Nostalgia Nights Drag Fest

by Mark Adams and Marvin T. Smith

Nostalgia racers gathered at Douglas Dragway for a two day dragfest on April 13 and 14. Racers came from as far away as West Palm Beach, FL and Mooresville, NC. Ed Fargo's Southern Slingshots put on a great show with eleven front-engined dragsters. Fastest car was Dave Workman's dragster at 4.80 138 mph on the eighth mile racing surface. Dave also did eighth mile burnouts to thrill the crowd. John Ring's injected chevy dragster ran a quick 5:20 @ 130 mph. Several altereds and gassers also turned out for the event. As a special treat, track manager Tim Pafford brought in two jets to thrill the crowd. Elaine Larson's jet dragster topped 200 mph, and the Danchunks 55-57 Chevy Restoration Parts jet funny car ran a fine 214 mph.

The Saturday night Cackle Event was unfortunately rained out after the Saturday racing had concluded. Grand Marshall for the Cackle was Denny Fenstermaker, who brought along his restored Roger Gates' top fuel dragster from the 1960s. National Hot Rod Reunion announcer Marvin Noel was on hand to lend his colorful voice to the proceedings.

Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum in Tennessee sponsored two 4 FT trophies. Best Nostalgia Dragster trophy went to Dave Workman's "Auburn Weed Killer Special" 1962 blown big block chevy dragster. Best Engineered trophy went to Mark Adams' "Outlaws & Legends" big block Chevy Competition Coupe/Altered. Look for another nostalgia event this Fall.
