Warren Johnson had very little time to test his new GM Performance Parts Grand Am during the POWERade Drag Racing off-season, having received the chassis at his shop in Sugar Hill, GA only a week and a half before the season-opening Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals. In fact, as the crew had not even installed the parachutes before arriving in Pomona, WJ's first full-power pass in his new car would come during Thursday's first qualifying session at Pomona Raceway.

However, it seemed to matter little, as "The Professor" opened his "School's Out" tour with an impressive 6.733-second, 192.91-mph pass, placing him in the second position following the first of four timed passes.

"Quite obviously, we're pleased with the result, especially as it was the first full pass on this race car. It's an excellent starting point, and gives us something to build on. We were a little puzzled at first by our top speed, considering we were fourth fastest to the eighth mile and dropped to sixteenth.

"However, in light of the problems they had with the clocks during the fuel session, it's obvious there was an issue during Pro Stock as well. Tomorrow, we'll take a look at the data and see if we can get this GM Performance Parts Grand Am to the top of the page. But for now, we're happy."
