MOHNTON, Penn. (October 9, 2004) – Using his second run of yesterday, a pass of 7.123 seconds, Chip Ellis, driver of the G Squared Motorsports G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell, qualified No. 4 as qualifying ended today for the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals.
In today’s final two sessions, Ellis was unable to make a pass under full power due to non-engine related problems. In Saturday’s morning session, the Americus, Ga., rider coasted to an elapsed time of 9.865 seconds, followed by a pass in which he received no time. In that second pass, he launched, made about one revolution of the tires and the bike shut down due to an ignition malfunction.
The entire G Squared Motorsports team remains confident and is looking to going four consistent rounds during eliminations according to team owners George Bryce and George Smith.
Ellis will go against No. 13 qualifier, Chip Hunter, from Lebanon, Ind., in the opening round tomorrow. Hunter qualified with a pass down the Maple Grove Raceway quarter-mile of 7.170 seconds at 185.79 mph.
