Warren Johnson completed a solid qualifying effort on Saturday at the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in Atlanta, GA, capturing the seventh starting position for Sunday's final eliminations. In two of the four sessions, Johnson's GM Performance Parts GTO recorded the lowest elapsed time among the 26 Pro Stock racers making an attempt, with his best effort of 6.734 seconds at 205.79 mph coming in the heat of the afternoon, resetting the Atlanta Dragway track top speed record in the process.

"We didn't end up the No. 1 qualifier, but taking it session by session, our GM Performance Parts GTO was actually the quickest car 50 per cent of the time. I guess we just happened to be quickest at the wrong times. We did have the one run on Friday night affected by rain, but overall, we’re pleased with our performance and this afternoon's effort was certainly a step in the right direction.

"We finally tried something that we had wanted to test for the last three or four races, but had been unable to since we entered the fourth session at the other events with a chance to improve our standing. This afternoon, however, we knew we wouldn't get bumped and the conditions would be similar to what we expect to have on race day, so we decided to see what it would do. Fortunately, it responded with a very good run, producing data we will be able to use in the future.

"Although the forecast is calling for rain tomorrow, we'll just wait and see what Mother Nature has in mind, and deal with it as best as possible."
