red foul bulb at the starting line. Ellis was thrilled he made it that far
in his first race, and definitely improved the chances of someone seeing the for sale sign in the window of his car. He thanked his Snap on rep, Vonne Price, for giving him the entry. Knowing he already had the win, Bryant was even more thrilled to see his time slip, a dead-on 12.030 at 110.31mph (12.03 dial). Bryant thanked his wife Paula, Wade Bryant and engine builder David Beatenbough for all their help. David Trimble ('72 Ventura II - Lilburn, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

Motorcycle winner Daryl Johnsey enjoyed winning Motorcycle class less than 20 hours after his stepson, Allen Hitt won the Motorcycle NHRA National Dragster Challenge during Saturday's Summit event. Johnsey's '82 Kawasaki ZRX750 was close to the mark, running a breakout 12.29 at 105.68mph (12.32 dial), but the infraction was the lesser one after Stanley Russell of Gray, GA turned on the bright red foul bulb with a too quick reaction time. His '04 Suzuki GSXR1000 carded a 10.39 at 128.42mph (10.35 target). Jimmy "Cha Cha" Heisler ('00 Ninja - Woodstock, GA) and Zach Hulsey ('00 Suzuki - Clermont, GA) ended the day in the semi-final round. "My bike wasn't the oldest one here, but it was close," added Johnsey. Johnsey may well have been the oldest rider, however. "If a red light got me this (Snap On cordless impact wrench), I'm good. We had a great time," said Russell.

ABNEY WINS THIRD RACE IN FOUR EVENTS, RAMPLEY SCORES PERFECT RUN, HITT WINS THE MOTORCYCLE NHRA NATIONAL DRAGSTER CHALLENGE

FROM: Tim Glover
EVENT: Summit Snap-On event at Atlanta Dragway in 2007

(Commerce, GA - August 18) Former Sportsman champ Mel Abney furthered his lead in the 2007 Sportsman points series with his third win in just four events. Super Pro racer Joe Rampley bought his '86 Regal a few months ago, and entered just his fifth event today. He was rewarded with his first ever perfect run (.000 reaction time and 5.280 on a 5.28 dial) during round two, and then went on to a semi-final finish. "I've been looking for that 25 years," added the happy Rampley. Motorcycle racer Allen Hitt enjoyed winning his first National Dragster Challenge event, in just his second attempt.

Former Super Pro track champion Lloyd Kaylor experienced a broken torque converter in his dragster recently, so he brought out his faithful '87 Regal to race. The Winder, GA based car performed almost flawlessly, carrying him to the Super Pro win against "John Boy" Smith from Bowersville, GA. Kaylor was first off the mark with a .015 second react, and then crossed the win stripe with a dead-on 7.626 at 87.85mph. Smith was also dead-on, running 6.284 at 107.39mph (6.28 dial), but an otherwise good .024 react relegated him to runner up. Recent Georgia transplant Walt Mesik ('04 Miller dragster - Madison, GA) and Joe Rampley ('86 Regal - Gainesville, GA) finished in the semi-final round. "I brought the car because the dragster broke. However, it might not take that much of an excuse to bring it back again," added Kaylor.

"This win is for Ray and Elizabeth Brown," stated Pro winner Chris Carlile after the race. The former track champion actually crossed the big end stripe with his Canton, GA based '69 Camaro behind Bruce Wilson's '85 S-10 pickup, but got the win after Wilson broke out ever so slightly with a 7.413 at 89.62mph (7.42 target). Carlile's machine carded a 6.47 at 107.93mph
(6.45 dial). Carlile has only been to the track three times in 2007. Wilson's truck was sporting the engine that carried him to the 2001 NHRA Division Two ET finals win (it was in a '67 El Camino at that time). Roger Kobos ('78 Monte Carlo - Covington, GA) and Dickey Forrester ('67 Camaro - Hickory Flat, GA) were the semi-final pair.

Mel Abney from Cumming, GA has been on a tear in Sportsman, and further increased his points lead with his third victory in the past four events. Seeing he had some reaction time advantage over his final round opponent Scott Preves, Abney tapped the brakes on the top end a bit to slow his '67 Camaro to an 8.53 at 82.92mph (8.48 dial). Preves broke out with a 10.84 at 62.00mph (10.86 dial) in his Monroe, GA based '93 Lumina trying to stay ahead of Abney. Adam Blalock ('90 Mustang - Eastanolee, GA) and Scott Reynolds ('05 Chevy truck - Cartersville, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round. "I really enjoy running the eighth mile course. You don't have as much time to think (as compared to running quarter mile) and it's
easier on the parts," added Abney.

Tonight's event was a big hit for Motorcycle winner Allen Hitt of Cartersville, GA. Hitt, who used to race at the now closed Southeastern International Dragway. Hitt enjoyed his first Atlanta Dragway win against Jimmy "Cha Cha" Heisler of Woodstock, GA. In doing so, Hitt not only won the "Wally" trophy and cap awarded to the National Dragster Challenge winner, he also received the RFC day winner's trophy as well. Scott Reynolds ('03 Suzuki - Cartersville, GA) and Paul Cavanaugh ('02 Hayabusa - Loganville, GA) won the semi-finalist portion of the purse. Heisler's wife, Eeman Heisler, added with a smile, "He let him win. He's very kind."

Nine year old Cole Wood from Jefferson, GA won today's 8-12 Jr Dragster event the moment his opponent, Dylan Hutchins (12 - Monroe, GA) left the starting line with the red light glowing (due to a too-quick -.039 reaction time). Wood kept the pedal to the metal, putting a breakout 12.82 at 50.16mph (12.90 dial) into the books. Hutchins run was otherwise nearly perfect, running 8.902 at 73.01mph (8.90 goal). Wesley Mayfield (11 - Gainesville, GA) and John Gordon (12 - Hiram, GA) earned the semi-finalist trophy for their efforts. Hutchins did pass points leader Chris Bowden today, and now Hutchins is leading the chase with 460 points to Bowden's 430.

Seventeen year old Chuck Hardy from Hiram, GA took the 13-17 year old win against 14 year old Morgan Wood of Hoschton, GA. Seeing he was ahead of Wood, Hardy trimmed some ET and speed off the run, ending with a race-winning 8.11 at 76.25mph (7.93 dial). Wood slowed much further to an 8.52 at 78.81mph (7.94 dial). Leighann Mayfield (14 - Gainesville, GA) moved
into the third spot in the points with her semi-final finish Brett Bowman (16 - Homer, GA) was the other semi-final finisher.
