The Corteco NSCA Drag Racing Series presented by BFGoodrich will head to Atlanta Dragway the last weekend in April for the second race on the 2005 schedule. This year the event has been named in memory of Nostalgia Super Stock pioneer Jim Wittenberg, who passed away late in 2004.
Jim and his wife Terry brought the Midwest Nostalgia Super Stock Association to the street-legal arena in 1991 when they put on an exhibition in Memphis, Tennessee. The Nostalgia Super Stock class took off from there, and Jim, Terry and their 1963 Ford Galaxie "Precious Metal" became a fixture at NMCA and NSCA events across the country. Jim will be greatly missed, and the NSCA is proud to honor his contribution to the sport of drag racing.
As race fans have come to expect whenever the NSCA comes to town, there will be a full weekend of great heads-up, quarter-mile competition on Atlanta Dragway's National Event-quality drag strip.
At this year's NSCA Southern Nationals Jim Wittenberg Memorial event, wars will be waged in 13 heads-up and index classes:
Edelbrock Pro Street
SpeedTech Pro Outlaw
Dart Machine Nostalgia Pro Street
ProFiler Top Street
ATI ProCharger Super Street
Goodyear Limited Street
Competition Engineering Hot Street
BES Real Street
BFGoodrich Drag Radial
Mr. Gasket Nostalgia Super Stock
Factory Modified
American Muscle Car
EFI
In addition, returning from last season will be the American SuperCar Challenge, a program designed to see just who has the baddest Corvettes and Vipers in the areas we visit this season.
New for 2005 is the Jeg's Stock/Super Stock Shootout, an event which is open to all IHRA and NHRA-legal cars. An offshoot of the special race held at last year's World Finals in Columbus, the Jeg's Stock/Super Stock Shootout will be run as a "combo" race where the Stock and Super Stock cars will ultimately run against each other to determine a winner.
The Atlanta Dragway Friday Night Test 'n Tune Session will be held as usual, and all local racers are welcome to join the NSCA racers out on the track. There will also be a big Bracket Race on Saturday, again with regular Atlanta Dragway entry fees and payouts applying.
Another exciting addition to the program in Atlanta will be the appearance of lovely Elaine Larsen and the MISS TA FIRE Jet Dragster. Elaine is one of the few women jet car drivers in the sport today, and she is sure to put on one heck of a fireworks show!
"We are dedicated to showing our fans that there is value in the dollars they spend to watch NSCA racing, because realistically there is no better heads-up doorslammer racing on the planet than ours," said NSCA president Tony DePillo. "There's no place else you can go to enjoy day-long head-to-head wheelstanding action than an NSCA event - period."
So don't miss it - beautiful cars, awesome action and a whole lot more – Corteco NSCA Drag Racing Series presented by BFGoodrich is the place to be the weekend of April 29-May 1 in Commerce, Georgia.
