Tommy Howes of Laytonsville, MD, had been ever so close, but had never made the winner's circle in the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels Nitro Coupe Challenge at the AutoZone Super Chevy Show.

That all changed on a beautiful Sunday at South Georgia Motorsports Park as Howes took a win in the finals over veteran Mel Eaves on April 3.

Howes came into the 2005 season with a new hot rod, a classy '69 Camaro. He made good speed, setting the top mile per hour mark for the young season in Belle Rose, LA until Mel Eaves turned in a blast of 223.88 at Valdosta. In the finals, Howes ran a 6.566 at 213.57 miles per hour to best Eaves.

Eaves, who was running only the third event with his new '63 Corvette Nitro Coupe, showed blazing speed at the South Georgia race, turning in runs of 223.88 and 223.73 mph in the first two rounds. But in the finals, Eaves ran into problems and turned in a 6.86 at 166.91 mph.

In the Top Sportsman class (presented by Pro Charger), it was an all-Florida final as Mike Thompson of Naples, FL, defeated another Florida racer, David Saul of Winter Park , to claim the crown.

The enthusiastic crowd got a thrill when two jet dragsters turned in side-by-side 300 mph runs on Sunday. 22-year old Jessie Harris in the Hanna Motorsports Queen of Diamonds ran a blazing 5.269 at 301.00 to set a new track speed record. Her opponent, Paul Miller in the US-1 jet, also cracked 300 with a 5.310 at 300.00.

A great field turned out at South Georgia Motorsports Park for the Flowmaster Bracket Racing Series. Now that all GM Brand cars can race with the AutoZone Super Chevy Show, more and more racers have the opportunity to join the fun. Here are results from Sunday's eliminations:
