KJ Battles to the 11th Starting Spot in Richmond

The final qualifying sheet for the Torco Race Fuels Nationals in Richmond shows that Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Cobalt in the 11th position based on his 6.681-second, 206.61 mph pass from Saturday morning. However, these simple statistics do not show the tremendous effort the team put forth in securing their spot in Sunday’s final eliminations field, with a last minute engine change between rounds on Saturday. In addition, they do not show the championship implications involved in his first round match-up with rival Allen Johnson, whom Kurt is looking to overtake in this final event of the first round of the NHRA playoffs.

However, just as he has in the week leading up to this crucial race, KJ has kept matters in perspective, looking simply at doing whatever is necessary to get the job done.

“We had said after the Dallas race that if we were to face either (fourth place Coughlin) Jeggie or Allen in the first round in Richmond, it could potentially work in our favor. Although we ran well enough to qualify, we’ve not been up to speed with the performance that this ACDelco Cobalt has been running of late. We had some parts breakage last night, the extent of which did not surface until this morning’s run, forcing us to quickly swap engines between rounds, after which we didn’t make it down the track in the afternoon.

“At times like these, it’s best to take a step back and see exactly where you need to be, determining what went wrong, and what we need to do to fix it. For example, I had .027 and .017 lights on my last runs, which, after struggling in the last two races, allows us to focus our efforts on getting the race car down the race track.

“There’s a lot on the line tomorrow, so we’re going to dig down deep. We have about twenty hours to get this car turned around, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it.”
