CLERMONT, Ind. (September 4, 2005) - Fresh from a runner-up spot at yesterday's Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, Chip Ellis, aboard one of the G Squared S&S Buell, ended qualifying in the No. 7 position for the 51st annual NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals being held this weekend at IRP - Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Even though he went to the final round of the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, a change was in store for the final two qualifying sessions and elimination.

"We put a new engine in for the final two qualifying sessions," said partner and co-owner George Smith. "The other engine got us through the Ringers Gloves Battle but was going away as we headed into the semifinal and final rounds. With the Battle behind us our concentration is now on the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals."

G Squared Motorsports debuted its second generation Buell at the start of this event. Ellis' best pass of five qualifying opportunities aboard the new motorcycle came in the first round of the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, which doubles as a qualifying session. Ellis covered the IRP quarter-mile in 7.112 seconds at 181.28 mph.Tomorrow Ellis will square off against Mike Berry in the opening round of eliminations. Berry qualified 10th with an elapsed time of 7.135 seconds. Ellis is looking to move up in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings. The Americus, Ga., driver enters this event No. 6.

CLERMONT, Ind. (September 4, 2005)- If you've wonder what has happened to the Buell that Chip Ellis vacated when he moved to his new Buell, you only have to look around the G Squared pit area. It's there.

G Squared is fielding two Buells this weekend. Matt Smith is on board.

"Matt's running the bike that Chip used to run. It’s still a good bike even though it has over 200 runs on it," said George Bryce, who along with George Smith co-owns G Squared Motorsports.

"We had at least three goals for Indy. First was to get Ken Johnson back on board. He's here and has helped a whole bunch. Second was to debut our new Buell. It's here with Chip on board. And our final goal was to become a two-bike team. That's happened too. Matt Smith joined us here at Indy on our second Buell.

"It's cool that we can give Matt a chance. We now have two opportunities to put a G Squared S&S-powered Buell in the winner’s circle."

Moving from his Suzuki, Smith adapted immediately to his new ride. Running a 7.154-second pass, he was qualified second at the end of Friday's qualify and No. 9 after Saturday. He moved back to No. 2 on Sunday morning when he ran an elapsed time of 7.090 seconds at 184.52 mph.

Based on the strength of that 7.090-second pass, Smith finished No. 2 on the final qualifying ladder for the 51st annual NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

When eliminations begin tomorrow, Smith will be match against Chris Rivas, who qualified No. 15 with a 7.201 second pass at 178.33 mph.

Smith is No. 13 in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings with 390 points entering this event.
