Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac Racing Team continued their string of strong performances during the first day of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in Commerce, GA. After opening with an impressive 6.778-second run on his first attempt, "The Professor" came back in the evening session with a stout 6.758 second, 203.52 mph pass to capture the second position entering Saturday's final two qualifying sessions.

"We made two nice, consistent runs today, runs that you can win with, so now it's a matter of fine-tuning. I'm sure we can dial a little more into this GM Performance Parts Pontiac. We were just a taste off in sixty feet, which was the only place Krisher (provisional No. 1 qualifier Ron) was quicker than we were.

"He was seven thousandths quicker there, and we were only off by a thousandth at the finish line, so we made up six thousandths somewhere along the way. We'll work on getting off the starting line a little better without jeopardizing our top end performance. We'll assess the data, and see what we can conjure up for tomorrow."
